RAINORA.
I stepped into the apartment in a daze, my thoughts all jumbled. My hands shook as I locked the door behind me. Eunice’s cheerful voice floated from the living room. She was sitting on the couch, a jade roller gliding over her cheek as she chatted animatedly on her phone. She waved, her face lighting up when she saw me—until she took in my expression. “Hey, I’ll call you back,” Eunice murmured, her tone suddenly serious. She ended the call and set her phone down, studying me. “What happened? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.” I hesitated, then moved to sit on the couch. I took a deep breath. “I’m quitting my job at Conway Law.” Eunice blinked, clearly caught off guard. “What? Why?” “I got a new job,” I said quietly. “I’m going to be a personal assistant at Woods Enterprises.” Eunice stiffened, her jade roller freezing mid-motion. Her lips parted, but she didn’t say anything right away. After a beat, she managed, “Woods Enterprises? As in... Nikolas Woods?” I nodded, my eyes trained on the floor. “Yes. He offered me the position tonight. The pay is... it’s incredible, Eunice. It’s more than I could have ever hoped for. And there’s a new apartment, too.” Eunice placed the roller down slowly, her expression hard to read. “You’re going to work for him?” I glanced up at her, surprised by the edge in her voice. “Yes. I accepted because it’s going to help me and my family. Arin will finally get the treatment he needs.” Eunice opened her mouth as if to say something, then seemed to think better of it. She pressed her lips into a thin line and nodded curtly. “Okay,” she said, though her tone suggested she didn’t mean it. I offered a small, nervous smile. “Thank you, by the way. For helping me get here and letting me stay with you. I couldn’t have done this without you.” Her features softened slightly. “You know you’re welcome, Rain. I just—” She paused, frowning. “Are you in trouble?” The question hit me like a cold wind, and I froze for a moment too long before shaking my head. “No. I’m not in trouble.” Eunice studied me intently, her brows knitted. “You can tell me, you know. If something’s wrong.” “I know,” I said, managing a reassuring smile. “But I’m fine. Really. It’s just... a big change.” I stood, my voice light. “Goodnight, Eunice.” Eunice leaned back into the couch, clearly unconvinced. “Goodnight,” she murmured, her voice skeptical. I escaped to my room, closing the door behind me and leaning against it. I sighed, letting the tension seep from my shoulders. Kicking off my shoes, I began peeling off my clothes and preparing for bed. Once in my pajamas, I grabbed my phone and dialed Mom’s number. The screen lit up with a video call, and a few seconds later, her face appeared, warm and familiar. “Rain, sweetheart!” Mom greeted. “How are you?” My lips trembled into a smile. “Hi, Mom. I’m good. How are you and Arin?” Her eyes sparkled, her smile radiant. “Oh, Rain, I was going to call you! We got a call earlier—Arin’s been added to a premium treatment list. His first appointment is tomorrow!” My eyes widened, my throat tightening with emotion. “What?” “They said it’s all covered,” she continued, her voice trembling with joy. “Rain, I don’t know how this happened, but... it’s a miracle.” I blinked rapidly, trying to hold back tears. “It’s not a miracle,” I whispered. “I... I got a new job. A better one. And it came with benefits.” Mom’s smile faltered slightly. “A new job? So soon? What kind of job is this?” “I’m a personal assistant now,” I said, keeping my voice light. “For someone high up in the business world. It’s nothing crazy, Mom, but it’s enough to make things better for all of us.” Mom’s expression softened. “Oh, Rain, I’m so proud of you. You’re always taking care of us.” I swallowed the lump in my throat. “I just want Arin to have the best shot, you know? And now he can.” The camera shifted slightly, and Arin’s face popped into view, his fingers still flying over the keyboard of his laptop. “Did you get me a new laptop yet?” I laughed, wiping my eyes. “I’ll get you one soon, I promise. A better one than that ancient thing you’re using now.” We talked for a little while longer, our conversation easing some of the weight pressing on my chest. When we finally ended the call, I lay back in bed, staring at the ceiling. Curiosity gnawed at me, and before I could stop myself, I opened my phone and typed “Nikolas Woods” into the search bar. The results were endless—articles praising his tech empire, photos of him at galas and award ceremonies, and countless pieces touting his status as one of the most eligible bachelors in the world. One headline caught my eye: “Nikolas Woods: Ruthless Visionary or Cunning Tyrant?” I clicked on it, skimming through the text, which detailed his sharp business acumen and the many enemies