Chapter 2

Author: Echo
Back at my desk, I scanned the office. Men in expensive suits walked the halls. Any one of them could be Lykos.

The only saving grace was that I'd never sent him a photo of my face. He wouldn't recognize me.

I opened our chat history again, combing through for anything I might have missed.

Finally, I found it. A conversation from last month.

He’d said he was shopping downtown and wanted to buy a pinky ring for an important pack ceremony. He’d asked me to help him pick one out. I chose a black obsidian and silver ring for him, and he bought it.

I stood up, pretending to walk to the break room, but really I was just pacing the hall, carefully checking the hands of every man who passed. Most wore gloves or no jewelry at all.

I came up empty.

Back at my desk, I hesitated, then decided to test him.

I sent Lykos a message:

"Honey, are you wearing the ring I picked out for you today?"

He replied instantly. "Of course."

"I wear it every day. Seeing it is like catching your scent."

Just then, the internal phone on my desk rang.

"Riley, my office. Now." It was my boss, Liam.

Liam Blackwood. A werewolf in his early thirties, the younger brother of our Alpha, Kaden Blackwood. His rank in the pack was high.

As I reached his office door, I heard his voice from inside. But it wasn't his usual cold, hard tone. It was so sweet it made my stomach turn.

"Baby, I miss you so much," he was saying into his phone. "Can you come by the office later?"

"I might have to work late tomorrow. The Alpha is coming back for an inspection… I need to be prepared…" Liam’s voice was full of respect and awe.

Alpha Kaden. The supreme leader of the entire Blackwood Pack. A man rumored to be cold and celibate.

"Okay, baby. See you in a bit." Liam hung up.

I knocked.

"Come in."

"Riley, sit." He pointed to the chair across from his desk. "I need you to prepare a report for tomorrow's meeting."

"Yes, sir," I nodded, trying to keep my voice professional.

Liam started explaining what he needed, but when he reached for his coffee mug, my eyes locked onto his right hand.

On his pinky finger was a black obsidian and silver ring.

It was identical to the one I’d chosen for Lykos.

My pen slipped from my fingers and clattered to the floor.

"What is it?" Liam looked up, his brow furrowed.

"N-nothing," I stammered, bending down to get the pen, my heart pounding against my ribs. "It just slipped."

"Your ring… it's really unique," I ventured, my voice shaking slightly.

Liam glanced down at it, a small smile playing on his lips. "Oh, this? You think so?"

I pressed on, needing to be sure. "When did you get it?"

He frowned, looking puzzled. "Last month."

"Yeah? You like it?"

I quickly pulled myself together and waved a hand dismissively.

"Oh, no reason. Just curious."

Then I practically fled his office.

Kaden's words hit me like a lightning bolt.I stared up at him, my voice trembling with shock. "You… you're Lykos?""Took you long enough, sweetheart," Kaden sneered. He pulled out his phone, opened a chat, and held it out to me. "Look."I took the phone with a shaking hand. It was my chat with Lykos. But now, a red warning was displayed across the top: You have been blocked by this user."No…" I whispered. "You can't be Lykos…""Why not?" Kaden's voice was tight with anger. "Because I'm one of those 'alphas with terrifying control issues' you hate so much?"Behind me, Liam was still stammering, but Kaden just waved a hand. Two guards entered and unceremoniously dragged Liam out. The study fell silent."When?" I asked, my voice strained. "When did you know it was me?"Kaden stepped closer, his long fingers gently brushing over my wrist. "The first time I saw you."I looked down at the little crescent moon tattoo."After all," he murmured, his thumb tracing the ink, "I've traced it with

