Chapter 4

Penulis: Snail
When I first heard the news, I froze.

Kael was infertile, so whose cub was Arya carrying? Could it be a pregnancy she faked to escape being forced into mating?

Whatever the truth was, I was stunned by her boldness.

A month later, when she was due to give birth, the lions held a grand ceremony. All clan leaders were invited to witness the birth of an Aetherborn.

In the past life, I'd borne Kael a golden lion cub with Aetherblood. That must have convinced Arya she could do the same, so she'd been boasting of her Aetherborn from the moment she'd discovered her pregnancy.

The beastfolk hadn't seen such a rare bloodline in decades. So, when the day came, nearly all clan leaders gathered for the occasion.

As her sister, I was permitted into the birthing chamber to keep her company.

By the time I entered, the room was crowded with females, all fawning over her. Arya sat upright and basked in the praise with her chin held high.

When she saw me, she ran a hand across her round stomach and threw me a taunting look.

"Litha, it looks like I'll be the first to bring an Aetherborn into the world. That makes me the chieftess of the beastfolk!"

There was an old, unspoken rule among the beastfolk—for every human-beast matrimony, the bloodline status of the offspring often decided the political future of the clans.

The beastfolk who had offspring with stronger blood would be tied to the next chieftain. If the offspring shared the same bloodline, the matter was decided by whoever was born first.

Arya had conceived after me, but dragon pregnancies lasted far longer than other beastfolk's. So, it was no surprise that her cub was nearly born, while my belly had just begun to show.

No wonder she was so smug.

I gave her belly a calm, unreadable look and commented, "You might want to wait until the cub is born before you celebrate. Let's hope it doesn't disappoint you."

Her eyes widened and flashed with diffidence. "What do you mean by that? Do you know something?"

It was such a subtle probe, yet she rattled and had never been able to keep her cool.

After the brief panic, she soon calmed down and settled her hands on her belly with a snort. "I don't care what you know. As long as I give birth to an Aetherborn, Kael will take his rightful place as the chieftain."

Just after she spoke, a sharp grunt escaped her lips, and her brows knitted together.

The healers rushed in to check her and, finding the time had come, immediately cleared the room of visitors.

Outside the birthing chamber, Kael stood at the center of a crowd and was showered in praise. Everyone was eager to curry favor with him, which they believed would be the next chieftain.

"The lion clan is finally back on top. How many years has it been since we saw a rare bloodline?"

"Exactly! The lion clan will lead us to a golden age!"

Kael was glowing with pride. When he spotted me and Draken standing to the side, he made a point to walk over.

"Apologies, Lord Vorgath, but it looks like we'll be welcoming an heir before you get your turn."

His words sounded apologetic, but his eyes brimmed with smugness.

It was the first time the lions could hold their head high in front of the dragons.

"We might not be as wealthy as the dragons, but when it comes to choosing a wife, I clearly have better taste. You can't buy rare bloodlines with gold."

Others joined in and eagerly piped up.

"Too true! Lord Hawthorne clearly has the better eye! They're sisters but worlds apart; one's already giving birth, while the other's belly stays flat. Clearly, they're not from the same mother because some certain one is just useless."

I'd been pregnant for half a year, but Draken had kept it a secret, for fear I might be harmed. So, there had been no announcement of my pregnancy to outsiders.

Right then, cheers erupted from the birthing chamber.

"She's delivered! It's born!"

Everyone surged toward the doors, eager to catch the first glimpse of the Aetherborn. But seconds later, a stunned silence fell over the room.

"Wait… How did the wife of lion clan's head give birth to a cub with a fox tail?"

This time, I'll make sure I win over Draken!"With that, she jumped straight into the raging waters. When the news reached the dragon clan, I froze, and it took me a long time to snap out of it. And even then, all I could feel was a deep, unspeakable mix of emotions.Draken looked downright horrified. "Win me over? What kind of cursed fate is this to be stalked by a lunatic woman?"Miserab

My heart skipped a beat, and I quickly looked over at Draken.Dragons were known for their simplicity, unlike scheming and manipulative humans. I was genuinely afraid Arya's twisted words might plant a seed of doubt in him.But he remained unmoved and shot her a look of pure disgust. "If it'd been you set for the matrimony, I wouldn't have touched you ever."Arya stood frozen, as if his words had struck her like lightning."Why? What does she have that I lack? Why do you all keep doing this to me?"Her expression twisted into madness. Clearly, memories of her tragic past life triggered and drove her to insanity. But she never got the chance to touch me again. With a mere lift of his chin, Draken ordered her expelled from the dragonlands and declared severance of ties with the lion clan."The wife of the lion clan's head has committed the gravest of sins—an attempt to harm the dragon heir. From this day forth, the dragon clan severs all ties with the lions."Only then did everyo

After everything blew up, I never saw how the situation was dealt with because Draken had pulled me away long before it ended."Pregnant women need peace and quiet," he said, his usual cool tone tinged with rare grumbling. "All this nonsense is bad for the baby."Then, he settled me on his lap and buried his face into the crook of my neck before inhaling deeply. For a moment, his weight nearly knocked me over, and I instinctively threw my arms around his neck to steady myself."When is that brat finally coming out? Even the ones who conceived after you have already given birth!" he grumbled in a voice thick with grievance, nuzzling against me."Litha, I feel awful!" He squirmed restlessly, whimpering in soft waves of discomfort.Feeling the heat in my blood stir, I shoved at him annoyedly and snapped, "If you feel awful, just hold it in! The baby's barely full term yet, and we can't fool around!"He nodded sulkingly but looked up at me with wet, hopelessly persuasive eyes, and I

Arya kept insisting the cub was Kael's, but she never knew that the beastfolk had their own ways of verifying bloodlines that left no room for doubt.News of the lion clan's upcoming bloodline testing had somehow reached the ears of every beastfolk. Rumors of a newborn half-beast in the lion clan had stirred much curiosity. Now that there was a rare chance to witness the truth firsthand, no one would want to miss it.Three days later, the bloodline ascertainment ritual was held at the Grand Hall of Governance, presided over by the ruling Chieftain. Beastfolk from all corners flocked over to witness the ritual with their own eyes."Kael, you have to trust me. This cub is the lion clan's, and there's no need for the ritual!"Even at the last moment, Arya desperately tried to sway Kael. But he didn't even glance at her. He had never felt so humiliated. As he looked around at the crowd of beastfolk craning their necks to watch the spectacle, he wanted nothing more than to crush her

In the hierarchy of the beastfolk, only three clans reigned supreme, namely the dragons, lions, and wolves. The fox clan was the lowest of the low, and any half-beast born with a fox tail was considered of the weakest lineage.Suffocating silence fell over the birthing chamber as everyone exchanged glances. No one dared say a single word.Except for the lions, the other clans watched with excitement and amusement. They'd expected the lions to finally dominate the beastfolk for once, but now, the mighty lion clan leader had been cuckolded. The air buzzed with barely contained laughter as everyone looked forward to the unfolding drama.Kael's face was ashen as he emanated stormy rage. "Arya, who did you crawl into bed with? If you don't tell me the truth right now, I'll snap its neck myself!"Father broke out in cold sweat. As much as he was disappointed in Arya, she was still his favorite daughter. So, he braced himself to say, "Calm down, Kael. There might be a misunderstandi
