Chapter 2

Author: alone
Giovannina's POV

After I returned to Capello Manor, I began packing my belongings.

Those who were sent to stand trial weren't allowed to take anything with them. Even their Famiglia name would be stripped away. From the moment I stepped onto the trial grounds, I would cease to exist in this world.

Yet, Mamma's belongings were here, and I had to protect them.

I didn't get a wink of sleep that night. I would be lying if I said I wasn't afraid. Almost no one who was sent to stand trial ever survived.

In my previous life, after Margherita was sent to trial, her body was shipped back disfigured beyond recognition.

The entire underworld said that no one could ever come out of that place alive.

In that case, what about me? How long would I be able to hold out in there?

Before I left, I intended to visit Mamma's grave one last time.

However, the moment I stepped outside, I was stopped by Carlo. He seized my wrist in a vice-like grip and seethed, "Giovannina, I order you to go apologize to Margherita right this instant."

I looked at him in total confusion, unaware of what had happened.

"Are you seriously trying to drive your sister to her death, you vicious woman?" He dragged me back into the manor.

"You're not leaving this estate until you apologize to her! Regardless of what you were going to do, you must apologize to Margherita! The one who should stand trial has been you all along!"

In my previous life, after Margherita died, he had said the exact same thing to me with red-rimmed eyes. He had refused to listen to my explanations and insisted on locking me inside the manor.

Looking at him with teary eyes, I begged him to let me go. I didn't have much time left. When Papa surrendered me, he had specifically requested one day's time for me from the Alliance.

Carlo looked me in the eye before letting go of me and softening his tone. "I won't hurt you."

He paused before adding, "As long as you apologize to Margherita, you can leave right now."

My heart went numb. I stopped resisting and let him lock me up.

I had observed my surroundings. Even if he didn't release me, I could still escape.

The only problem was the thickets of brambles Margherita had planted along the perimeter walls years ago.

It took me a great deal of effort to get through them, and my hands and legs inevitably got cuts and scrapes in the process. Ignoring the pain, I forced myself to leave Capello Manor.

Giovannina's POV After leaving the pretrial detention center, Carlo completely lost his mind. He pressured Papa to rescind his order and get me out, but for the sake of the Famiglia and Margherita, Papa refused. Carlo then tried to force Margherita to come in and take my place. "Giovannina volunteered. I can't go there and throw my life away again!" she wept. All of a sudden, Carlo realized how terrible Margherita's acting really was. Yet, he had chosen to believe her. That was when he started digging into everything. He discovered that Margherita had paid people off to frame me inside the pretrial detention center, which had resulted in me being locked away in the Black Cell. He also discovered that Margherita was the one who had leaked the information that plunged my Famiglia into this crisis. None of this was news to me. Carlo rallied his Famiglia and had Margherita turned over to the Alliance. Meanwhile, I sat quietly in the office of the Boss of the Alliance, watching

  • My Second Life: Ditching the Mafia Don   Chapter 11

Giovannina's POVCarlo shook his head, staring at me in disbelief."I got what I wished for and married you. Then, at a gathering, I drank the poisoned wine a rival Famiglia had prepared for you. Unaware of the truth, you paid me a single visit on my deathbed. At the time, you told me that if you were given another chance, you wished you'd never met me."Carlo blanched, as if something had detonated inside his head."No…" He clutched his forehead in agony. "Everything you said… It feels like I have seen it all with my own eyes."His voice trembled. "In my memories, you were even thinner than you are now, lying in a hospital bed, struggling just to breathe a word while I desperately called out your name… That really happened, didn't it?"I nodded calmly. "That was our previous life."Burying his face in his hands, he sobbed and apologized to me repeatedly. "I had no idea… I didn't know things would turn out like this, Giovannina!"The pain I had suffered in my past life had long

  • My Second Life: Ditching the Mafia Don   Chapter 10

Giovannina's POV"This is all your fault! You're the reason I ended up in the pretrial detention center!" he snarled.I recognized him. He had previously served as the Underboss in charge of my Famiglia's money laundering operations. Margherita had exposed him, and because of that, she had even received praise from the Famiglia. There was but one explanation—someone had bought him off. So, I stopped backing away. Instead, I seized his wrist, slammed him hard onto the floor, and ripped the blade from his grip. "Who put you up to this?" I demanded. He blanched, but he gritted his teeth, refusing to utter a word. I was about to force it out of him when the warden barged in. "Giovannina, you used violence in the detention area. I have no choice but to throw you in the Black Cell!"No one stepped in when others tried to harm me, yet the moment I fought back, I was shut down. Even the blade that had been meant to harm me was completely ignored. Not a single soul stood up for me.

  • My Second Life: Ditching the Mafia Don   Chapter 9

Giovannina's POV"Giovannina Carrettiere!" the warden spat out. "You've hidden a forbidden communication device in the pretrial detention center while awaiting trial. According to the Alliance's laws, you'll be thrown into the Black Cell." I lifted my gaze to look at the communication device. It wasn't mine, but I didn't explain myself. Explanations were useless in the pretrial detention center. When these people wanted to punish someone, they only needed an excuse. The gods only knew how many people this crew had tortured to death using whatever flimsy pretense they could pull out of thin air. Two wardens seized my arms and dragged me through an underground passage that had never been opened before. The farther down we went, the colder it became. Word had it that the Black Cell wasn't a place for imprisonment but a place to test a person's resolve. No one would torment you there, yet almost no one who entered ever made it back out. The heavy steel door slowly creaked open. T

  • My Second Life: Ditching the Mafia Don   Chapter 8

Giovannina's POVAfter midnight, the entire area fell dead silent. Leaning against the wall, I was wide awake. There was no real nighttime here. The stark overhead lights remained on around the clock, and the patrol made its rounds every 30 minutes—one wrong move, and someone could vanish into thin air.I couldn't afford to take the risk. All I could do was keep my eyes shut, tuning into every rustle and murmur around me.The following day, Caterina began targeting me on purpose. She made me scrub bloodstains, haul away dead bodies, and even intentionally spilled scalding hot soup over my hands. I merely looked at her calmly without making a single move to resist. I was well aware that they wanted me to fight back just so they'd have an excuse to torture me until I died. All I could do was wait.Slowly, it dawned on them that no matter how they treated me, I was dead to emotion. I didn't fight back, I didn't beg for mercy, and I didn't shed a tear. I bottled everything up insid

  • My Second Life: Ditching the Mafia Don   Chapter 7

Giovannina's POVThe pretrial detention center was far more grueling than I had imagined. It was built at the edge of the coast, and the underground fortress was dark and damp. There was no mercy here, only endless blood. Those held here had to endure day after day of unrelenting torment while they awaited their final judgment. The heavy iron door slammed shut behind me, its dull thud echoing down the empty corridor like a death knell. Dark brown bloodstains marred the walls because no one bothered to clean them. The Alliance never wasted resources imprisoning ordinary people. Everyone here was either a member who betrayed their Famiglia or a Capo from an underground syndicate. I was the only one among them who had walked in here of her own accord.I was led into the deepest part of the restricted zone. More than a dozen pairs of eyes immediately turned toward me. In the corner, a woman whose face was covered in scars slowly rose to her feet. Her left hand was missing two fin
