Chapter 12

Author: Anonymous
After returning home, Diane tore through every corner of the house once more.

The butler, Cameron, handed her a mechanical part he had found on the lawn—the very piece that had slipped out unnoticed when Ian shoved me down the stairs that day.

Back then, Diane had seen it but paid no attention.

Now, holding it again, she clenched her fist so tightly the shard nearly cut into her delicate palm.

She tossed the part onto the growing pile of "my" broken components, then froze.

Her gaze snagged on a tiny chip.

The moment she picked it up, her thoughts stalled. Before she could dwell on it, a servant rushed in, breathless with urgency.

"Well? What did you find?" she demanded.

"Madam Bouchard… perhaps you should come to the basement yourself."

Suspicion furrowed her brow. She had lived here for years and, of course, knew the villa had a basement. But she had always found it damp and gloomy, a place she disliked and rarely entered.

Still, she rose and followed the servant downstairs.

Diane locked herself in the basement for days, refusing food and water.Whenever she woke, she clutched "my" broken machine parts to her chest and played my memories on the computer again and again. When exhaustion overwhelmed her, she would collapse there, dozing fitfully, still calling my name even in her dreams.Ian came looking for her."Diane, what's wrong with you? If you keep this up, you'll ruin your health.""Ruin… my health?" She repeated in a daze, then murmured to herself, half-mad, "Yes… Gaston's health was ruined because of me…"The sight of Ian's face snapped her into sudden clarity. Something flickered in her eyes—sharp, lethal—like a blade unsheathed.Startled, Ian faltered. "Diane?""It's you. It's all your fault. If you didn't exist, Gaston and I wouldn't have ended up like this. The one who should've died is you!"Her words made him realize she had uncovered the truth. He smiled cruelly. "How can you blame me? Wasn't this your choice all along? Gaston is d

Diane's eyes burned red, and her voice trembled, "Gaston? No… you're not Gaston… But if you're not him, where is the real Gaston?""I" had fallen into a program malfunction, unable to answer her question.Ian stepped in. "Diane, calm down and think. Why would Gaston leave an imposter by your side? Because he's afraid you'll find out the truth. Only someone guilty hides things."He leaned closer, pressing the blade of his words. "Face it, Diane. Gaston doesn't want you anymore. And here you are, crying your heart out for him."At last, Diane seemed to digest the unbearable truth. Her world crumbled around her, as if the sky itself had collapsed. Her voice rasped with bitterness. "Ian, do you think he finds this funny? Watching me spin in circles, fooled again and again… he must be so proud of himself, isn't he?"I was already long dead—dead beyond saving. What was there to be proud of?Diane wiped her tears away with the back of her hand. When she lifted her gaze again, her eyes

"And that person is known only by the codename G," the guy said.Of course, Diane had heard of the legendary "G," a national-level figure shrouded in secrecy. She had spent an astronomical sum trying to reach him, sending people again and again, but her efforts were always in vain.Naturally, she could never find him. Because G was already dead. G was me.Diane brought the broken version of "me" back home, along with the pile of shattered components collected from the crash site. When Ian heard the news, he looked utterly dumbfounded."How in the world did Gaston get his hands on one of G's creations? Even with unlimited money, it's not something you can just buy!"Diane lowered her eyes and said nothing.Ian pressed on. "Diane, this is something huge, and he actually kept it from you…"Her gaze flickered at last, the first sign of reaction."What are you trying to say?""Have you ever thought about it? Gaston betrayed you long ago." Ian jabbed a finger at "me." "This isn't a

Ian was at it again, whispering poison into Diane's ear. This time he didn't even bother with pretense, his hostility toward me laid bare."As long as you file for divorce, you won't have to keep feeding this useless waste. Why keep suffering like this, Diane? I heard you two signed a prenuptial agreement. Even if you split, you won't have to worry about him taking half your money…"And just like that, right in front of me, they began calmly discussing the terms of her divorce. At last, as if suddenly remembering I existed, Diane turned her head toward me."Gaston, I want a divorce. Do you agree?"I submitted another request to the system, asking it to modify the robot's programming so that it would say yes.Diane and Ian had grown up together. They were childhood sweethearts bound by years of familiarity. I was nothing more than an intruder, a late arrival who had forced himself into their world. That it had come to this end—well, I had no one to blame but myself. So I chose t

  • My Robot Replaced Me After Death   Chapter 8

Three years ago, after sending Ian off at the airport, Diane came home and hid herself away, weeping in silence for a long time.It was only then, belatedly, that she realized her feelings for Ian had long surpassed the bounds of friendship. But it was too late. She was already married to me."Gaston, Gaston, where are you?"Wiping away her tears, Diane searched the house for me. She didn't know that while she had been kissing Ian goodbye at the airport, I had already died alone at home. What stood before her now was only a substitute."Diane, I'm here."She threw herself into "my" arms, her voice thick with a choked sob. "If… just if… one day I had to leave you, what would you do?""I would die."Diane pressed her lips together and lifted her gaze."Stop talking about death. You know both my parents died from genetic illness. I hate hearing anyone mention death in front of me. Why do you keep using it to threaten me?""It's not a threat. It's the truth.""Enough, Gaston!"