he’d made in his rise to the top. I shook my head, dropping my phone onto the nightstand. “What did I get myself into?” I muttered under my breath. The device buzzed just as I was about to turn off the lamp. A text lit up the screen. Unknown Number: 9 am, Adderman. My stomach fell. Frowning, I typed back: Who is this? The response came quickly. Unknown Number: You know damn well who it is. Go to bed. My mouth fell open, both irritated and unnerved. I scoffed, tossing the phone onto the bed. “What a control freak,” I muttered. Despite my frustration, images of cold, calculating gray eyes and a dangerous smirk filled my mind. I sighed, turning to my side. It was a long while before I finally drifted to sleep.Irene POVWhen I got home later in the evening, I met the butler at the mansion's doorway. He had a respectable smile and slightly bowed to me.“Welcome back, Mrs. Wood,” He said in a calm tone. I huffed as I walked past him. “ What’s good about this evening, Walter?” I snarled at him. The sky was pitch black as no stars were visible that night. The air became thicker as I climbed up the stairs. One of the domestic staff dressed in a white and black uniform stood at the entrance of my door with a well-polished silver tray and a glass of orange juice. She nervously averted my gaze as her hands slowly trembled while holding it.I gestured for her to return it to the kitchen as I slammed my huge bedroom doors behind me. I could sense a headache coming up as I sat on the sofa close to my bed. I gently massaged my temples with my fingers as I slumped on the sofa. Not long after I sat down, I heard a gentle tap on my door. Before I could respond, the doors swung open, revealing Celeste in
Irene POVI heard a loud thud at the door. It startled me briefly. However, I snapped out my daze, seconds later I heard footsteps thumping angrily approaching the hallway. It felt like a huge elephant passing through. My bedroom door was slightly open as I looked in that direction with anticipation. Moments later, I saw the figure of Caleb walking past my room huffing. Surprisingly, he didn't stop to greet me, which was very unusual. No matter how late he got home, he always greeted me before proceeding to his room.“Caleb, is that you?” I called out. I listened keenly as his footsteps receded. He knocked on my door gently as he entered.“Good evening Mother-” he greeted in a calm voice. I nodded in approval as he sat down on a chair close to my large-size bed.“My apologies…I was deep in thoughts.” He said in a gentle tone. A wave of joy washed over me.“For a moment, I thought you forgot about me.” I said in a sarcastic voice. His eyes widened in shock.“Of course not Mother, that
Rainora POVWe arrived at my apartment building forty-five minutes later. The ride was quiet and awkward as no one would give in. Nikolas casually glanced at me while driving, letting out a ‘hmph’ sound. I pressed my lips in protest and feigned ignorance of his exasperation.“Goodnight, Mr.Woods-” I snapped quickly at him and stepped out of his car. He had a cold glint in his eyes as he watched my retreating figure.I clenched my bag angrily as I approached the ground floor of my building. I forced a smile as I greeted the doorman and headed into the lift. Just as I pressed the button to the floor leading to my house, a masculine fist stopped the motion of the sliding doors midway. I looked up to see Nikolas grinning as he also stepped into the elevator. My heart beat raced quickly as he stood right in front of me, his piercing gaze ran through my body as the elevator closed. Like he could see my soul. I wiped the sweat beading on my forehead as he continued to stare at me with a smu
Rainora Nikolas’ eyes darkened as he gazed at me and Caleb returning to the office. I felt a lump in my throat. A feeling of guilt washed over me. Instinctively, I stylishly moved inches away from Caleb. The aura in the room thickened as it tensed up. Low-tone whispers were hurling around the lobby. Everyone watched in anticipation, like watching a scene out of a movie. Sensing the weird atmosphere, Caleb cleared his throat to ease tension. “Cough..Fancy seeing you here, brother.” Caleb forced a smile on his face. Nikolas remained unfazed. “I was just about to ask you the same question, little brother.” Nikolas has a smirk on his face. Caleb clenched his fist. He quirked his lips in an attempt to utter something, but at the last minute changed his mind. Moments later, he took a deep sigh and replied. “ I had a private discussion with Aurora about some sensitive issues.” Caleb had a smug look on his face, I sensed he was trying to taunt Nikolas, which was working. Nikolas’s demeano
