Chapter 1

"What are you doing?"

My thumbs flew across the screen. I hit send.

I stared at the chat window, waiting for the man who called himself "Lykos" to reply. It was how I’d spent my nights for the past three months.

I’d stumbled upon his profile by chance. He’d posted a picture of his hand holding a pen, and that was it. But the hand he showed… the veins on the back of it, the long, powerful fingers… it was everything I was into.

I messaged him first, racking my brain every day for things to talk about.

It paid off. He went from cold and distant to white-hot. We were caught in a total whirlwind romance.

My phone buzzed.

He’d sent a photo. The side of a desk, a few files scattered next to a keyboard.

“Working. And waiting for my sweetheart to feel me thinking about her.”

A smile tugged at my lips. This man always knew the most direct way to make my heart hammer in my chest. Maybe we could finally break through the screen and touch for real.

But as I went to reply, my fingers froze.

In the bottom right corner of the photo, a silver sigil was peeking out from the edge of a folder. A lone wolf howling at the sky.

The sigil of the Blackwood Pack. The pack that owned the company I worked for.

My online boyfriend was a member of my own pack.

I stared, completely stunned, for a solid ten minutes. My mind was blank.

Honey, what exactly do you do?

Sweetheart, are you part of the Blackwood Pack?

I typed and deleted, over and over.

I had no idea how to ask. If I did, he’d ask where I was. He’d know I was on Blackwood territory, too. He’d come looking for me.

And I wasn't ready for that.

Noticing I hadn't replied instantly like I usually did, Lykos’s messages started flooding in.

"Baby, why no reply?"

"You busy? Send me a picture. Please? Like before. Your wrist, or… anything."

"Dreamt of you again last night. Your scent was everywhere, and you were wrapped around me, begging me to make you mine."

His words were getting bolder, more possessive. But this time, besides the heat in my cheeks, I felt a wave of panic. For three months, I thought I was talking to a werewolf miles away, so I felt safe saying all those dirty, exciting things.

Now I knew he was close. So close.

A hot blush of embarrassment crept up my neck.

Suddenly, my phone rang. A voice call.

I didn't dare answer, terrified he’d hear the tremor in my voice. I frantically declined the call.

Then I quickly typed back: "In a meeting, honey. I'll text you later."

He didn't seem to suspect anything. "Waiting for you," he sent back.

I closed the chat and took a deep breath. I needed to calm down.

First, I had to figure out who he was. If he was really from the Blackwood pack, what was his rank? A regular pack member, or a Beta like me?

Second, what was I going to do? Risk it and keep going, or end it now?

I opened our chat history, scrolling through, looking for clues. We’d both been careful about our privacy, never sharing personal details. But one thing stood out in my memory: a picture he’d sent of his bare torso.

Broad shoulders, a narrow waist, and perfectly defined abs. And just below his abs was a faint scar, like one from a blade. It was a sharp line, wild and powerful.

It was the only physical feature I had to go on.

But it wasn't like I could just start lifting up the shirts of every male werewolf in the office to check for scars, could I?

Kaden's words hit me like a lightning bolt.I stared up at him, my voice trembling with shock. "You… you're Lykos?""Took you long enough, sweetheart," Kaden sneered. He pulled out his phone, opened a chat, and held it out to me. "Look."I took the phone with a shaking hand. It was my chat with Lykos. But now, a red warning was displayed across the top: You have been blocked by this user."No…" I whispered. "You can't be Lykos…""Why not?" Kaden's voice was tight with anger. "Because I'm one of those 'alphas with terrifying control issues' you hate so much?"Behind me, Liam was still stammering, but Kaden just waved a hand. Two guards entered and unceremoniously dragged Liam out. The study fell silent."When?" I asked, my voice strained. "When did you know it was me?"Kaden stepped closer, his long fingers gently brushing over my wrist. "The first time I saw you."I looked down at the little crescent moon tattoo."After all," he murmured, his thumb tracing the ink, "I've traced it with

