"No."

With a cold laugh, I pushed hard on the pedals and left Susan Edelman and Benny Reid far behind.

The cold wind hitting my face cleared my head. If it weren't for that warning in my ear just now, I probably would have switched with Susan for the sake of our two years as roommates.

Gripping the handlebars tight, I suddenly remembered the last thing the voice in my earbuds had said.

"Your boyfriend and your roommate have been sleeping together for a while now. She's not only pregnant with his baby, she also wrecked the campus kingpin's bike.

"That's why your boyfriend came up with this dirty trick. Seriously, how low can he go?"

Susan shouted from behind me, her voice anxious, "Jeannine, can you not be so selfish? I really can't pedal anymore! Just switch with me for a bit."

I couldn't be bothered with her.

Earlier, I'd made a point of glancing at her bike. Its brand logo was wrapped in several layers of colorful waterproof tape. No wonder I'd mistaken it for an ordinary secondhand bike.

Now that I took a closer look, I knew that hidden skull reflector on the handlebars and the custom carbon fiber weave under the saddle all too well.

What else could it be but the pride and joy of my wretched brother, Nick Chandler, the campus kingpin?

I snorted. 'Susan, you just picked a fight with a brick wall.'

Forget Sableton City. There was only one bike like this in the entire world.

Susan was a financial-aid student who had to pinch pennies even on the dining hall's discount specials. Where would she get her hands on a secondhand bike that nice?

Looking back, her excuse for switching bikes had been full of holes.

I pedaled faster, wanting nothing more than to shake them off. Sure, the bike was my brother's, but I had no intention of being anyone's scapegoat.

They didn't give up, though.

I'd barely made it thirty feet when a dark shape shot out and forced me to a stop at the edge of the narrow mountain road.

Luckily, I wasn't going fast. I clamped down on the brakes and planted my right foot on the ground. Otherwise, I would have gone over the edge, bike and all.

To my right was a deep, overgrown ravine.

In that single instant, my shirt was soaked through with sweat, and a chill ran down my spine. I'd come within inches of dying.

"Benny, are you out of your mind?!" I yelled.

"Jeannine, your little tantrums are one thing, but how can you be so cold and selfish today?! Don't you know this is a group activity? Don't you have any sense of the bigger picture?"

I never imagined Benny would completely ignore my panic and fear, all for the sake of a bike swap. The man I'd been with for two years suddenly looked like a total stranger.

"I'm cold? She's the one pestering me to switch, and because I won't, I'm selfish?"

That only fired Benny up even more. "Jeannine, how can you have so little regard for the group?

"Susan isn't very strong to begin with. She's already pushing herself as hard as she can so she won't hold everyone back. Can't you show a classmate a little consideration?

"Besides, if you won't switch, the whole team is going to fall behind. Can you take responsibility for dragging down the entire team all by yourself?!"

I was so furious I laughed. "You're blaming me? She's the one who ran out of steam and slowed down. Why is that on me?

"Besides, we were in the middle of the pack. There are plenty of riders behind us, and the captain's back there too. What's the rush?"

Seeing that strong-arming me wasn't working, Benny softened his tone, "Jeannine, I'm not blaming you. But you know Susan's in a special situation right now."

His eyes darted away as he said it.

"Just switch with her so we can hurry and catch up with the group, okay?"

A special situation.

I'd nearly died just now.

I stared hard at the man in front of me.

For two years, he'd been the model boyfriend. Whenever I had my period, he waited outside my dorm every single day for a week just to bring me a cup of hot cocoa. For my birthday, he lived on simple bread for a whole month just to surprise me with a gift.

He'd said I was the only one he would ever love, and that he'd do anything for me.

But today, it was like I was looking at someone else entirely.

Swallowing my rage, I said, "Benny, why don't you switch with her yourself? Besides, everyone on the team has a bike. Why does it have to be me?"

I put my hands on my hips and gave him one last warning, "Listen carefully, because I'm only saying this once. I. Am. Not. Switching!"

The words had barely left my mouth when a sharp crack rang out by my ear.

The slap caught me completely off guard. The left side of my face swelled up instantly.

I stared at Benny in disbelief. He'd actually hit me.

I'd never been treated like this in my entire life. Even the campus kingpin, whose name made everyone go pale, wouldn't dare lay a finger on me.

"Benny, you..."

Just then, the clatter of wheels drew closer as the rest of the team caught up.

