Chapter 2

Author: Kim Wish
I opened my book and started with the table of contents. I had a habit of reviewing the overall structure first.

Connor knew how to put on a show too. He pulled out a reference book for the Olympiads and held his chin with one hand before he began reading.

He simply read and didn't write down anything.

The students beside us couldn't stand it any longer and began mocking us.

"Reading questions from an Olympiad reference book without writing anything down? Are you treating it like a novel? That girl, too. She draws two lines on the table of contents and thinks she's finished studying? Do they think they're in an acting class? As long as they don't fool themselves, I guess."

We remained unconcerned. Anyone determined to be a show-off had to accept the judgment of mere mortals.

However, we did take our study seriously. After all, we had heard this honors class was formidable. Underestimating the competition was a show-off's greatest mistake, after all. If we slipped up, the humiliation would be unbearable!

During the second period, Ms. Dawson, who also taught math, came in with a stack of papers. "We're having a quiz."

I almost chuckled.

Our chance to prove ourselves had come so quickly.

Once the papers were handed out, I worked through mine with ease.

Halfway through the allotted time, Connor and I put down our pens almost simultaneously. We then stood up and handed in our papers.

Everyone stared at us in shock.

Ms. Dawson was surprised, too. She looked up; when she realized it was us, her surprise turned to contempt.

"What? You're turning in your papers already? Too many questions you couldn't answer? This is the standard difficulty in our honors class. If you can't handle it, move to a regular class now."

I said, "Why don't you grade them now then?"

Ms. Dawson picked up our papers, her tone contemptuous. "At your level, I can already tell how many scores you get with just one look..."

She gave the papers a few skim, then suddenly froze. Refusing to believe what she saw, she pulled out the answer key and checked our work line by line. Then, she went over both papers several times.

At last, she said in disbelief, "Perfect scores? Both of you got perfect scores?"

The entire class almost exploded in an uproar.

Ms. Dawson snapped out of it and slammed the papers onto the desk. Her voice turned cold.

"You cheated, didn't you? Tell me right now! Did you get the answers in advance? Or did you copy from each other?"

I smiled and pointed at the long-form structured questions. "Look carefully, Ms. Dawson. Our solutions aren't the same with each other and the answer key. How could we have copied from somewhere else?"

Ms. Dawson checked repeatedly, her expression changed from flush to pale.

Suddenly, she realized something.

"Was this quiz too easy?"

She called on the two top students in the class and several other students who were good at math.

"Those of you who are finished, hand in your papers."

I followed her eyes and I saw the legendary Genius Gemini, one boy and one girl. They took their papers past us, eyeing us as if we were garbage. My curiosity about these supposedly formidable opponents vanished.

Connor and I loved to show off, but we only pushed ourselves. We never looked down on anyone else.

Ms. Dawson graded their papers quickly, then stayed silent.

The Genius Gemini asked confidently, "Ms. Dawson, what did we get?"

Ms. Dawson's expression was strange. After hesitating, she looked at the boy who was ranked top. "Owen Cross, 95 points."

Then she looked at the girl who was ranked second. "Tessa Moore, 91 points."

As for the others, none of them scored above 93 points.

The other top students' faces turned red.

Tessa recovered first and smiled. "This test was unusually difficult. The last two problems covered material beyond the syllabus that we haven't learned yet..."

Owen immediately added, "Right. Your old school must have moved faster, so you learned it in advance."

I let out a sound of surprise intentionally. "But didn't Ms. Dawson just said the quiz was too easy?"

Connor supported me immediately. "So was it too difficult or too easy? Maybe you should agree on an answer first."

Owen's face darkened, and Tessa bit her lip without saying anything.

Ms. Dawson reviewed every question from beginning to end.

As if she had found an opening, she flung the papers aside and scoffed.

"This test was difficult, but I've taught math for years. With questions this hard, there's no way you could turn in your papers that early and still score perfectly! If you're going to cheat, at least use your brains and make your story believable!"

She continued coldly.

"Cheating is bad enough. You've got a serious character problem if you can't own up to it. Poor grades can be improved, but poor character will make you a disgrace to society!"

Several students immediately joined in.

"No wonder they transferred! Maybe they were caught cheating at their old school."

"They probably stole the answers. Disgusting."

I met Ms. Dawson's eyes without backing down. "If you're accusing us of cheating, you'll need evidence. We can solve new problems right here. If we fail, we'll leave the school immediately."

Connor added. "Yes, that's acceptable. But if we solve them, what will you do, Ms. Dawson?"

