Chapter 2

Author: Melon Latte
Brandon stormed forward and raised his hand to slap me. I sidestepped and grabbed his wrist.

"Brandon, you really think you're tough now? You lay a finger on me today, and the consequences aren't something the Cooper family's second son can afford."

Brandon's expression shifted, something like humiliation crossing his face. "You…"

I used to love Brandon's looks and that stubborn streak of his. When we were together, I'd always go along with whatever he wanted and smooth things over. Hitting him where it hurt this directly was clearly more than he could handle.

But there was nothing he could do about it. His family's company still depended on mine for business, so he couldn't afford to burn that bridge. Brandon was so furious a vein throbbed at his temple, but all he could do was yank his hand free.

"Nicole, watch your mouth!"

I put on a look of mild surprise. "What did I say wrong? Isn't it the truth?"

A few classmates jumped in with nervous laughs to break the tension.

"Come on, why are you two fighting? It's Lacey's party. Don't do this."

"Yeah, Nicole, calm down. You've always had such a temper."

"But actually, how did Lacey suddenly have this kind of money? I know the Dixon family treats her well, but…"

But she wasn't actually family. The classmate who'd spoken seemed to realize she'd said too much and quickly shut up.

Lacey had recovered by then, and her eyes turned red at the question. "No, no, it's not the Dixons' money. After exams ended, I got a job working for Bran. The whole time I was at the Coopers' company, I was the first one in and the last one out every day.

"Bran felt sorry for me and gave me a decent salary. Everyone at school helped me so much back then. I just wanted to give a little something back."

By the end of it, tears were rolling down her cheeks, and she turned the blame straight on me. "Nicole, there's really nothing going on between Bran and me. How could you say something like that about me?"

Her heartfelt little speech had even our homeroom teacher, Max Coleman, tearing up. "You've always been the most responsible kid in the class, and now you're showing gratitude on top of it. That's really something."

The class president, Jordan Burk, chimed in right after, "Isn't that right, Mr. Coleman? Some people can have all the money in the world and still not measure up to someone who earned every penny on her own."

The tide turned instantly, and the way everyone looked at me changed.

"Isn't Nicole being kind of aggressive?"

"Just because her family's rich, she can bully people like that? Lacey earned every cent she has on her own!"

"So, being rich means you're above the rest of us? She didn't come here to celebrate. She came here to start something."

I kept my expression cold and acted like I hadn't heard any of it.

Brandon gently patted Lacey's back and shot me a cold look. "Lacey, let's go. Don't waste your time on this psycho."

The two of them didn't spare me another glance and focused on smoothing things over with the guests and the teacher. Brandon stayed by Lacey's side the entire time, pouring her drinks and taking shots on her behalf.

Whenever she dabbed at her eyes, he was right there handing her a tissue. Every gesture was natural and intimate. They were obviously a couple.

That was when Jordan piped up again, seemingly on purpose, "Brandon, you're really going all out taking drinks for our Lacey. What's the deal between you two?"

Lacey blushed and denied it immediately, "Oh, stop. Don't say things like that."

"Bran's just a nice guy helping out. There's nothing between us."

But Brandon never denied it. If anything, he stepped half a step closer to her. "I've always thought of Lacey as my closest little sister. Taking drinks for my sister is the least I can do."

None of the waitstaff had come to seat me, but I didn't care. I found an empty chair and sat down on my own. Watching Brandon's little performance, I stood right back up and clapped my hands.

"Great! What a wonderful 'sister.' Lacey, this graduation party turned out really nice! Congratulations!"

The sound drew everyone's attention. I made a show of thinking it over.

"Lacey practically grew up under the Dixon family's roof, and today, she's finally graduating. I'm happy for her. I got a little carried away earlier and caused some drama, and I'm sorry about that.

"So how about this? My treat—a car for every single person here to celebrate graduation! As long as each one stays under 100,000 dollars, I'll cover it. Consider it a graduation gift!"

The room erupted.

I immediately put on a troubled expression and turned to Lacey. "But would you mind if I charged it to your card first? I left in such a rush today that I forgot my Black card. I heard you made pretty good money working on that project with Brandon, so you could front me the cash, right?"

Lacey knew I was doing this to humiliate her on purpose. But since it was technically "my card" anyway, she only thought about it for a second before nodding.

"Of course. It's no trouble at all."