I woke up the next morning with a splitting headache. I also noticed that the silver necklace my grandmother had left me was gone. I never took it off. Panicked, I searched everywhere.Thinking Kaden might have seen it, I rushed to his study. Just as I raised my hand to knock, I heard a familiar voice from inside."Alpha, I really don't know what to do!" It was Liam, and he sounded frantic. "Chloe was furious last night, all because I texted an 'ex-girlfriend' back!"My hand froze in mid-air."Then you should have controlled yourself," Kaden's voice was impatient."I swear it meant nothing!" Liam was practically crying. "But she doesn't believe me! She's threatening to call off the mating ceremony! Brother, what do I do?"My blood boiled. The hangover, the lost necklace, and now this—it all exploded. I shoved the study door open so hard it slammed against the wall."Liam!" I yelled, pointing at the pathetic man on the sofa, my voice shaking with rage. "You damn cheater!"Liam stared at

When I woke up the next morning, my memory of the night before was hazy. I touched my forehead. It must have been a dream.Downstairs, Kaden was eating breakfast, acting completely normal. That confirmed it. Why would the cold, arrogant Alpha sneak into my room to kiss me?But I didn't notice the deep, lingering glances Kaden kept sending my way. That evening, Kaden suddenly said, "You still seem troubled. Let me take you somewhere to clear your head.""That's not necessary, Alpha, I—""Come with me," he said, his tone leaving no room for refusal. He led me to the gardens behind the estate. Night had just fallen, and everything was quiet."The nights here are special," Kaden said, standing beside me.I didn't understand what he meant and just nodded politely. Kaden didn't look at his phone or say anything else."Just wait," he said, looking up at the sky. "It's almost time.""Time for what?" I asked. He didn't answer. He just snapped his fingers. The next second, the entire garden lit

After the rogues were dealt with, Kaden's face was still grim."It's not safe here," he ordered his guards. "Get a car ready. We're going to my estate.""Alpha, I can just stay at a hotel…" I tried to suggest."No," Kaden cut me off. "You will stay by my side until I can guarantee your safety."Twenty minutes later, our car pulled into a sprawling private estate. In the moonlight, the silhouette of the manor was both mysterious and luxurious. The main building was a five-story villa surrounded by manicured gardens and a lake."This is my private residence here," Kaden explained as he led me inside. "No one knows about it except for a few trusted members of my staff."He poured me a glass of red wine, and we sat in a spacious lounge overlooking the shimmering lake."Were you scared, what happened tonight?" Kaden’s voice was softer than usual. "Don't worry. I'll protect you."His words sent a warm feeling through me. But I quickly reminded myself to be rational. He was just doing his dut

After the gala, Kaden insisted on driving me home himself."I can get back on my own," I said politely."It's too late. It's not safe," he replied in a tone that left no room for argument.Sitting in Kaden’s luxury car, the air was filled with the faint scent of cedar. The soft interior lights cast shadows on his chiseled face, making him seem even more mysterious. The car moved smoothly through the night. Neither of us spoke."Riley," Kaden finally said, his voice especially deep in the enclosed space."Alpha?" I turned to him."If a werewolf was dumped by his mate," he began slowly, his gaze dark and fixed on me, "what should he do?"The question stunned me. The cold, ruthless Alpha was asking me for relationship advice?"You're the Alpha. You command the entire pack," I said, defaulting to flattery. "I can't imagine any she-wolf would be crazy enough to dump you."Kaden turned his head and looked at me, a meaningful smirk on his lips. "You'd be surprised."His gaze made me inexplica

Kaden’s brow furrowed when he saw me look at Liam. He didn't say anything else, just slowly pulled his gaze away.He sat back down on the sofa and began flipping through my report."This is an excellent report. Perfect."Liam’s face lit up. "Really? Brother!""It's the most detailed analysis I've seen," Kaden said, his voice calm, but the approval was clear. "Miss Riley's professionalism is impressive."A wave of relief and pride washed over me. Earning a compliment from the legendary Alpha was no small feat. The mood in the room lightened. Liam even got bold enough to joke, "This is the first time I've ever seen you be so pleasant to a she-wolf, brother. Usually, you look like you want to throw any she-wolf who gets near you out the door…"Kaden shot him an icy glare, and Liam immediately shut up.I glanced at Kaden, curious. So the Alpha hated she-wolves? Then why had he stood so close to me?"Riley," Kaden said, turning to me. "There's an important charity gala tonight. I require a
