Chapter 3

Author: Triple Threat
Mom filled Dad in on what had happened, especially how I'd refused to let Mike take Jocelyn.

Dad frowned. "We can feed the baby ourselves. You can go take care of something else for now."

His voice was gentle, but his tone left no room for argument.

Mike's face twitched, and for a second, his expression nearly cracked. He forced a dry smile.

"Sir, your wife just gave birth. Breastfeeding can take a lot out of her, so it would be better if I—"

"That won't be necessary."

Dad cut him off again, his eyes turning wary.

Mom held me in one arm and kept her other hand on Jocelyn's swaddle, making it clear that Mike could leave.

Mike's gaze lingered on Jocelyn for a few seconds. Curled up in Mom's arms, I could tell from his eyes that he wasn't ready to give up.

Then he turned and walked out.

I leaned close to Mom's ear and whispered, "I'm scared, Mommy."

Mom took off my shoes and pulled me into her arms to comfort me.

Dad sat back down on the couch without a word, keeping his eyes on Jocelyn and me.

"Don't be scared," Mom said.

Seeing the warmth in Mom and Dad's eyes, I finally relaxed. My eyelids grew heavier and heavier until they finally slipped shut.

I felt relieved. This time, no one was going to steal Jocelyn away.

I didn't wake until the sun was already high the next morning. The moment I opened my eyes in Mom's arms, I looked for Jocelyn.

But she was gone.

I stood on the bed, my face draining of color as tears streamed down my cheeks. "Jocelyn's gone!"

My crying woke Mom and Dad.

The moment Mom saw the empty spot beside her, her eyes turned red. "Where's Jocelyn? Where did she go?"

Dad's hands were shaking too. "When did I fall asleep? I wasn't even trying to sleep..."

The last thing he remembered was the night before.

After Mike left, Mom had fallen asleep with me in her arms. Dad stayed on the couch, determined to watch over us until morning.

Then, without warning, his eyelids grew heavy, and his thoughts turned hazy. When he woke up, Jocelyn was gone.

Panic and despair filled his voice. "Honey, stay calm. The hospital has security cameras. Jocelyn's going to be okay."

Mom collapsed onto the bed, breathing hard and trembling all over.

The scene was painfully familiar. It took me back to the day Jocelyn disappeared in my previous life.

Mom had cried so hard she could barely see, slapping herself over and over. Dad had held her tightly, his face as white as a sheet. I had huddled in a corner, terrified, doing nothing but cry.

This time, Dad was the one blaming himself, but otherwise nothing had changed.

Even after getting a second chance, was I really going to fail to protect Jocelyn again?

Hospital security arrived within minutes. Dr. Telfer, the hospital director, showed up with Mom's attending physician and several nurses. Soon, the room was packed.

The commotion had even drawn relatives of patients from other floors.

Dad demanded, "Who was on duty last night? What happened to the security cameras? Where is my daughter?"

Sweat beaded across Dr. Telfer's forehead.

One of the security guards went pale. "Mr. Cooper, the security cameras went down last night. We're still trying to figure out what happened."

Dad was livid. "You people are useless!"

Relatives of other patients gathered in the hallway, whispering among themselves.

"I heard a newborn went missing. A baby girl."

"What kind of parents can't even keep track of their own child?"

"Exactly. And they're rich, too. Now they're crying over it?"

The color slowly drained from Mom's face as she listened. Her lips trembled, and her nails dug into her palms until they bled.

Dad swayed on his feet, then slapped himself hard across the face. The sharp crack silenced the entire hallway for a moment.

Inside the room, Mom sobbed while Dad blamed himself. The doctors and nurses were tense, and the onlookers watched coldly as one mocking comment after another came our way.

I stood in the corner with tears streaming down my face, completely lost and with no idea what to do.

Jocelyn blew little bubbles and smiled at me.I gently squeezed her hand and whispered, "Grow up fast and be as kind as Mommy."Jocelyn didn't understand a word. She just babbled at me.But I was sure that meant yes.A few years later, I was in elementary school, and Jocelyn chased me all over the house. She looked like Dad and had beautiful eyes, but she had Mom's stubborn streak. Once she made up her mind, no one could talk her out of it.Her favorite thing was clutching my backpack and refusing to let me leave for school."Don't go, Ivan. Stay with me."I never knew what to do with her.Dad would just stand there laughing. "Jocelyn, let go."She immediately pouted. "No."Mom laughed and picked her up. "Ivan has to go to school. He'll be home tonight."Jocelyn looked thoroughly put out. "School is bad."I headed for the door with my backpack on, then paused and looked back.Mom stood in the sunlight with Jocelyn in her arms. Dad stood behind her, and Grandma sat in her