Then, I heard a deafening crash, but I didn't feel any pain. It was Brandon. His car had suddenly spun out of control. The vehicle swerved violently and slammed straight toward a concrete support column. Brandon was fighting the steering wheel inside. The tires shrieked against the pavement like a dying scream, but he was going too fast to turn."Help!"But there was nobody who could help him now.The front of the car smashed into the column, crumpling inward by half. The windshield shattered, spraying glass everywhere. The airbag deployed and engulfed Brandon's face.I stood frozen, my whole body trembling. My phone rang. My assistant, Tara Holden's, voice was frantic. "Ms. Dixon, security says there's been an accident in the parking garage. Are you all right?""Call an ambulance."I hung up and walked over slowly. Brandon was slumped in the driver's seat, the airbag already deflated. His eyes were half open, and he didn't look like he was breathing anymore.I straightene

Brandon disappeared for a while after that. I didn't go looking for him, and I didn't have anyone keeping tabs. A nobody who'd been thrown out of the Cooper family wasn't worth my attention. But there was no shortage of busybodies who, after hearing what happened between us, kept showing up to describe how pathetic Brandon's life had become. They were hoping I'd be in a good enough mood to throw them a business opportunity.I was happy to hear them out. A cheating ex reduced to this? Who wouldn't enjoy that?…One evening, I left the office and headed to the underground parking garage to get my car. The garage was dead quiet, nothing but the sound of my heels clicking against the concrete. Then, I heard a second set of footsteps behind me that weren't mine, following close. I spun around and saw a familiar figure. Brandon was standing about ten feet away.I barely recognized him. He'd gotten so thin his face had changed. He was wearing a grimy gray jacket with frayed cuffs, and h

Lacey's case went to trial quickly. When she was brought to the defendant's stand, she looked completely out of it, nothing like the school beauty queen she used to be.After the judge finished reading the charges, Lacey's lawyer actually argued that I'd given her the card willingly and that it didn't constitute theft. The sheer range of human audacity never ceased to amaze me.I stood up and countered immediately, "Your Honor, Lacey claims I gave her the card. So when exactly did I supposedly give it to her?"Lacey blurted out before anyone else could speak, "You said it yourself! You told me I could use your card whenever I wanted!""Your Honor, Lacey has been receiving financial support from the Dixon family since her freshman year of high school. Over the past few years, I felt sorry for her and occasionally let her use this card to buy basic necessities. Every time she made a purchase, I had her report it back to me."I locked eyes with Lacey and continued, "After exams, I de

I rushed back home and told the housekeeper to let me know the second anyone from the Cooper family showed up.First thing the next morning, the housekeeper told me they were here.I opened the front door. Arthur's face was a sickly yellow, Conrad's was completely blank, and two bodyguards had Brandon pinned to the ground between them. His left eye was swollen shut, his lip was split open, and his clothes were caked with dirt. He looked like he'd been dragged through a gutter.Arthur lowered his head. "Ms. Dixon, I've brought this piece of trash to you. However you want to deal with him is your call."Brandon lifted his head to glare at me, his lips trembling. "Nicole, I know I was wrong. Please, just let me off this once.""When you teamed up with six companies to destroy my family's business, did you stop to think about the consequences?""That was Lacey's idea!"I laughed. Men were all the same. One second a woman was the most precious thing in their world, and the next they

The hotel manager handed Brandon the bill. It was 683,000 dollars.Brandon's hands were shaking as he took it. He knew he didn't have that kind of money. The Cooper family gave him 200,000 dollars a month at most in spending money, and after years of spoiling Lacey, most of it was long gone. He had no way to cover 683,000 dollars."Mr. Cooper?" The manager prompted.Brandon gritted his teeth and pulled out a handful of cards, but even splitting it across all of them, he still couldn't scrape enough together. The whispering among the classmates started up, and Brandon's ears turned bright red. He bit down hard and stepped to the side to make calls. But the deadbeat friends he kept weren't worth much either. I'd already put the word out that I was coming for Brandon, and not a single one of them dared to stick their neck out for him now.His hand was trembling around his phone. He tried his mother next."Mom, I need you to transfer me a million dollars. Tell Dad! Mom, I'm serious.

"What did you say?" Lacey asked. For a second, Lacey thought she'd heard wrong. The cashier's tone was certain. "This card has been declined. The transaction can't go through."A stunned silence fell over the ballroom. Nobody had even recovered from the shock before the hotel doors swung open and two police officers walked in, heading straight for Lacey at the front desk. The lead officer flashed his badge, his voice flat and professional. "Ms. Kemp, someone has filed a report alleging that you're involved in the theft and fraudulent use of another person's financial assets. We're going to need you to come with us for questioning."Lacey went white and whipped her head toward me. "Nicole, you…"I walked right up to her and slapped her across the face."Lacey, how do you have the nerve to throw a party with my card? I have money, but I'm not stupid. You thought you could spend it behind my back and I wouldn't find out? Are you kidding me?"Lacey clutched her cheek, staring at m
