Emily's POV
“Ah! Help! It hurts!” Brenda screams as she falls down the stairs. The crowd in the lobby came from all directions as she cried out in agony for help.
I freeze at the top of the stairs on the second floor, not understanding why she had fallen. Today is my adopted sister Brenda's birthday party, and many guests comes to celebrate with her.
“Brenda!” Mum shouts from behind me. Before I can turn around, she pushes me out of her way.
I fall and twist my ankle as she rushes towards Brenda to help her to her feet. Then she turns around and fixes a death stare on me.
“Have you lost your mind?! What are you doing being violent towards your sick sister?! ”
Mum scolds me with contempt while Brenda stands beside her with an apologetic look on her face and I know she is not sorry about anything.“Are you trying to kill her so you can take her place?!” My mom doesn't trust me at all. That's where I am in this family.
“I didn't push her, mom please listen to me.”I begs.
“That's enough” a male voice rings out at that moment. It's none other than my boyfriend, fiancé-to-be, Oliver.
“Oliv...” I am about to ask him for help, but when he jerks his head up, I only see him looking at me coldly “Look what you did!”
“No, it really wasn't me...”
“If it wasn't you, did Brenda jump down there herself? Haven't you bullied Brenda openly and secretly enough since you came back home?”
I suddenly froze in the face of my boyfriend's desperation and couldn't utter a word.
Brenda is such a good actress. I didn’t even know when tears formed in her eyes, but I’m more heartbroken at what they just did to me. My mom pushed her biological daughter out of the way to run to her adopted daughter’s aid and drew a conclusion without asking questions. And my fiancé Oliver, on the other hand, is holding up Brenda in his arms and heading for the door.
Before long, I am the only one left in the room. No one cares about me.
I go back to my room and lay helplessly on my bed. Some past memories suddenly comes flooding back.
“Emily, I’m going to marry you when we grow up,” Oliver’d said, making my cheeks turn crimson.
It was then that I believed that I would marry Oliver and be his wife when I grows up.
But everything had changed thirteenyears ago when I was kidnapped on my way to school.
My memories of the incident were vague and scattered, like those of a distant nightmare I had somehow escaped. I never learned who abducted me, but I lived freely for ten years in a faraway land. Eventually, I returned to my family, regaining my true identity. I’d been back with them for three years.
One would think my presence would have brought them joy. Yet, it turned out otherwise. After a good deal of searching, they’d thought me dead. So Brenda, the daughter of Dad’s late bodyguard, had replaced me in their hearts.
They weren’t the only ones that found our relationship challenging. I wasn't able to adapt to the family either. After years of wandering in an unnurtured environment, I had grown up feral and wild, unlike Brenda. She had learned from the best, receiving an outstanding education, making her the preferred daughter, even over their own blood. And she also suffers from kidney disease, so the tenderness makes her seem even more in need of care from others.
Just then, Brenda returns. She entered my room with a bright smile.
“Looks like you weren't hurt?” I asked.
She smirks, “Yeah, Oliver checked me out and confirmed that I was only slightly bruised. He really cares about me.”
Then, she passes me an invitation to Oliver’s party for tonight.
“What’s this?”
“Olivier asked me to let you know that you have to come to the party tonight, he said there's a surprise.” she added.
I had wondered the reason my adopted sister would be inviting me to my own boyfriend’s party until she hint it was a surprise party and since then, I have been anxious.
However, I don't actually have plans to attend anything tonight because I have an interview tomorrow morning. I'm hoping to get a job through this interview so I can expedite getting out of this freaking home.
Oliver and I have been dating for three years and although he has been closed off most of the time, I give him a plus thanks to his ability to keep a good number of our dates, and this surprise might be an engagement party. I must to be there.
“Okay. I will be prepared.” I nodded.
I pick out the most expensive outfit I own in my closet; it is The Andamane Providence detailed shoulder midi dress in brown, Oliver’s favourite colour of me. It is only right that I wear it.
Next, I sit in front of my dresser to do a quick makeup before releasing my black waist-length wavy hair from the net. One glance at the mirror and I know I’m ready for this evening.
It’s 7 PM by the time I arrive at the DELUXE event centre. I had earlier checked on Brenda for the party but was told that she left the house two hours ago. It’s strange she isn’t coming to my party after passing the invite to me.