The national competition was livestreamed across the country on the day itself as admissions officers from dozens of top universities were watching online. Before the competition began, Owen and Tessa spoke confidently into the camera."Ability speaks for itself in a competition. I hope certain people who only know how to take shortcuts will learn their place. Our goal is to finish in the top three!"Bullet comments flooded the livestream.[It's Owen and Tessa! They finished in the top ten last year! They'll definitely be even stronger this year!][Wow, they're top students from an elite high school! They carry themselves so differently!]When Connor and I entered, the camera swung toward us.The livestream exploded, and the comments went wild.[What the hell?! Why are they here?!][AHHHHHHHHHH! It's Anita Rivers and Connor Thompson! The joint champions from two competitions ago!][Excuse me, but who are they?][You must be new. Two competitions ago, these two destroyed the

After we spoke our mind, the principal's already furious expression darkened further. He slammed his hand onto the desk and said, "Don't worry. I'll clear your names!"He picked up the phone and called the academic office directly. "Issue an announcement confirming Anita and Connor's results. Let every teacher and student see what real geniuses look like!"The person on the other end was so frightened that their voice went shrill. "Yes, of course, Mr. Smith!"After hanging up, the principal connected to the schoolwide broadcast system. His stern, clear voice echoed through every corner of the school. "Attention, all teachers and students. I will now announce the guaranteed admission decision for this schoolwide exam."Anita Rivers and Connor Thompson led the rest of the grade by a wide margin. They were breaking the highest score in school history... Therefore, this year's two guaranteed admission spots will go to Anita and Connor. Please join me in congratulating them!"Every

I looked at Connor. He raised his eyebrow as Mr. Ward announced he was going to take us to see the principal. The same eagerness shone in our eyes."Sure," I said readily. "Let's go. We wanted to see the principal, anyway."The principal's office?Perfect. The principal himself had recruited us back then.As soon as we reached the principal's office, Mr. Ward immediately started his accusations. "Mr. Smith, you have to stand up for the honors class!"He exaggerated everything, portraying us as two corrupt troublemakers who had used family connections to get in, lazed around all day, and cheated to disrupt school order.Ms. Dawson chimed in as well. "Students like them are a disease in our school. They've damaged the learning environment in the honors class. I strongly recommend expelling them immediately as a warning to others!"Owen and Tessa put on wounded expressions and looked pitifully at the principal. Connor and I said nothing. We watched their performance as if it we

The faces of Ms. Dawson and Mr. Ward darkened instantly when they heard what the invigilator had to say about us.I turned to Connor and said, "See? At least one teacher isn't blind."Connor smirked. "The truly blind ones still haven't opened their eyes."Owen gritted his teeth and made one last attempt. "That proves nothing. At most, it shows they didn't cheat inside the exam room. I demand to see their original papers!"As if he had found another opening, Mr. Ward immediately ordered the technical staff to display our scanned answer sheets. When our two nearly perfect papers appeared on the screen, everyone was stunned."This solution to the final structured question... Can you solve it that way? That's brilliant!""The diction and sentence structure in this English essay are worthy of a model answer!"Mr. Ward stared at the papers, his lips trembling. He finally realized that it wasn't the limit of our ability. It was merely the highest score the exam permitted.Still unwil

"Anita and Connor? There must be something wrong with the results. How is it possible that you two come in first? You cheated again, didn't you?!"An accusation from a teacher carried far more weight than Owen and Tessa's suspicions. Once she branded us cheaters, every eye turned our way. There was suspicion, contempt...I couldn't even be bothered to raise my eyes.Connor kept his arms folded, but his gaze turned cold. "Ms. Dawson, you better have evidence with that. The entire schoolwide exam was recorded with security cameras, and invigilators were in the room. Which do you doubt, the witnesses or the footage?"Ms. Dawson choked on her anger and was about to lash out when her backup arrived. Mr. Ward had rushed over after hearing the news. When he saw the two outrageous scores, his brows knitted together. It was clear that he found them absurd. He silenced the commotion with a stern shout. "Quiet! There are legitimate questions about these results."He glanced at us, his ey

The area around the board where the ranks were posted was immediately filled with voices and sounds of discussion from the students."What the hell? Is it really possible?!""Anita Rivers? Connor Thompson? Who are they? I've never heard of them!""Weren't Owen and Tessa always first and second? Where are they?""Look lower! My God, Owen is third and Tessa is fourth!"The classmates who had just been praising the Genius Gemini fell silent. They looked from the ranking board to Owen and Tessa's pale faces. Both looked as if they wanted to speak but could not.I could feel a surge of delight erupted from my heart.Yes!This was incredible! As a show-off, was this not the moment I had lived for?!Connor smiled too. He was clearly enjoying this as much as I was.But this was still not enough. This was only the beginning!I deliberately pulled Connor through the crowd to the front of the ranking board and frowned."What's this? I tried with you again, Connor. Do you have to pus
