FAZER LOGINLYRA
As soon as I was sure nobody was coming back into my room, I grabbed my phone and opened my banking app. The five hundred thousand Zade gave me sat right there in my account, and I stared at the balance longer than I needed to.
Damn. The money was real. So was the deal I’d made with him.
I couldn’t afford to waste any more time, so I pulled up the number the surgeon gave me and called him. He answered after a few rings, and I got straight to the point. We confirmed the amount, and I transferred the money while we were still on the phone.
“Payment received,” he said after checking his end. “Your appointment is in three weeks. I’ll send you the details and everything you need to know before you come in.”
“Three weeks?” I asked, just to be sure I’d heard him right.
“That’s correct. Make sure you follow the instructions I send you.”
“Yeah, okay. I will.”
We ended the call, and a few seconds later, the instructions came through. I saved the appointment in my calendar, then opened the message and read through everything carefully. There were things I needed to do before the surgery, warnings about the risks, and instructions I couldn’t afford to ignore.
I wasn’t stupid. I knew there was no guarantee the transplant would work. I also knew what could happen if I kept putting it off. I’d spent enough time worrying about whether I’d make it to the next month. At some point, I had to stop being scared and do something about it.
For the first time since making the deal with Zade, I let myself think about what came after the surgery.
If everything went well, I’d recover, get out of his penthouse, and start figuring out my life again. I didn’t know where I’d go or how I’d manage on my own, but I’d deal with that when the time came. Anything was better than depending on a man who acted like he could decide what happened to me.
I put my phone down, and a sharp pain shot through my side.
“Ah, shit.”
I pressed my hand against the spot and tried to breathe through it. The pain kept coming in waves, making it hard to get comfortable. I squeezed my eyes shut and waited for it to ease, but all I could think about was the kiss I’d shared with Zade earlier.
The pain I’d been dealing with then had faded when he kissed me. I’d noticed it, sure, but I’d been too caught up in everything else to think much about it.
Now, though, I couldn’t get it out of my head.
What if it wasn’t a coincidence?
I sat on the edge of the bed, trying to make sense of it. Maybe the pain had eased on its own, and the timing was just weird. That made more sense than believing a kiss could somehow make me feel better.
Still, I couldn’t ignore how different I’d felt standing so close to him. There’d been this strange warmth inside me, and now that it was gone, I felt worse than before.
“Okay, Lyra. You’re overthinking this,” I muttered.
I eased myself onto the bed, stretched my legs out, and pulled the blanket over me. I needed rest, and sitting there trying to figure out Zade wasn’t going to help.
I’d worry about it later.
My eyes grew heavy as I settled against the pillows. I meant to close them for a minute, just long enough to let the pain settle.
Somehow, I slept off instead.
A few hours later, I was still asleep when the sound of the front door opening woke me up.
I shifted under the blanket, hoping whoever came in would keep the noise down. Then I heard Zade’s voice downstairs. He sounded like he was talking to one of the security guys, though I couldn’t make out what they were saying.
Great. He was back.
I rolled onto my other side and pulled the blanket up to my chin. Whatever business kept him out all evening was none of my concern. I’d dealt with enough for one day, and the last thing I wanted was another conversation with that man.
Besides, I was still hurting, and I didn’t have the energy to deal with his attitude.
So I closed my eyes again and pretended I hadn’t heard him come in.
A few seconds later, I heard footsteps in the hallway.
They were getting closer.
I opened my eyes, ready to call out and ask whoever it was to leave me alone, but the words died before they could leave my mouth.
Something strange was happening inside my chest. A soft warmth spread through me, and the closer the footsteps came, the stronger it got.
My fingers tightened around the blanket, and I held my breath when a voice finally stirred in the back of my mind.
MATE. MATE
I blinked.
Wait. What?
The word came through so clearly that I couldn’t pretend I’d misunderstood it. My wolf was awake, and she was calling someone her mate.
I didn’t have time to figure it out. My bedroom door suddenly swung open without so much as a knock, and Zade stood in the doorway.
His eyes were glowing.
I stared at him, unable to move, while that strange warmth surged through my chest again. My wolf stirred at the sight of him, and I felt a shiver run down my spine.
Oh, hell no.
There was no way she meant him. Zade was arrogant, controlling, and completely impossible to deal with. Whatever was going on inside me, I couldn’t accept that he was somehow connected to it.
He stepped into the room, his expression leaving no room for an argument. When he spoke, his voice came out low and rough, almost a growl.
“You’re sleeping in my room tonight.”
