Chapter 3

Author: Mint Black
A dull ache in my abdomen jolted me fully awake. I quietly slipped out of his embrace, careful not to show my discomfort. "You forgot. I can't stand strong smells."

He reeked of the perfume Carly always wore. I hated it.

Simon's smile froze awkwardly. He quickly shrugged off his jacket. "One of the business partners brought a date to our dinner. Her perfume must've accidentally rubbed off on me. I'll change right now."

I let out a soft sigh, feeling utterly drained, and turned to lie down on the bed.

Simon waited in the walk-in closet for a long time, but I didn't go in to help him pick out clothes like I usually did. His figure looked a little lonely.

"What's wrong with you today? Always scowling," he complained with a frown. "It's just some perfume. Why are you making such a big deal out of it? You're really starting to act like a nagging housewife!"

Frustrated, he turned on his heel and stormed toward the entrance. He stopped at the door when he saw Rosalind holding a pair of bloodstained pajamas, ready to clean them.

Simon's eyes narrowed sharply before he grabbed Rosalind's arm. "Those are Irene's. Why is there so much blood?"

Rosalind froze, unsure how to answer. He snatched the pants from her and headed for the bedroom to confront me.

Luckily, just then, his phone rang with a special ringtone. I knew it was Carly.

His face changed the moment he answered.

"Irene, something urgent just came up. I have to go now!"

He tossed the pajamas onto the couch, grabbed his jacket, and disappeared into the night.

It was so late at night, yet one call was enough to make him drop everything and run to another woman without hesitation.

Rosalind looked at me with deep concern. I calmly told her to turn off the lights and prepared to sleep.

The whole night passed, and no one was by my side.

The next morning, Natalie Schuman sent word for me to go to the Schumans' residence.

Entering the living room, I immediately saw Simon standing stiffly, with Carly beside him, tears streaming down her face.

Simon hadn't noticed me. With his back facing me, he spoke to the matriarch, "When Ryan first pursued Carly, he swore he'd give her happiness. But now that she's pregnant, she's being tormented by his mistress. How could he allow this?"

His voice was cold as he pulled Carly closer. "If that's the way he treats Carly, I'll risk everything the Barkers have to take her away!"

I froze completely.

The servants all wisely lowered their heads, but a few braver ones glanced at me with mocking smiles.

Though I'd expected something like this, seeing it with my own eyes still sent a sharp sting through my heart.

Natalie, furious at Simon, noticed me and raised her voice. "You're so protective of Ryan's wife; have you forgotten you have a family, too?

"I heard it took a lot of effort for you to marry Irene. Aren't you supposed to be the perfect couple everyone envies? Don't you have any feelings for her?"

I stood rooted to the spot, eyes fixed hard on Simon's back.

He still wasn't aware of my presence. Instead, he held Carly tighter and said, "Hah, have you forgotten? You said that if Ryan broke off the engagement, the Medinas wouldn't let Carly into the company. So, to clear the way for Carly, I pretended to care for Irene.

"That was the only reason I married her!"

He spoke freely, but when he turned and saw me standing there, his face drained of color.

"Irene…" Simon's lips trembled, and he couldn't find the words to speak.

  • My Safe Harbor   Chapter 10

The Barkers were on the verge of collapse. The only way for me to avoid being dragged down with them was to divorce Simon.John had no interest in power struggles or getting caught up in chaos, yet he had stepped into this mess because of me.A shiver ran through me as I sighed softly. "Ryan is impossible to read."We had once been engaged, and I had given him my whole heart back then. Maybe in our youth, there was something real between us. But in his eyes, none of that mattered compared to power and gain.I nestled close to John with lingering fear in my heart. "Thank goodness things didn't work out, and it brought me to you."He was nothing like Ryan or Simon. He would never treat me like a pawn.John's ears flushed slightly as he pulled me tightly into his arms. "I'm sorry for not stopping you from marrying Simon and letting you suffer so much."I smiled and pressed a gentle kiss to his lips. "I'm not suffering anymore."In the second year of our marriage, I became pregnan