I woke up the next morning with a splitting headache. I also noticed that the silver necklace my grandmother had left me was gone. I never took it off. Panicked, I searched everywhere.Thinking Kaden might have seen it, I rushed to his study. Just as I raised my hand to knock, I heard a familiar voice from inside."Alpha, I really don't know what to do!" It was Liam, and he sounded frantic. "Chloe was furious last night, all because I texted an 'ex-girlfriend' back!"My hand froze in mid-air."Then you should have controlled yourself," Kaden's voice was impatient."I swear it meant nothing!" Liam was practically crying. "But she doesn't believe me! She's threatening to call off the mating ceremony! Brother, what do I do?"My blood boiled. The hangover, the lost necklace, and now this—it all exploded. I shoved the study door open so hard it slammed against the wall."Liam!" I yelled, pointing at the pathetic man on the sofa, my voice shaking with rage. "You damn cheater!"Liam stared at

When I woke up the next morning, my memory of the night before was hazy. I touched my forehead. It must have been a dream.Downstairs, Kaden was eating breakfast, acting completely normal. That confirmed it. Why would the cold, arrogant Alpha sneak into my room to kiss me?But I didn't notice the deep, lingering glances Kaden kept sending my way. That evening, Kaden suddenly said, "You still seem troubled. Let me take you somewhere to clear your head.""That's not necessary, Alpha, I—""Come with me," he said, his tone leaving no room for refusal. He led me to the gardens behind the estate. Night had just fallen, and everything was quiet."The nights here are special," Kaden said, standing beside me.I didn't understand what he meant and just nodded politely. Kaden didn't look at his phone or say anything else."Just wait," he said, looking up at the sky. "It's almost time.""Time for what?" I asked. He didn't answer. He just snapped his fingers. The next second, the entire garden lit

After the rogues were dealt with, Kaden's face was still grim."It's not safe here," he ordered his guards. "Get a car ready. We're going to my estate.""Alpha, I can just stay at a hotel…" I tried to suggest."No," Kaden cut me off. "You will stay by my side until I can guarantee your safety."Twenty minutes later, our car pulled into a sprawling private estate. In the moonlight, the silhouette of the manor was both mysterious and luxurious. The main building was a five-story villa surrounded by manicured gardens and a lake."This is my private residence here," Kaden explained as he led me inside. "No one knows about it except for a few trusted members of my staff."He poured me a glass of red wine, and we sat in a spacious lounge overlooking the shimmering lake."Were you scared, what happened tonight?" Kaden’s voice was softer than usual. "Don't worry. I'll protect you."His words sent a warm feeling through me. But I quickly reminded myself to be rational. He was just doing his dut

After the gala, Kaden insisted on driving me home himself."I can get back on my own," I said politely."It's too late. It's not safe," he replied in a tone that left no room for argument.Sitting in Kaden’s luxury car, the air was filled with the faint scent of cedar. The soft interior lights cast shadows on his chiseled face, making him seem even more mysterious. The car moved smoothly through the night. Neither of us spoke."Riley," Kaden finally said, his voice especially deep in the enclosed space."Alpha?" I turned to him."If a werewolf was dumped by his mate," he began slowly, his gaze dark and fixed on me, "what should he do?"The question stunned me. The cold, ruthless Alpha was asking me for relationship advice?"You're the Alpha. You command the entire pack," I said, defaulting to flattery. "I can't imagine any she-wolf would be crazy enough to dump you."Kaden turned his head and looked at me, a meaningful smirk on his lips. "You'd be surprised."His gaze made me inexplica

Kaden’s brow furrowed when he saw me look at Liam. He didn't say anything else, just slowly pulled his gaze away.He sat back down on the sofa and began flipping through my report."This is an excellent report. Perfect."Liam’s face lit up. "Really? Brother!""It's the most detailed analysis I've seen," Kaden said, his voice calm, but the approval was clear. "Miss Riley's professionalism is impressive."A wave of relief and pride washed over me. Earning a compliment from the legendary Alpha was no small feat. The mood in the room lightened. Liam even got bold enough to joke, "This is the first time I've ever seen you be so pleasant to a she-wolf, brother. Usually, you look like you want to throw any she-wolf who gets near you out the door…"Kaden shot him an icy glare, and Liam immediately shut up.I glanced at Kaden, curious. So the Alpha hated she-wolves? Then why had he stood so close to me?"Riley," Kaden said, turning to me. "There's an important charity gala tonight. I require a