JULIANI sat at the head of the conference table, listening to my executives explain why my company was falling apart. Two major sponsors pulled their funding that morning, three deals were on the verge of collapse, and one investor threatened to walk if the Croft Group failed to meet its next payment deadline.“Okay, so what exactly are you telling me?” I asked, dropping the report onto the table. “That the whole company is suddenly falling apart because two sponsors pulled out? We’ve dealt with worse than this.”Nobody rushed to agree with me.“We could’ve handled the sponsors,” one director said. “The problem is everything else. The Westbridge contract is stalled, the Sterling negotiations are dead, and nobody followed up with our European partners. They’ve been waiting on approvals for weeks.”“Then why the hell am I hearing about this now?”“Because Lyra used to handle most of those follow-ups.”I stared at him. “And? We have an entire department dedicated to this stuff. Are you
LYRAZade stood between Caspian and me, his golden eyes fixed on the prince. The pressure coming off him was so intense that the guests closest to us had started backing away. Even the security guards seemed unsure whether stepping in was worth the trouble.Honestly, I couldn’t blame them.I’d never seen Zade this angry up close. His shoulders were stiff, his hands curled at his sides, and he looked seconds away from doing something we’d all regret.Caspian, however, didn’t seem interested in making things easier. He straightened his jacket, brushed off the sleeve Zade had grabbed, and met his stare without blinking.“I understand you’re protective of your mate, Alpha Zade, but this matter concerns the Royal Family. Your threats won’t change that.”Zade let out a humorless laugh. “You think I give a damn who your family is?”“I think you should.” Caspian’s gaze shifted to me briefly before returning to Zade. “Lyra could be the Supreme Royal Heir, the rightful successor to the Valerius
LYRACaspian was still staring at my collar like he’d just seen something he never expected to see again.“That’s the lost crest of the Royal Valerius family,” he repeated, his voice low.I kept my expression calm, even though his reaction was starting to get to me. We were standing in the middle of a ballroom packed with wealthy business owners, powerful Alphas, and people who seemed to live for other people’s business. I wasn’t about to give them another reason to whisper about me.“What exactly are you saying, Prince Caspian?” I asked. “And how do you know anything about my birthmark?”His eyes moved across the room before returning to me. “This isn’t something we should discuss here. Could we speak somewhere private?”I wasn’t thrilled about that. “Can’t you explain it here?”“Please, Lyra. It’s important.”Something in his voice made me take him a little more seriously. The charming smile he’d worn earlier was gone, replaced by an expression that seemed almost troubled.“The Roya
LYRAThe hotel ballroom looked like something straight out of a billionaire’s fever dream. Crystal chandeliers hung from the ceiling, waiters moved through the crowd with silver trays, and every other person seemed to be wearing enough jewelry to pay for a house.I walked beside Zade in a deep emerald dress with a high collar that covered the crescent-shaped mark on my neck. My heels were killing me already, but I kept my expression pleasant as we entered the ballroom. The conversations around us dipped, then picked up again in whispers.“That’s him. The Cursed Devil.”“And the woman beside him must be his mate.”“I still don’t understand what he sees in her.”I kept my smile in place. Seriously? If people wanted to talk about me, the least they could do was come up with something original. Still, I wasn’t about to give anyone a reason to call me rude. I’d spent enough time being judged by people who knew absolutely nothing about me.Zade’s hand rested near my waist as he guided me th
LYRAI woke up the next morning with Zade’s words still running through my head. You’re mine now, Lyra. And I don’t share.Seriously, who said something like that and expected me to sleep peacefully afterward?I rolled onto my back and stared at the ceiling. The courtroom kept replaying in my mind, especially the part where Zade stood in front of everyone and announced that I was his fated mate. He sounded so sure of himself, like there wasn’t even room for doubt.Meanwhile, I was still trying to figure out what the hell happened between us at the gala.I felt something when he kissed me. I couldn’t deny that. But did that automatically mean we were fated mates? And if it did, why was he so certain when I barely understood any of it?My phone buzzed on the nightstand, dragging me out of my thoughts. I reached for it, expecting maybe one or two messages. Instead, my screen was packed with notifications.Oh, you’ve got to be kidding me.Gossip blogs, news outlets, and social media accou
LYRAFive days later, I found myself sitting inside the Lycan High Court, wishing I could be anywhere else. The place was intimidating as hell. Powerful Alphas filled the rows, lawyers whispered over stacks of documents, and elders sat at the front like their word was the law and everyone else could just deal with it. Even the way people looked at me made it clear they thought I was in over my head.Zade sat beside me, calm as ever, with his legal team seated on his other side. He hadn’t said much on the drive over, and I wasn’t about to start asking questions when he looked ready to handle this whole thing without breaking a sweat.Elder Thorne, on the other hand, looked like he was having the time of his life. The smug smile on his face told me he’d come prepared to make this as miserable as possible. He stood in front of the court and held up a set of photographs from the gala.“Your Honor, these images show Lyra kissing Alpha Zade Vane in full view of several witnesses,” he said.
