Chapter 4

Author: Peachy Peach
"It was because she started it..."

I tried to explain myself, but Brandon looked at me with nothing but disappointment.

"Lying, hitting people, putting on a show. Cheryl, how did you become like this?

"Cheryl, you're really vicious. Using something like this to gain my sympathy. You even tried to frame Melissa to drive her away."

"That's not true! I didn't!" I cried.

He snatched the shattered bracelet from my arms. "You'd even sacrifice your mother's keepsake just to play the victim? You're disgusting."

With the broken pieces in hand, he turned and walked toward the garden.

He moved so fast I could barely keep up.

I stumbled after him, tripping over flowerpots again and again, crashing to the ground more than once.

"What are you doing? Give it back! That's my mother's!" I rushed to him, grabbing at him desperately.

In the struggle, my nails accidentally scratched his neck, leaving a thin streak of blood.

Brandon struck me across the face.

"Have you lost your mind? Cheryl, what exactly are you trying to do?!"

'Did he just hit me?' I thought.

Since being reborn, all I had wanted was to stay away from them.

I did not want his love anymore. I could even give up the house, so why was I still being treated like this?

"It was Melissa who took my things! She was the one who broke my mother's bracelet! What right do you have to hit me? What right do you have to accuse me without even knowing the truth?" I exclaimed furiously.

"Are you still pretending? How did I never realize you were such a good actress before? I'm deeply disappointed in you."

Brandon raised the pieces of the bracelet up high and suddenly threw it into the garden fountain.

"No!"

Without thinking, I jumped straight into the fountain. The icy winter water sent a violent shiver through my body.

The fountain water was flowing, so the bracelet was swept away almost instantly. I could not see where the pieces had gone.

"Why are you doing this to me?"

I collapsed to my knees in the water, my lips trembling.

"Since your father isn't around, it's my responsibility to teach you some basic manners. In the next two days, you are to buy twenty pieces of jewelry to compensate Melissa. Otherwise, don't even think about seeing me again."

I looked up at his retreating figure.

The droplets on my face, I could not tell if they were from the fountain or my tears.

Mary hurried over with a towel and said anxiously, "Ms. Swanson, please get up. You'll catch a cold like this."

I sat there in the fountain, soaked through, and glanced back toward the house.

Inside the living room, Brandon was comforting Melissa.

He gently wiped away her tears.

For the first time, I felt disgusted at him.

I hated myself for having loved someone like him for ten whole years.

Numb to the world around me, I let Mary dry me off and tuck me into bed.

I was starting to run a fever, my head heavy and dizzy.

I missed my father.

'Just one more night,' I thought.

If I could endure one more night, I could leave that place and never see them again.

That night, I slept in the guest room.

Brandon came in again without knocking.

He held the company's financial report in his hand, his expression cold.

"Why is there a visa expense in the accounts? Where are you going?" he demanded.

"That's none of your business," I huffed and turned away from him.

"Is this because I stood up for Melissa today? Are you throwing a tantrum?"

He sat down at the edge of my bed.

"Melissa comes from a poor family, just like I do. You should treat her better. Also, I'm doing this for your own good. Liking me shouldn't turn you into someone ugly. I don't want to see anything like today happen again. Even if you're jealous, there should be a limit."

My head throbbed so badly I did not even have the strength to argue.

I simply replied, "You're overthinking it. I sincerely wish you and Melissa happiness. From now on, there won't be anything between us."