Carly's belly, once softly rounded, was now flat as before. She kept bowing, pleading desperately, "Please forgive me. I never meant to frame you!"Nobody likes me in the Medinas. I was only trying to survive. Was that wrong?"Seeing these people coming to cause trouble on our wedding day, John frowned deeply as he covered my eyes with one hand while directing the bodyguards to escort them away.I took a deep breath, gently tapped his hand, then stepped forward to Simon. He froze for a moment, then lit up with joy and reached out to pull me close. "I knew you still cared about me!"But in the next second, I raised my hand and slapped him hard across the face."This is for your lies, your fake affection, and for ruining our marriage, all for Carly's future."Before he could recover, I struck him again."Our child didn't die that night—I had an abortion. You made me drink milk that contained contraceptives every night because you never wanted me to get pregnant. The child was inn

I heard the moment Simon got home, he headed straight to my room. He then pulled out the divorce papers from the bedside drawer, already signed long ago.Along with them was a list of pregnancy medications and a consent form for the abortion. They were just a few thin sheets stacked together, yet they felt unbearably heavy in his trembling hands.Simon's face turned pale as he caught sight of the bloodstains smeared on the pages. The image of the bloodied pajamas from that night rushed back like a nightmare. In that instant, it became clear to him why I had grown quieter with each passing day, why sadness seemed to settle deeper in my eyes.He had nearly figured out that I had just lost our child. But instead of staying, he had turned his back and rushed to Carly. While he was in Carly's room, smiling as he prepared the pregnancy medications for her, I was at the Barkers, suffering through the pain and despair of losing our baby.Like a man gone mad, Simon tore through my room s

I glanced over at the warming belt resting by the bedside, and on the table, there was chicken soup John had personally prepared. That was when I realized how far people would go when they actually cared about another person. With the Barkers' resources, they wouldn't lack expensive health equipment and supplements. They definitely had them. The point was that I wasn't someone Simon cared about, so he never bothered to show concern for me.But now that I had someone who truly cared about me, the marriage that I once had no expectations of suddenly seemed worth looking forward to.The day before the wedding, Simon appeared at the Medinas, as if he'd suddenly remembered I existed. After I left, rumors spread through the Schumans that Carly had died during childbirth, but she had actually changed her name and become Simon's woman.Simon clearly loved her deeply, so much so that he was willing to raise Ryan's child as his own.He had welcomed Carly into the Barkers with great fanfa

Simon even threatened, "Unless Irene comes back personally to apologize, I will never forgive her. I'll say she was unfaithful and ruin her reputation!"He was so sure I loved him deeply, convinced I'd crawl back to beg for his forgiveness. When I heard this, I couldn't help but smile softly and reply calmly, "If Simon refuses to part ways peacefully, then we'll just have to wait and see."I quickly gathered all the evidence proving our marriage was broken and went to see Natalie, planning to use the Schumans' influence to get the divorce finalized.-John and I were both no longer young, and since this was my second marriage, I expected the wedding to be simple and low-key.But to my surprise, John came to the Medinas himself with wedding gifts twice as lavish as the ones Simon had offered when he proposed. The storage room was packed full.I stared in disbelief, wide-eyed, while John smiled gently. "This is just the tip of the iceberg. Once you marry me, my family has prepare

"I don't care what happens to me, but the child is innocent. Irene, how could you be so heartless?"Simon gently lifted Carly to her feet, then spun around with a fierce glare aimed right at me. Without warning, he slammed his boot hard into my chest. "You've disappointed me."I hit the floor with a loud thud, pain shooting through me as I forced my eyes open. The video playing was a cruel montage—edited and manipulated audio stitched together to make it look like I was plotting against Carly. But Simon seemed to be blind to the truth. The way I usually spoke and acted was nothing like the cold, calculated woman in the video.I curled up on the floor, trembling beside his feet. "Simon, that's not me… The video…"Before I could finish, Carly staggered and collapsed into Simon's arms. From the corner of my eye, I caught her flashing me a mocking, provocative look, right where Simon's gaze couldn't reach.Without hesitation, Simon scooped her up and strode away without a second gla