Caleb“Let me tell you how to go about it-” Celeste leaned towards me covertly and whispered some words in my ear. I gasped at the ingenuity of her plan. However, a wave of optimism washed over me as the likelihood that this plan could work seemed very high.“I know I can make her fall in love with me,” I mumbled to myself in vigor. I had a grin on my face. Celeste had a mischievous smile on her face as she met her gaze.I waited several days for the tension to quiet down. I dressed up in a navy-blue tailored suit. It accentuated my broad frame perfectly. I quickly put on my gold-plated watch and leather shoes on the way to the office. This time, I arrived a few hours after the workers had commenced their daily duties. I aimed to avoid any further attention that would alert Rainora.I entered the office discreetly and signaled the receptionists not to inform her of my arrival. It was easy to confirm my details with the security personnel as I was among the executive members of the boa
Caleb “Let go of her…” A familiar yet domineering tone snapped. It had the baritone of an angry lion. The sudden command of that voice took me aback. I turned to confront the source of the voice, and it turned out to be none other than Nikolas. He shot a dark glare in my direction, which left me shuddering. But I regained my thoughts and met his gaze. “What are you doing here so early, Nikolas?” I had a cheeky smile on my face as I replied. His eyes darkened at my response. His eyes focused on my grip on Rainora’s hands. I tried to tighten my grip to antagonize him, but suddenly, Rainora managed to free herself due to my distraction. Before I could make any movement, she rushed off to the building. I had a smirk on my face as I watched her retreating figure. The audience watching the entire scenes eventually dissipated while whispering, making their conversations inaudible. “I came for an early morning meeting, but it appears I got here just in time-” Nikolas curved his lip
CalebI balanced on my soft bed mattress, glancing through the latest edition of a trending female magazine. It featured full coverage of women in various tasteful attire and casual wear. They looked stunning in their various poses and stances. It also featured various articles on how to enhance intimacy between couples and other relationship goals. This always made me chuckle. I read the magazine to while away time when I was abrupted by loud yelling and cacophony. I hissed as I dropped the magazine and headed out to the source of that squabble this early morning.I followed this noise to the dining hall, where I saw my elder brother, Nikolas, storming out with dark gazes. I had a puzzled look as I scanned across the room. Mother Irene’s face turned red in anger, she kept venting out her recent disagreements with him to Celeste, my younger sister. Celeste had a mischievous smile as she met my gaze. I surmounted that whatever happened between Irene and Nikolas, she was smack in the m
NikolasThe morning rays gently tapped my skin as I slowly opened my eyes. I woke up to the gorgeous view of Rainora sleeping in such harmony. Her occasional snoring made me chuckle quietly. I tried to slip my hand away from her grip, but she held back instinctively. I heaved a sigh as I resorted to keeping an eye on her until she woke up.Finally, she woke up with a bright smile on her face. Her eyes widened as she snapped back to reality. Her cheeks turned red and blushed. She bit her lips as she glanced at me.“Good morning, Nikolas.” She said calmly. She raised her duvet to cover her lips slightly. I grinned at her shyness. “Good morning, dear. Hope you slept well?” I asked in a sincere tone. She nodded in agreement, and her demeanor slowly changed as she probably remembered the events of the night before. My heart started pacing as I felt the urge to help her forget all her sorrows. I forced a smile on my face as I held her hand firmly.“You snore in your sleep,” I said mockingl
Rainora POVI squinted my eyes and recognized the smug on Catherine’s face. She wiped the sweat dropping from her forehead as she adjusted the camera on the tripod. She had a malicious grin on her face as she shouted instructions.“Move closer to get the perfect angle.” She gestured her hands to move towards her. I tried to feebly spring away but the burly man’s strength was over whelming. He twisted his smile slightly. “I like it when you resist.” He aggressively pinned me down to the mattresss.“Why are you doing this Catherine?” I pouted. She had a vengeful look as she gazed at me.“This video should be enough to dissuade Nikolas from your spell.” She pressed the play button on the camera.Just as he tried to remove my coat. A loud thud stormed through the door. A dominating figure stood tall at the entrance. His dark gaze shuddered the burly man, he had a murderous glint in his eyes as he met my gaze.“Nikolas-” I called out. He clenched his fists in anger till blood came out. He
