Chapter 3

Author: snow
I gave a self-deprecating smile, put away my phone, and went to get my medication before heading to the infusion room alone.

After the IV was finished, my head felt even more dizzy. I had barely taken a few steps when I nearly collapsed.

Vito still hadn’t come back.

Not a single phone call. Not even a message.

Not wanting to cause an unnecessary misunderstanding, I had no choice but to call him myself.

When Vito heard that I was still at the family clinic, he froze for a moment.

“I’m sorry, Sophia. I was planning to take Lucia home and come straight back for you, but her old injury flared up, so…”

Before he could finish, a waiter’s voice came through the phone.

“Sir, all the dishes you ordered have been served. Enjoy your meal!”

Although Vito quickly covered the receiver, I still heard every word.

“It’s fine. I can do this alone!”

I was saying it to myself, and to Vito as well.

Just as I was about to hang up, Vito suddenly called my name.

“Sophia, go home first. I’ll explain everything to you later.”

Explain what?

Nothing more than one lie after another to deceive me.

I said nothing and ended the call, then found a driver from one of the family’s outer circles to take me back to the estate.

But Vito didn’t come home that night.

The fireworks outside my window kept me from sleeping.

They were signal flares marking the family’s celebration of the signing of the ceasefire agreement.

With nothing else to do, I picked up my tablet and continued sketching a custom jewelry design for a client.

I accidentally touched the messaging app in the lower-right corner, and a post updated an hour ago appeared on the screen.

It was posted by Lucia.

A breathtaking view of countless shooting stars streaking across the night sky, accompanied by a sentimental caption.

【I’ve come such a long way. Thankfully, the stars were still there to light my way.】

I stared at it for a long time.

It wasn’t until I exited the post that I realized the messaging app logged into the tablet was actually Vito’s.

I had no interest in digging through their flirtatious conversations, so I simply logged out of the app on the tablet.

By sunrise, I was feeling much better, and I went to the jewelry design studio I ran with my partner as scheduled.

My partner held my resignation letter in her hand. When she learned that I was returning to Sicily to get married, she was genuinely happy for me, yet clearly saddened by my departure.

“Without you, we’re losing another valuable member of the team.”

I didn’t know what to say, so I simply hugged her and thanked her for all her help over the years.

After I finished the formalities, the rest of my colleagues also learned that I was leaving to return home and get married.

One after another, they demanded that I treat them to a farewell dinner.

Naturally, I didn’t refuse.

I immediately booked a table at the family-exclusive restaurant Vito and I often went to.

I didn’t know many restaurants, to begin with, and the food there really was excellent. The security was also tight enough.

In the middle of the meal, I went to the restroom.

To my surprise, I came face-to-face with Lucia again.

She smiled at me warmly.

“Sophia, I didn’t expect to see you here too! Come to think of it, this was actually the restaurant Vito brought me to back then. The food really is excellent. We’ve been here many times.”

I smiled at her and was about to leave.

I didn’t consider us close enough to make small talk.

But apparently, she didn’t feel the same way.

Just as I was about to walk away, she stopped me again.

“I noticed something last time. Whenever Vito orders food for you, he always avoids anything with peanut sauce. Are you allergic to peanuts too?”

The word “too” made me tilt my head slightly.

The truth was, I wasn’t allergic to peanuts at all.

Yet every time Vito ordered food for me, he would deliberately avoid anything containing peanut sauce.

He always said eating too much of it wasn’t good for my health.

I had always thought he was genuinely concerned about my health.

Now, it seemed that it was nothing more than a habit.

Because the person who was actually allergic to peanuts…

Was Lucia.

When I remained silent, she tilted her head slightly and studied my face carefully.

“Sophia, there’s something I’ve wanted to say since the first time we met. Don’t you think we look a lot alike?”