In my previous life, Mom hadn't been able to go on. Neither had Dad.They loved each other deeply, and they loved Jocelyn and me just as much. Losing Jocelyn broke them both. But this life was different.Jocelyn was back. Mom and Dad were both still here. Our whole family was together. For Jocelyn's one-month celebration party, Dad kept things small. He said Jocelyn had already been through enough, and Mom needed some peace and quiet. So he only invited the people closest to us.Grandma held Jocelyn in her arms, beaming. "Our little girl is so lucky to have such an amazing brother."The relatives gathered around me too, all praising me."Ivan, you did such a great job.""Ivan, you're our little hero."I got a little embarrassed by all the attention and hid in Mom's arms. She kissed my forehead. "Ivan, thank you for saving Jocelyn."I shook my head. "I want to save Mommy too."Mom froze, and Dad looked over at me.I realized I'd said too much and quickly wrapped my arms aro

I piped up in my childish voice, "Why did you have to use Jocelyn to get a better life?"Mike whipped his head toward me, hatred, fear, and resentment flashing in his eyes. "This is all because of you. If it weren't for you, I would've pulled it off. How could a three-year-old know?"Dad's arms tightened around me.I blinked at Mike. "Because bad guys smell bad."Dad looked down at me, his eyes softening with worry.Mike looked completely unhinged. "I had everything planned out. My aunt would take the baby, and I'd stay at the hospital so no one would suspect me. Once things died down, I'd leave Glemston."I'd give her a new name and tell her I was the one who saved her. Then, when she grew up, I'd bring her back. The Hansons would compensate me for raising her. Why wouldn't it work?"Dad stared at him coldly. "Because she's not a tool. She's my daughter. She's the child my wife carried for nine months. She's Ivan's little sister. She's not a stepping stone to a better life."M

Dr. Telfer's face went white.I knew Mom wasn't bluffing. The Hansons never threw their weight around, but we also never let anyone get away with hurting one of our own.By noon, the missing newborn case had made the news.At first, people online were still criticizing us. They said rich people were making a big deal out of nothing, that the nurse was just a regular guy doing his job, and that no one should take a three-year-old's word seriously. But then the police released their findings.Mike and Tracy were suspected of child abduction, deliberately drugging someone, and tampering with surveillance equipment. Hospital staff were also suspected of helping them carry it out.The criticism disappeared almost instantly, replaced by apologies."Oh my God, the baby was only one day old.""That kid is seriously smart.""A three-year-old saved his little sister and his whole family.""Everyone who attacked them earlier needs to apologize!"Mom wouldn't let me look at her phone, b

After examining Jocelyn, the doctor said she was going to be okay. She was shaken up and slightly oxygen-deprived, but there was no serious harm. The doctor said that if we'd found her any later, things could've been much worse.Mom held Jocelyn and cried for a long time.Dad sat beside her, telling her over and over, "She's okay now. She really is."But I knew Mom was terrified. Her hands wouldn't stop shaking. She could barely hold a cup steady enough to drink.Dad had the entire floor restaffed. Every nurse, cleaner, and security guard who had been working there was put under investigation. He also had Grandma come over with the family's bodyguards. When Grandma arrived, she was shaking so badly she could barely hold her cane. The moment she walked in, she pulled me into her arms. "Ivan, were you scared?"I shook my head, but the second I tried to speak, I started crying. "Grandma, we almost lost Jocelyn."Grandma's eyes filled with tears too. "But we didn't. You were so br

  • My Second Chance to Save My Sister   Chapter 8

Dad looked down at me, and his tears finally fell.He crouched down and pulled me into his arms. "Ivan, Daddy almost lost all of you."I reached up and wiped his tears away. "You didn't. I got Jocelyn back. From now on, we'll watch over her together."Dad held me so tightly it hurt a little, but I didn't pull away. I knew he was terrified. The police took Mike and Tracy away. As they led him out, Mike was still crying. He turned to Mom and begged, "Ms. Hanson, I know I was wrong. I wasn't thinking straight. My family is poor, and I just wanted a better life. The baby wasn't hurt, so please let me go."Mom looked at him coldly. "Wasn't hurt? She's only a day old. You stuffed her into a linen cart, shoved gauze into her mouth, and drugged my husband. And you have the nerve to tell me she wasn't hurt?"Mike cried even harder. "I really wasn't trying to hurt her. I just wanted to take her away. I would've taken care of her."A chill ran through me.He'd promised the same thing in
