Lily did my hair, because Lily had asked to and I had not been able to find a way to say no that wasn't a lie.
"Hold still."
"I am still."
"You're vibrating." She got another pin in. "There. That's the last one, and if you touch it I'll break your fingers."
The hut was warm. Somebody had brought flowers in, actual flowers, and Sandra had spent the afternoon sewing the hem of a dress that had belonged to Jenna's mother and now, apparently
~Nyla~"He's split the trail!" Jenna shouted back over the hooves, hauling her mare around at the fork. "Two sets of prints, and one of them's a decoy!"I dragged on the reins, my horse stamping and blowing under me, and Oswald pulled up beside me so close our stirrups clashed."Which one?" he barked, his eyes raking the dark ground."The deep one." Jenna slid down and pressed her palm flat into the mud, her jaw tight. "The rider carrying real weight. The other set lifts at every stride.""Then we take the deep one." Oswald wheeled his horse northeast, the words rough in his throat. "Redmayne holds the walls. We don't stop."Redmayne had stayed behind at the gate with a sealed order crushed in his fist and his face gone grey as ash. Burn the ledger page if anyone but Oswald asks for it. He'd nodded twice, his hands shaking, and we'd been gone before he finished bowing. We rode another hour before the horses
~Oswald's POV~"Keep reading," Jenna urged, her voice gone hoarse, one hand braced flat on the table as though the floor had shifted under her.I turned the page toward the candle and read on, and the room held its breath around me.I write this before she comes. Understand that first, or none of the rest will serve you. She has not yet walked through your gates. She will not for some months yet, and when she does she will come alone on foot, refusing any escort your men offer her at the road. She will ask for shelter. Then she will ask for a name. Give her the first and lie about the second.Redmayne made a sound somewhere behind me, low and wounded. She will ask for the eastern tower. She will ask for it by name, before any soul in your hall has spoken of it, and the asking will feel to you like a small strange thing, easily granted.Do not grant it.My hands had begun to shak
~Oswald's POV~"Is there more?" I demanded, before Redmayne had even lifted his finger off the page. "Turn it. Now."He obeyed, his hands trembling as he worked the brittle parchment, careful not to tear what four centuries had already left fragile."Here." He bent close over the page, squinting in the failing candlelight, and read aloud with his voice thinning on every word. "She came alone, refusing the escort offered her at the gate. She asked for no chamber save the eastern tower, and named it before any man in the hall had spoken its location aloud."The cold that settled behind my ribs had nothing to do with the night air coming through the broken shutters."The eastern tower," I repeated. "That's where she's kept her cell every year since. The same tower. Four hundred years in a room she asked for before anyone told her it existed.""East." Jenna's head came up sharp, her eyes narrowing. "The old ground was east. Artemis
~Nyla~"Corwyn's dead," the messenger gasped, before he'd even fully cleared the doorway. "Second patrol caught them at the fork past Ashfell."Jenna crossed the room so fast the candle guttered in her wake. "Dead how?""He wouldn't give up the prisoner." The messenger's chest heaved, sweat cutting pale tracks through the soot on his face. "They called for his surrender twice. He drew on them instead. Took two of ours down with him before they put him on the ground.""And Artemis?" Oswald demanded, his hand closing hard on the edge of Vann's writing table."Gone." The word came out flat, and the man's eyes dropped to the floorboards rather than meet any of ours. "Taken in the scramble. Three riders came out of the treeline while the patrol was still standing over Corwyn's body. Nobody saw which way they went after the ridge."The room went quiet in a way that felt worse than shouting.Jenna's hands curled into fists at h
~Oswald's POV~"Vann," Redmayne said. The name hung there, flat and impossible, and for a moment I couldn't make it mean anything at all. Vann had served the household since before I could walk. Vann had taught me to hold a blade properly when I was seven years old, patient through every clumsy swing I'd thrown at a practice post, never once raising his voice no matter how many times I'd sent the wooden sword clattering out of my own grip."You're certain," I said. My voice came out steadier than I felt."The list doesn't lie, my lord." Redmayne's hand trembled around the parchment. "Vann's had a key to that strongbox for eleven years. Since your father trusted him with it.""My father trusted a great many men," I said, and heard the edge creeping into my own voice. "Trust isn't proof.""No," Nyla said quietly, beside me. "But it isn't nothing either."I wanted to argue with her. I wanted the disbelief sitting hard in my
~Nyla~"That's yours," Redmayne said again, quieter this time, like saying it twice might change what the ledger showed. The guards nearest us shifted, hands drifting toward hilts that hadn't been drawn a moment before. I felt the change in the corridor before I understood it, a stiffening in every man's shoulders, eyes sliding toward Oswald in a way they hadn't been sliding a minute ago."I signed nothing," Oswald said. His voice stayed level, but I caught the tightness at the corner of his jaw, the same tell he'd shown me at the old ground when he was holding something back. "I've been east since before dawn. You know that, Redmayne. You saw us ride out.""I know," Redmayne said, and his hands shook faintly around the ledger's spine. "I'm not accusing you, my lord. I'm telling you what the log shows, because someone else will read it before I get the chance to explain it kindly."