I take a deep breath in, release it two seconds later and give myself a pep talk before venturing into the building.
I show my invitation card and go through the security outside the hall before I’m allowed in.
I am surprised to see a bunch of people whom I do not recognize, in fancy clothes and expensive accessories and immediately, something feels off to me.
My priority is finding Oliver in this sea of people, so I stop a passing waiter and grab a glass of champagne from his tray.
“Excuse me, have you seen Oliver?”
As soon as I posed that question, the waiter looked past my shoulder and pointed to the distance. Immediately, I follow his outstretched arm to the stage and what my eyes see, plant my feet on the floor.
My eyes blink as my jaw drops in shock. Oliver is all smiles with Brenda’s hand hooked around his left arm. My adopted sister and my boyfriend are whispering happily to each other while I stand in the crowd watching them with a mix of confusion and shock.
Emily.“I want to kiss you. Can I?” He whispered, with clear amusement flashing across his eyes. “W-what... H-how... Do you need permission to—”I was so startled that I didn’t know how to word my question. And I hadn’t even finished the one I managed to ask when his lips crashed onto mine.I actually meant to ask him if he needed permission for things like this. He didn’t need to, given the stage of our relationship. But I had also meant to ask him why he would want to kiss me right now, right here in Tessa’s presence. But of course, he didn’t give me the chance.“C-chri...” My words were swallowed as he deepened the kiss, not giving me the chance to speak.I was completely disoriented all thanks to me worrying about Tessa catching us.She had her back to us. And only a turn of her head was all it would take for her to see.“Focus, Emily” I heard Christopher’s voice pulled me back to him. I hadn’t realized when he stopped.“How can I focus when there is someone else in t
Emily.“Chris, where would you and Emily live after the wedding?” That was the question Tessa asked Christopher the moment I handed her a cup of tea and sat down next to him.I glanced at Chris as well, showing interest in his response. His family didn’t look like the type to allow their members live in a different house when they had a mansion big and comfortable enough to house even to their fourth generation.“Grandpa wants us to live here, but I would discuss with him tomorrow. After the wedding, Emily and I will spend two weeks here before moving back to my penthouse,” Christopher explained.Tessa nodded in understanding. “Newlyweds need this moment to live by themselves without anyone’s interference.” Then she added, “Chris, if I were to be in your shoes, I wouldn’t want to spend the first two weeks of my marriage here.”“That was my plan initially, but I need to make sure I don’t give grandpa the slightest opportunity to get us to move back here permanently.” Christop
Christopher.Tessa stopped talking and dropped the ex topic altogether when she noticed how comfortable Emily was. I was quite sure Emily didn’t think it was nice to mention her ex-boyfriend in her fiancé’s presence. Also, my cousin seemed to come back to her senses. She glanced at Emily, and then at me before releasing a deep sigh.“Emily, forgive me, but your mother is a handful,” Tessa declared as a matter of fact. “And please don’t get mad at me in case I keep saying it. Because, I probably wouldn’t stop until she changed. Now, what are the odds?” “I know.” Emily agreed, hiding a smile. “She might never change, so your mouth should get prepared not to stop talking about her.”“Good!” I shook my head. I was in for a proper conversation with Emily tonight, but it seemed like my kind cousin had forgotten all about the help she promised earlier and has decided not to leave, even placing orders for a midnight snack.Or maybe I got the ‘process’ all wrong?Soon, a soft polit
Christopher.Tessa and I walked Emily to her designated bedroom.Along the corridors, Tessa mentioned spending the night with Emily so she wouldn’t feel lonely in any environment.“Chris, I know you would want to spend a little time with Emily. And on this note, bribe me,” Tessa said, looking back.“What do you want?” I asked, hiding the smile threatening to spring up from my lips.“Treat my Emily well,” she said before turning her gaze ahead.I felt that she had wasted the opportunity. Treating Emily well wasn’t even a question. It is something I have already decided to do.“How is Emily yours?” I asked, deciding to get to the bottom of it.“Because she is my best friend, even till the end.” I didn’t doubt that.We got to the room Emily would be residing in. Tessa opened the door and let us in. I shut the door and followed. My gaze took in every piece of furniture in the room. The room was very comfortable. It was one of the best guest rooms. Emily was worried when she d