In the past, for Brandon's sake, I had lowered myself to no end.Just before I hung up, I heard the sound of glass shattering on his end."It's all my fault… I'm the one who lost you…"However, I did not dwell on that call. From the moment I was reborn, there was never going to be anything between us again. In fact, I had something far more important to worry about. The wedding.Three months later, across two lifetimes, I was getting married for the very first time. The full rites, the formal betrothal, the bridal crown and embroidered gown.A traditional wedding carried a solemn, almost sacred weight that felt different from a modern one.I looked at the man before me, dressed in formal wedding attire, the corners of his eyes damp, standing beside my father, crying openly.Perhaps all the pain from my previous life had only existed to make that moment of happiness shine brighter....It was not until years later that I learned that there was a small commotion on our weddi

Barnabas took my tangled fingers into his hand."I respect my fans, but I care about you more. I became an actor for you, and… I want the whole world to bless us."He pulled out a delicate blue velvet box from his pocket. His fingers, gripping the box, trembled slightly.Inside was a massive pink diamond ring."Cheryl, will you marry me? Not because of your father's expectations. Not because of pressure to escape anything. Just… For me."I thought I would hesitate, but I did not.I knew, with complete clarity, that I wanted to be with the man in front of me."I will."Barnabas froze for a second. Then, he was so overwhelmed that he fumbled several times before finally sliding the ring onto my finger."I've rehearsed this moment in my head for almost twenty years," he said softly, almost choking....The moment we got back to the hotel, my phone started buzzing nonstop.A message from my father popped up."Sweetheart, you're trending."I opened my social media applicatio

Brandon's eyes were filled with hope. He spread his arms, just like before, waiting for me to run into his embrace. However, all I could remember was my previous life, the pain of being crushed over and over beneath his car.Instinctively, I pressed a hand to my chest, as if I could still feel that agony."No. I stopped loving you a long time ago. The Cheryl who loved you… You killed her with your own hands."I turned around to leave, but Brandon suddenly rushed forward and grabbed my wrist."Cheryl, stop this. Come back with me."I frowned, trying to shake him off. "Let go!"His eyes reddened like an abandoned puppy."You're still angry at me, aren't you? I'll apologize! It was all my fault. I was blind before, but from now on, I won't even look at another woman! Cheryl, I can't live without you. Please… Don't leave me."A flicker of fear rose in me.Barnabas stepped forward and forcefully pried Brandon's fingers off my wrist."She told you to let go. Do you not understand

"You don't have to apologize. Even if you were too busy to reply, it's okay. I'll just find my own way back to you," Barnabas replied warmly."Didn't you once say your future husband had to be a big star?"He looked at me gently and blinked playfully. "Well... I made it happen."Something in my chest softened. It was a childish thing I had said while playing pretend, yet he had remembered it until then.Suddenly, the sunlight was blocked.A tall figure loomed over me.Brandon, eyes bloodshot, reached out as if to pull me into his arms."Cheryl, I finally found you!"Barnabas knocked his hand away in one swift motion, stepping in front of me."Don't you dare touch her."Brandon seemed to notice Barnabas only then, but with his sunglasses on, he probably could not recognize him."Are you her bodyguard? Get lost. Do you even know who I am?"I did not want to cause a scene in the middle of the street, so I asked quietly, "What do you want?""I miss you. So much so that I'm go

He ventured into Brilwood two years ago, and that year, he swept all three major Methsbian film awards.Without a doubt, he was the top actor in Granoa.I remembered how, just before boarding the plane, my father had mysteriously pushed him toward me, winking as he did."Sweetheart, I vetted this one myself. Brandon sat on the sofa, watching as Melissa tried on one outfit after another."Does this look good?" she asked. He nodded absentmindedly, but suddenly, I crossed his mind. When I was little, I used to trail behind him in princess dresses, saying that one day, I would wear the most beautiful wedding gown and become his bride.Back then, he did not seem so resistant. When did that change? It seemed to have started after he entered the company and began to gain real power.Every time someone mentioned my father's kindness toward him, his rejection and disgust toward me deepened. Those favors felt like shackles to him, and I was the physical embodiment of them.Suddenly, he felt the urge to go check on me.Brandon stood up abruptly. "I'll go see Cheryl. She hasn't eaten this morning."Melissa tugged at his sleeve. "If she's not eating, it's just because she's throwing a tantrum. Let her be. Don't worry, Mary will take care of her."Brandon forced himself to sit back down and