On the day Winston and I got married, Vito and Lucia showed up at the wedding. This time, they had been invited.Vito still had a cast on his leg, and Lucia was supporting him as he walked.Several family guards stood around them, making sure they couldn’t try anything.I looked at Winston in confusion, but he simply said, “It’s safer to keep them where we can see them. That way, they can’t cause any trouble.”My brother curled his lips. “That’s just your way of being devious.”When Winston and I exchanged rings, chaos broke out on Vito’s side.He shoved Lucia aside, and her forehead struck the corner of a table, drawing blood, yet he didn’t even spare her a glance. It was just like at Lucia’s welcome-back banquet, when he had moved too carelessly and splashed soup all over me, yet hadn’t even turned his head before chasing after her.Vito tried to rush over and shout something, but the family guards held him down firmly and covered his mouth. The booming wedding cannons and deafening

When I stepped outside, I saw Vito standing there in my favorite suit, holding a bouquet of flowers and smiling gently at me.“Sophia, I’ve thought things over. I was wrong about the way I treated you that day. I shouldn’t have laid a hand on you and hurt you like that.”“My feelings for Lucia really aren’t what you think. I only see her as a friend now. If you’re unhappy about it in the future, I won’t see her anymore.”I stared at Vito, unable to understand what he was trying to pull this time.Anyone with eyes could see how much he cared about Lucia. Now that the real deal was back, the substitute was supposed to step aside. Wouldn’t that have been a good thing for him?Why was he chasing me all the way to Sicily just to keep pestering me?When I remained silent, he pulled out a red velvet box and dropped to one knee in front of me.“Sophia, I know I’ve put you through a lot. Believe me, I’ll make it up to you from now on.”“Marry me. From now on, you’ll be the only woman by my side

On the way home, I asked my brother about Winston, curiosity getting the better of me.My brother sighed and told me everything, from beginning to end.It turned out that the old Don of the Greco family planned to hand full control of the family over to Winston after his arranged marriage. But Winston’s aunt by marriage was no pushover. She believed the family should be divided equally between her husband and Winston’s father. The problem was, those two men were each more useless than the other.Winston’s uncle in particular had previously been manipulated by a rival family and conned out of a considerable amount of money. If Winston hadn’t managed to turn the situation around, the Greco family might have lost half of everything because of him. With men like that, how could the old Don possibly feel comfortable entrusting the family’s legacy, built over generations, to them? When Winston’s aunt realized she couldn’t persuade the old Don, she could only turn her attention to Winston. To

The dinner was arranged at the family estate. That day, every family that had business dealings with my father was invited.I was dragged around to toast one family after another until my feet were aching, so I slipped into a guest room to rest. The moment I lay down on the bed, I heard a noise coming from the bathroom, startling me.“Who’s there?”I called out, but when I received no answer, curiosity got the better of me, and I cautiously approached the door. The moment the bathroom door opened, I was pulled inside. My gasp was caught in my throat as I stared at the man in front of me in horror.Soaking wet from head to toe, the man pinned me against the wall, his breathing hot and labored. It seemed to take him a great deal of effort to see me clearly. After a long moment, he called my name weakly.“Sophia Lucasi?”I blinked in response. He released me, only for his entire body to suddenly collapse against me.“How convenient. I’m your soon-to-be husband, Winston Greco. Could you do

The plane flew toward Sicily, with the bright sun shining overhead and an endless blue sky stretching beyond the window, a breathtaking sight.I watched the scenery outside with interest as it constantly changed.Sometimes, an endless sea of clouds rolled beneath us; other times, the sky glowed an eye-catching red.Suddenly, inspiration struck me, and I quickly grabbed some paper and a pen to sketch it down.By the time I finished the rough sketch, it was completely dark outside.I had flown from Chicago to Sicily. When we took off, it was the morning of the 27th.By the time we landed, it was already late at night. The moment I walked out of the airport, I saw my parents and eldest brother standing in a row, smiling and waving at me.Behind them stood a line of family guards, making the scene impossible to miss.I grabbed my suitcase and ran toward them, throwing myself into my mother’s arms and savoring the warmth I had missed for so long.Back then, because of the feelings in my hea

  • My Secret Mafia Lover Begged for Me Back   Chapter 5

After seven years together, I thought that no matter what happened, Vito should at least trust me as a person.I never expected that as long as Lucia was involved, even seven years meant nothing. One word from her was enough to condemn me, leaving me with no chance to defend myself. It was blatant favoritism, and unmistakable partiality. And in the end, I was nothing more than a substitute who had nothing of my own. There was no point arguing anymore.Ignoring Vito’s angry scolding behind me, I turned and walked away. With a clear handprint still visible on my cheek, I didn’t want to ruin my colleagues’ mood, so I didn’t return to the private room.Instead, I went to the front desk alone, paid the bill, and then messaged them to let them know I had to leave unexpectedly.“Something came up, so I had to leave early. Enjoy yourselves and have a good time. I’ve already taken care of the bill!”Dragging my exhausted body home, I looked around the place where I had lived for seven years mor
