~Nyla~

"Horrors?" I repeated, my voice cracking on the word.

I expected to see flames. I expected the underworld, or nothing at all. Instead, I was lying on hard-packed earth, the scent of grass and smoke still clinging to my skin.

Oswald Ashborne was standing over me, very much alive, very much unmarked by the death I'd watched claim him.

I scrambled backward, putting distance between us before I even understood why. My hands hit dirt, not ash. Not fire.

"Careful." He didn't move to help me. He just watched, arms folded, waiting to see what I would do next like I was something curious he'd stumbled across in the woods.

I looked around. The clearing. The same clearing where the coming of age ceremony had been held. Except there were no drummers, no dancers, no altar. No priestess. No crowd chanting for my death.

"How am I here?" I whispered, more to myself than to him.

"You collapsed." He said it plainly, like it was an unremarkable thing, a wolf fainting in the grass. "I was passing through and found you. You've been muttering in your sleep for the better part of an hour."

An hour. Not three days. Not a lifetime. An hour.

I touched my throat. No mark. No scar from his teeth. My whole body still remembered the phantom press of his mouth against my skin but there was nothing there now. Just smooth, unclaimed skin.

I looked up at him properly for the first time since waking. His face was the same — the same sharp jaw, the same storm-grey eyes I used to trace with my fingertips while he slept. But something in his expression was wrong. The Oswald I knew had never once looked at me like I was a stranger to be assessed.

"You said my name in your sleep." He tilted his head slightly. "Oswald. Over and over. Care to explain how an omega who's never set foot on my land knows my name?"

My chest ached like the fire had reached it after all.

"Everyone knows your name." I managed. "You're the alpha."

"Everyone knows my title." He corrected. "Not everyone screams it in their sleep like a woman drowning." His eyes narrowed, studying me the way I imagined he studied enemies before a battle. "Who are you?"

"Nyla." My voice came out smaller than I wanted it to. "Nyla Moonke."

Something crossed his face at the name — the briefest flicker, gone before I could name it. Recognition, maybe. Or the ghost of something that hadn't happened yet.

"Moonke." He repeated it slowly, like he was testing the shape of it in his mouth. "The runt from the orphan home."

Of course he knew that much. Everyone did. It was the only thing about me anyone ever bothered to remember.

"Yes." I lowered my eyes, old shame rising in me automatically, even though I'd once stood beside this same man as his crowned Luna, commanding sentinels and negotiating with elders. That woman felt very far away now, burned to nothing along with everything else.

"You have no wolf." It wasn't a question.

"No." I admitted.

"And yet here you are, unconscious in my territory, calling my name like you know me." He crouched slightly, bringing himself eye level with me, and I had to fight the urge to reach for him the way I once did, without thought, without fear. "So tell me, Nyla Moonke. Do you know me?"

I want to belong to you. I want to be your Luna again. I want to warn you that someone is going to poison your wine and I am going to watch you die in my arms and then burn for a crime I never committed.

None of it would sound like anything but madness.

"No." I shook my head, forcing steadiness into my voice. "I don't know you. I must have had a fever dream. People say strange things when they're sick."

He didn't look convinced, but he didn't push either. He straightened back to his full height, putting distance between us again, like he'd caught himself leaning too close and didn't like it.

"You should go home." He said. "Whatever this was."

"I don't have a home." The words slipped out before I could stop them, bitter and honest. "Just a shack near the runts' quarters."

Something shifted in his face again — not quite pity, but close to it. I hated it. I didn't want his pity. I'd had a lifetime of pity from people who never once tried to help.

"Can you stand?" He asked instead.

I pushed myself upright, testing my legs. They held, though barely. I refused to let him see me stumble.

"I'm fine." I said, even though nothing about me was fine. I had died. I had burned. And now I was standing in a clearing with the same man who used to call me little wolf, and he was looking at me like I was a stranger who'd wandered too far from where I belonged.

"Good." He said, already turning to leave. Then he paused, glancing back at me over his shoulder. "Nyla Moonke."

"Yes?"

"Stay out of my territory unless you have business here." His tone was flat, final, giving nothing away. But his eyes lingered on me a moment too long before he turned and walked into the trees, leaving me alone in the clearing with my racing heart and a hundred unanswered questions.

I stood there long after he'd disappeared, staring at the space where he'd been.

He didn't remember me. He didn't love me. He didn't even like me, not yet. Everything I had — his devotion, his protection, his mark on my throat — I would have to earn all over again, brick by brick, with no guarantee the ending would be any different.

But I was alive. I was here. And whoever had poisoned him once would try again, unless I stopped them first.

I straightened my spine, wiped the dirt from my knees, and made my way back toward the only home I had ever known, already turning over every memory I had of the months before his death, searching for the first thread that would lead me to whoever wanted him dead.

