Chapter 1

Author: Sharp Tongue
The first time I clearly heard them calling me an old geezer was at our regular meeting on Monday.

Samuel had his head bowed as he listened to me lecturing him, his eyes turning red.

Someone muttered under his breath during the break, “He’s really an old geezer who loves mistreating handsome young men.”

I froze at the remark, which caused a ripple effect that grew into torrents of whispered rumors and gossip.

“He’s totally abusing his authority and venting his frustrations on the young man.”

“He’s already 32 years old and still harping on his eight-year-long relationship. How stubborn and narrow-minded of him, really.”

I put down my glass and silence immediately ensued in the meeting room.

All their gazes landed on me, as though I were the one at fault.

Samuel pressed a napkin to the corner of his eye.

“Mr. Graham, I’ll check through the data again.”

“Not check through, but re-do.”

I tried to ignore the piercing pain in my chest and said coldly.

“I want to see the accurate analysis report and remediation plan tomorrow morning before the meeting.”

My gaze swept across everyone in the meeting room, including those gossipmongers.

“The meeting is adjourned.”

I stood up and left the meeting room.

Hushed whispers surged up again like a tide.

This time, even more unbridled than it was before.

“Why is he acting all high and mighty? He only got to the position of director because of Ms. Stewart.”

“The old geezer just flew into a rage. Did his mid-life crisis come early?”

When I arrived back in my own office, I received a notification on my computer of an incoming email from the internal system.

I clicked it open, only to be greeted by a shocking title, “Suggestions for optimizing management communication approaches and caring for our employees’ mental health.”

The sender was the HR director, but I knew who was behind this.

Samuel’s tears spoke volumes more than my performance report.

Just as I closed the page with a cold snort, Wanda’s call came in.

She spoke lazily while trying to appease me, “Jansen, I heard you blew up during the meeting? That young man burst into tears from your lecture.

“Samuel is still young and inexperienced. Making mistakes is inevitable for someone at his age, do be patient with him.”

I could even hear sobs coming from the phone.

I tried to hold myself back from being emotional and said as calmly as I could, “Samuel’s basic data was sloppily done and riddled with errors. His mistakes have a direct impact on the company’s quarterly financial report.”

“Oh, it’s just work, Jansen. Mistakes are inevitable.”

She went on, trying to trivialize the matter, “Samuel’s health hasn’t been in a good condition and I think he’s been suffering from gastroenteritis. Do be a little more understanding of him.

“Shall we have dinner tonight? I’ve made a reservation with that new restaurant down the road.”

-

After work, I hopped into Wanda’s white sports car, looking slightly more appeased.

“He’s just a young lad and still insensible. Give him a little more guidance for my sake, won’t you?”

Wanda looked pleadingly at me.

I decided to let things go and not give her a hard time.

Samuel was in the private room, looking neat and tidy, accentuating his handsome good looks.

Shiloh looked straight at me and said, “Eternatus needs talents like you. Feel free to reach out if you need help in any way.”“Thank you, Ms. Griffin.”I accepted her acknowledgement and expression of approval.A few days later, after a joint project meeting with Shiloh’s department, Shiloh and I left the meeting room, discussing some details of the project in hushed tones.“Ms. Griffin, I suggest…”A figure before us suddenly cut me off mid-sentence.It was Wanda. She stood right there, glaring at me with hatred and indignation filling her eyes.Shiloh stood right in between me and Wanda.Wanda suddenly charged forward, but was stopped by some security guards.Struggling against their hold, she yelled at me at the top of her lungs a mere few steps away from me, “Jansen Graham! What must I do to make you come back to me?“Will you only stop when you see my entire family destroyed?”That was when she noticed Shiloh standing next to me, and her eyes burned with rage and jeal

The celebration banquet tonight is on me!”*What came with our celebration was the death knell for Stewart Enterprise. The day after our celebration banquet, a haggard, old figure came barging into Eternatus’ office building. It was Melissa. She charged forward, yelling with desperation, “Jansen Graham! I know you’re inside! Come on out! Come on out and talk to me if you have the guts to!”I looked through the gaps in the blinds to peek at the commotion in the hall. The receptionist called me through my line. “Mr. Graham, Ms. Jenkins, Ms. Stewart’s mom, insists on seeing you and she’s very agitated…”“Tell her that I’m in a meeting and that she should leave.”Her voice sounded through the

“Hello, Ms. Jenkins,” I said politely but the distance in my voice was clear. Her voice came through the phone, soft yet tinged with fatigue.“Jansen, it’s me. Have you knocked off work yet? Have you had dinner?”“I just knocked off. Is anything up, Ms. Jenkins?” I cut straight to the chase.Melissa fell silent, clearly not expecting me to sound so cold and distant. She sighed. “I know Wanda went overboard. I apologize to you on her behalf, but Stewart Enterprise is really on the brink of collapse…“I know it’s too much to ask this of you, but can you please help Wanda out? You’re the only one who can persuade Eternatus to show us mercy…”I thought back on the many reminders this pampered lady who lived a life of luxury gave me over the past eight years. She kept reminding me to be content and to focus on winning Wanda’s heart.“Jansen, why work so hard? Leave women to do the work and focus on career building.“A man should focus on the family instead!“Look, it’s precisel

“I’ve gotten rid of that fool Samuel Smith! As for those who mocked you with that silly nickname…I’ll spare none of them!“I promise I’ll never let you be mistreated like that again! Jansen, I really can’t do without you…”She reached out to grab my arm, but I dodged it.I stood rooted to where I was, looking at her with pity.Turns out that I was nothing more than a pawn who could help her clean up her mess. She could grovel to me when she needed me and kick me aside when she no longer needed me.“Wanda Stewart, do you still not get it?”My voice was exceptionally calm and without any trace of emotion.Hope reignited in Wanda’s eyes as she looked anxiously at me. “I didn’t leave because of Samuel or because marriage was never in the books for us.”I declared emphatically, “I left because I finally saw clearly that you, Wanda Stewart, don’t deserve the eight years of love I poured into our relationship. All the more you don’t deserve a moment longer in my future.”With that

The doors slowly closed on the hesitant look on Wanda’s face. The sudden weightlessness as the lift descended was an echo of the heavy burden weighing on my heart over the past three months. This time, I finally hit rock bottom.I never looked back. The moment I stepped through the revolving doors, my phone buzzed.I rejected the call without hesitation and blocked that number immediately.I chucked eight years of my youth and my once-burning love for her into the trash, along with the box of my belongings.I shut off all my social media apps and fell into a deep sleep at home. One morning a week later, I sat in my new condo apartment eating breakfast. My phone rang. It was a local number I was unfamiliar with.I hesitated for a moment before finally answering it.“Hello, is this Mr. Jansen Graham?” A slightly anxious voice of a middle-aged woman sounded through the phone.“Yes, I am. Who am I speaking with?”“Mr. Graham, pardon me for bothering you! I am Ms. Lloyd, Ms. St