Christopher.I was happy to see Emily’s parents finally leaving, especially after her mother spoke foolishly. Fortunately, Tessa was present. She took care of the situation the best way it could have been.Outside the house, in the midst of the last minute cheerful chattering, Emily’s mother discreetly called her aside. She had something to say to her.I was walking behind them hence I was able to hear her words clearly. Her tone wasn’t kind. Typical Mrs. Wilson. She didn’t give Emily a chance before to register her statement before grabbing her wrist and pulling her away.I stopped in my steps, slowly taking my hands out of my pants’ front pockets, a subtle frown probably on my face already.I was curious as to what ridiculous last minute pep-talk or instruction Emily’s mother remembered to share with her.I stood at the spot, my gaze following both women as they stopped thirty steps away from the others. Since they backed the rest of us, I couldn’t see their facial expres
Tessa.“You don’t know me.” Brenda shook her head. “You don’t know me at all. You belittle me.” I didn’t care to find out what she meant by that. I simply ignored her and watched from the corner of my eyes as she sat down on one of the couches. Finally, I crossed my leg over the other and met her heated gaze.Soon, we will know if I overhyped or belittled her.A few minutes passed and I was up on my feet again. “We are heading back into the house. It’s time for Dinner,” I announced.Brenda glared at me while standing on my feet. But she had no choice but to follow me.We were right on time for dinner. Everyone had moved to the dining table and were seated when we arrived.Emily’s mother, Mrs. Wilson as I preferred to call her because I didn’t like associating her with my best friend, grinned as soon as she saw us walk in.“Brenda, how was the tour?” she inquired, already trying to help Brenda pull out a chair beside her at the table.I didn’t care if Brenda was going to l
Tessa.I couldn’t believe that Brenda would dare try to follow after Emily and Chris without shame.Did every explanation I gave to her dumb adoptive mother who didn’t know how to read the room, escape her ears? Brenda stopped in her steps and turned to look at me before shifting her gaze to the right path and glancing back to me.“Isn’t that the way out?” She asked, pointing towards that direction.A scoff escaped my lips as I took a few steps forward closing the gap between us.‘God, please keep me sane enough to handle this lady with patience until the very end,’ I prayed silently in my head.Brenda will make you lose your calm and your years of dedicated home training within minutes.“Brenda, be careful not to get on my nerves. Unlike my best friend Emily, there is nothing on the path, stopping me from dealing with you,” I warned, trying to keep my voice down.Brenda furrowed her brows, pretending to be confused by my reaction, as if I had just flared up out of the blues
Emily.“You know, sometimes, I wonder what you saw in me,” I said to Christopher as we suddenly stood at a spot, staring into each other’s eyes. But in the end, I had to look away. I couldn’t hold his gaze for long. “What is there not to see in you? So you need me to spell them out to you?” Christopher asked me.I caught his amused gaze from the corner of my eyes and quickly shook my head. I don’t need to hear him telling me all those sugary-coated words. Even if he meant them. “You don’t need to. I think I already get them. And your stare says a lot,” I said, meeting his gaze briefly before swinging his arm, gesturing for us to continue the walk. And when I thought that he was going to lead me into the driveway properly, he lead me to take a turn by our left and it immediately, it occured to me that he might just be taking me towards the backyard. “Emily, tell me what my stare says?” Christopher probed, tilting his head to the side.A sheepish smile lightly masked my face
Emily. It is with so much relief on my heart that Christopher and I are walking right next to each other without any other human to interfere.Tessa is my best girl. She read the situation and then proceeded to an act. Mum almost ruined it though by trying to make Brenda follow us.I don’t know what she was thinking when she brought up that idea. I bet she didn’t know she looked empty in front of the Moore family for what she did.If I wasn’t so sure that Mum would never want to jeopardize her bidding relationship with the Moore family, I would have thought she was thinking of making Christopher interested in Brenda. I hope I’m not wrong.Because, I haven’t forgotten the fact that Mum was going to help Brenda marry Christopher instead after Brenda found out Christopher’s identity and cried to her that she wanted him.To think Mum had been foolish to even consider her request and even proceed to act on it.Today made me realize that there was probably nothing Mum could not do fo