This time, I told myself, I would not fail him.

This time, I would not burn.

~Nyla~"Then we don't all go."Oswald said it to the five of us at the wall an hour after dawn, and I watched every one of them work out what it meant before he'd finished saying it."Kerrin. You take the beta home."Kerrin's head came up. "Alone?""Vann goes with you. Two of you, one prisoner, hard riding, and you're at the ford in four days." Oswald crouched and drew it in the dirt with his finger, the road and the river and the bend. "You do not take him through the gate. You hand him to Corwyn at the crossing and Corwyn holds him on Duskmoor's side of the water, under Duskmoor's roof, with a Duskmoor guard."Vann frowned. "Alpha, that's — he's our beta. You'd give him to another pack?""I'd give him to the only wolves in five kingdoms that old man hasn't been sitting with for two generations." Oswald stood. "Corwyn's held that bank eleven days and he's told me to my face his own men are sleeping badly. He'll be

~Oswald~"Nobody move."It came again. Not loud. That was the thing about it — it was a small sound, and it came from behind a slab of stone set into a hill, and it was the sound of something very large shifting its weight a long way off.Kerrin had his blade out. "Alpha—""Put that away. What are you going to do with it?"He put it away.We stood there in the grey light for a long time and it did not come again."Six hours." Artemis was still on the ground where they'd dropped him. "Six hours I had my ear against that and there was nothing. I told you. It was the quietest thing I've ever put my hands on.""And now?""And now the line's hanging." He wouldn't look at it. "You've all seen it. It's slack from top to bottom and it's slack because of me, and whatever's in there has spent four hundred years not being able to hear us.""And it can now.""I don't know, Alpha." His voice cr

~Nyla~"Tie them behind him.""Alpha, he can't work the stone with his hands behind—""In front, then, and short." Oswald had the rope himself. "Wrists to a belt. He gets two feet of reach and no more, and Vann, you keep hold of the slack and you do not let go of it if he asks you nicely.""And if he asks me not nicely?""Then it'll be easier for you."Artemis stood and let them do it. That was the part I could not get used to — he had spent four minutes on that hillside outrunning two armed wolves and now he stood with his arms out like a man being fitted for a coat."You'll want a lamp." He said. "It's dark work and it gets darker.""We've two.""Then put them both on my hands and none on my face." He looked at Oswald. "I'm serious about that. Nobody watches my face. If it comes back it'll come back there first and every one of you will be looking for it, and the moment you're looking at me yo

~Oswald~"Everything's only a knot, if you sit with it long enough.""Get behind me.""Alpha—""Behind me, Jenna. Now."She came, which surprised me, and it was the only thing that went the way I wanted it in the next four minutes.Artemis stayed sitting. That was the worst of it. He sat against that fallen wall with the rope in a loose coil in his lap and looked up at five armed wolves with the pleasant, unhurried patience of a man waiting for a cart."You've all gone very serious." He said."Beta." I kept my voice level. "Put your hands back in the rope.""Now why would I do that?""Because you asked me to. An hour ago, on that step, in front of your daughter.""Did I?" He considered it. "That doesn't sound like me. I've been cold and I've been tired and I daresay I said a great many things. You'll not hold a man to what he says with two days of stone in his back.""Vann. Kerrin

~Nyla~"Don't come any closer."Artemis said it without opening his eyes. He was sitting on the step with his back against the door and his hands loose in his lap, and he had been there long enough that the frost had got into his coat.Jenna stopped six feet short of him. I do not know how she managed it."Da.""Jenna." His eyes came open. "Ah. There you are. I've been trying not to want that.""Are you—""I'm me." He said. "Since about noon. It's been coming and going since we crossed the river and it's been going more than coming, so I'd not waste it."Oswald came up on the other side with Vann behind him."Artemis.""Alpha." His mouth moved, not quite a smile. "You'll want to know what I've done. I'll tell you the lot and I'll be quick, and then I'll ask you for something, and I'd like you to hear it all before you decide.""Go on.""I've opened it." He said. The wind came ove

~Nyla~"Don't drink that."Kerrin had the skin halfway to his mouth and stopped. "It's ours, Jenna. It came off the wall.""I know where it came from. Don't drink it here." She was already off her horse, walking a wide circle round the hollow we'd come down into. "Not in this. Get back up the slope and drink it there.""That's twenty paces.""Then it's twenty paces." Jenna's voice had gone flat. "Look at your horse."We all looked at his horse. It was standing perfectly still with its head up and its ears forward and it had not moved a muscle since we came down into that ground, and neither had any of the others, and none of them had touched the grass. We went back up the slope. Every one of us, without arguing about it, and Kerrin drank his water at the top and did not say anything for an hour afterward.* * *The old ground did not look like anything. That was the part I could not get past.
