LOGINThe man I love more than anyone in this world, Don Carlo Guardia, has spent ten years loathing me because of his one true love, Margherita Carrettiere. We torment each other until the final days of my life, when he sets aside all his Famiglia's affairs and stays by my deathbed, patiently feeding me my favorite grapes. "Giovannina, if I were given another chance, I wish I had never met you," he tells me with bloodshot eyes. Three days after I am laid to rest, before the entire Famiglia, he raises a gun to his temple and ends his life at my grave. When I open my eyes again, the first thing I hear is the heated argument echoing through my Famiglia's council chamber. A rival Famiglia has obtained all the evidence of our underground financial network. Their terms are clear. If we want this war to end, we must hand over one of our heirs to stand trial. In my previous life, my Papa, Guglielmo Carrettiere, cannot bear to sacrifice me. So, he sends my younger sister, Margherita, who suffers from a heart condition, in my place. Ultimately, she dies a tragic death. Consequently, Carlo spends the rest of his life resenting me. I rise to my feet and speak up before the astonished eyes of my Famiglia's Consiglieri. "Papa, please hand me over. As for the marriage alliance with the Guardia Famiglia… have Margherita take my place." Now that I've been given another chance at life, I choose to give up on Carlo and fulfill his wish to be with Margherita.
View MoreGiovannina's POV After leaving the pretrial detention center, Carlo completely lost his mind. He pressured Papa to rescind his order and get me out, but for the sake of the Famiglia and Margherita, Papa refused. Carlo then tried to force Margherita to come in and take my place. "Giovannina volunteered. I can't go there and throw my life away again!" she wept. All of a sudden, Carlo realized how terrible Margherita's acting really was. Yet, he had chosen to believe her. That was when he started digging into everything. He discovered that Margherita had paid people off to frame me inside the pretrial detention center, which had resulted in me being locked away in the Black Cell. He also discovered that Margherita was the one who had leaked the information that plunged my Famiglia into this crisis. None of this was news to me. Carlo rallied his Famiglia and had Margherita turned over to the Alliance. Meanwhile, I sat quietly in the office of the Boss of the Alliance, watching
Giovannina's POVCarlo shook his head, staring at me in disbelief."I got what I wished for and married you. Then, at a gathering, I drank the poisoned wine a rival Famiglia had prepared for you. Unaware of the truth, you paid me a single visit on my deathbed. At the time, you told me that if you were given another chance, you wished you'd never met me."Carlo blanched, as if something had detonated inside his head."No…" He clutched his forehead in agony. "Everything you said… It feels like I have seen it all with my own eyes."His voice trembled. "In my memories, you were even thinner than you are now, lying in a hospital bed, struggling just to breathe a word while I desperately called out your name… That really happened, didn't it?"I nodded calmly. "That was our previous life."Burying his face in his hands, he sobbed and apologized to me repeatedly. "I had no idea… I didn't know things would turn out like this, Giovannina!"The pain I had suffered in my past life had long
Giovannina's POV"This is all your fault! You're the reason I ended up in the pretrial detention center!" he snarled.I recognized him. He had previously served as the Underboss in charge of my Famiglia's money laundering operations. Margherita had exposed him, and because of that, she had even received praise from the Famiglia. There was but one explanation—someone had bought him off. So, I stopped backing away. Instead, I seized his wrist, slammed him hard onto the floor, and ripped the blade from his grip. "Who put you up to this?" I demanded. He blanched, but he gritted his teeth, refusing to utter a word. I was about to force it out of him when the warden barged in. "Giovannina, you used violence in the detention area. I have no choice but to throw you in the Black Cell!"No one stepped in when others tried to harm me, yet the moment I fought back, I was shut down. Even the blade that had been meant to harm me was completely ignored. Not a single soul stood up for me.
Giovannina's POV"Giovannina Carrettiere!" the warden spat out. "You've hidden a forbidden communication device in the pretrial detention center while awaiting trial. According to the Alliance's laws, you'll be thrown into the Black Cell." I lifted my gaze to look at the communication device. It wasn't mine, but I didn't explain myself. Explanations were useless in the pretrial detention center. When these people wanted to punish someone, they only needed an excuse. The gods only knew how many people this crew had tortured to death using whatever flimsy pretense they could pull out of thin air. Two wardens seized my arms and dragged me through an underground passage that had never been opened before. The farther down we went, the colder it became. Word had it that the Black Cell wasn't a place for imprisonment but a place to test a person's resolve. No one would torment you there, yet almost no one who entered ever made it back out. The heavy steel door slowly creaked open. T