The case of the fake low-income students who scammed grant money had stunned all of Sableton City, and it sent shockwaves through the education world. The university's leadership struck swiftly and cleaned house of everyone involved. Several academic advisors who'd covered for the pair were fired outright. Not only was every cent of the embezzled grant money recovered, but the Chandler Group also set up a dedicated assistance fund and paid double back to the low-income students who truly needed it.As for the biking team members who'd sided with the villains and guilt-tripped me so disgustingly that day on the mountain road, I didn't go easy on them either. The Chandler Group's legal department moved fast, serving everyone who'd ganged up on me with lawsuits for defamation and harassment. The once high-and-mighty captain was so scared he couldn't eat or sleep. In the end, he cracked under the pressure from all sides and withdrew from school. The rest of them received public repri

One month later, at Sableton Court, I sat at the plaintiff's table, calmly looking over at the defendants. That single month seemed to have drained every bit of life out of Susan and Benny.Haggard and gaunt at the defense table, Susan looked like something that had crawled out of hell.I'd heard that in the detention center, she'd tried to shift the blame and ended up in a vicious fight with Benny. During the scuffle, she'd miscarried. Her body never properly recovered, and she looked more than ten years older.Benny had lost a lot of hair. His eyes were sunken, and his cheekbones jutted out sharply. Nothing remained of the arrogant, polished student council member he used to be.Standing side by side, they looked like a pair of walking corpses.Throughout the trial, their public defender was drenched in sweat. He tried to argue for leniency on the grounds that they were immature students who had acted impulsively in the heat of a romantic dispute. But in the face of such overw

Looking down at Susan groveling on the ground like an insect, I felt nothing.Whatever bond two years as roommates had built died the moment she schemed against my life.My smile faded, and I bent down slightly toward her. In a voice only the two of us could hear, I said coldly, "Do you really think I'm coming after you today just because of some lousy bike?"Susan went rigid and looked up in terror, her eyes full of disbelief.I straightened up and held out my hand to Nick.Without needing to be told, he handed me a thick manila envelope.I opened it and pulled out a stack of statements and transaction records dozens of pages thick.I hurled the papers hard into Susan's and Benny's faces. They scattered like snowflakes, each one crowded with alarming red official stamps.Raising my voice, I exposed their darkest secret in front of everyone."Susan, Benny, you two really cashed in on your positions as student council members, didn't you?"Over the past six months, you forged

The moment that astronomical figure of 500,000 dollars came out, Benny's mask crumbled completely. Every trace of his usual refined, gentlemanly act vanished. That kind of money would ruin his entire family. There was no way he could take it on!Not only did he flat-out deny the baby was his, but he raised his hand and slapped Susan hard across the face in front of everyone. The crack of it rang out.The blow snapped Susan's head to the side and split the corner of her mouth."Bullshit! Who knows which guy put that bastard in your belly!"Spit flying, his face twisted, Benny went on, "You shameless slut! You stole a bike and caused this whole mess, and now you think you can use some bastard kid to extort me? Let me tell you, I'll never claim it!"Susan clutched her red, swollen cheek, a flash of pure madness in her eyes.As a rabid dog backed into a dead end, she lunged and tackled Benny to the ground. The two of them grappled on the dusty mountain road. Susan's long, sharp na

I limped over to the wrecked carbon fiber bike, every eye locked on my movements.I crouched and felt along the underside of the severed handlebars. With everyone watching, I pried open a latch hidden on the inside and pulled out an HD cycling action camera no bigger than a fingernail. This was one of Nick's habits. The bike had cost a fortune, so he'd had a hidden recorder custom-fitted, just in case something happened. One of Nick's men immediately handed me a tablet.I deftly pulled out the memory card, slotted it into the tablet, and cast the footage straight to the dashboard screen of a G-Wagon the bodyguards had driven up. Then I cranked the volume all the way up.The picture was crystal clear, and the audio was flawless. The first clip showed the dim mountain road the night before.Susan, in her cheap athletic wear, straddled the luxury bike and snapped selfie after selfie. When she tried to show off with a wheelie, she went down hard, bike and all.A sharp crack came th

Nick glanced at me and froze for a second. Then he spun around and grabbed a fistful of Susan's hair. Her scalp stinging, Susan let out a bloodcurdling shriek.Benny went pale and moved to pull them apart. But he'd barely taken half a step before several of Nick's black-clad bodyguards shoved him aside. He landed hard in the mud several yards away with a mouthful of dirt.Tears streaming from the pain, Susan still refused to give up and pointed at me. "Nick, it really was that bitch Jeannine who wrecked your bike!"She looks like such a hick. How could she ever pay for a million-dollar bike? Make her pay! Don't let her off the hook!"Benny scrambled to his feet and chimed in, "Nick, you've got it wrong. It really was Jeannine..."I looked at their twisted faces and sighed helplessly."Big brother," I called softly. Those two words landed like a bolt from the blue, and the entire crowd went dead silent. At the sound of my voice, Nick jolted and immediately flung Susan away.
