Chapter 1

Author: Shelley
I am a succubus, and during my heat cycle, I must have sex with a partner to survive.

After rescuing a serpentfolk man, a species renowned in the beast-kin world for possessing the most potent sexual prowess of all, I used the favor to make him help me through my heat.

And just as I was clinging to him again, begging him to take care of my needs, a stream of scrolling comments flashed before my eyes:

[The villainess doesn't even realize she's been hate-sexed this whole time! The male lead despises her for defiling his body!]

[The heroine was THIS close to meeting the male lead first! It's all the villainess's fault for intercepting him!]

[Every single time they do it, the male lead is actually thinking about the heroine! Thank god the villainess is about to be written off!]

[Once the male lead recovers his memories, the first person he'll punish is the villainess — he'll throw her into a pit of beastfolk during her heat...]

So I was nothing but the villainess in some novel.

My hand, which had been sliding downward, froze.

I looked at Jace, his eyes glazed and half-lidded, and quickly pulled his pants back up.

"Um... I think we should practice some restraint."

Jace's breathing was ragged. He looked at me.

"Selene, what are you up to now?"

The corners of his eyes were flushed, and when his Adam's apple bobbed, I could see the fine beads of sweat clinging to it.

I swallowed hard, dragging my gaze away from the open collar of his shirt.

"I think... we should practice some restraint."

Jace narrowed his eyes.

Those serpentine pupils contracted in the dim light — dangerous and magnetic.

"Restraint?"

"Who was it that wanted it three times a day?"

Me: ...

God, why did he have to remember that?

I pushed him away, burrowed into the blankets, and replayed what the comments had said.

I'd always known Jace felt nothing for me.

That day, during my heat, I'd found him on the road — injured. I brought him home and used the opportunity to get through my heat.

As it turned out, he'd lost his memory. So I told him I was his human wife.

He clearly didn't buy it, but every time my heat came around, he'd dutifully "help me out."

I thought we were both enjoying ourselves. After all, maybe we'd develop real feelings if we kept at it long enough.

But the comments were right. There was no "maybe."

After Jace recovered his memories, not only did he not fall for me — he despised me.

He even threw me into a pit of beastfolk during my heat.

Though the signs had always been there.

Every time my heat hit, I was the one forcing him.

Making him wear the clothes I liked. Making him use the positions I preferred.

Every single time, he'd lie there with a furrowed brow and let me have my way.

Deep down, he'd never wanted any of it.

The more I thought about it, the angrier I got.

That ungrateful snake — I was going to divorce him!

One week later, Jace and I were standing in front of the Civil Affairs Bureau again. The fox clerk was slouched behind the counter scrolling her phone. She looked up at the sound of footsteps, saw us, and her eyes went saucer-wide.Her phone clattered onto the counter. "You two?!"She click-clacked over in her heels and circled us twice, making disapproving sounds the whole way."One week! You divorced one week ago! And now you're back to remarry?!""What do you think this is? A seven-day return policy? A wholesale outlet?"I laughed sheepishly. "This time it's for real. Really remarrying."The fox rolled her eyes. "That's what you said last time about the divorce."Jace spoke calmly. "This time it's real."She looked at him, looked at me, and finally let her gaze drop to our interlocked fingers."Fine, fine. Hang on, I'll get wolfie."She spun and sprinted toward Window Three, shouting as she went: "Wolfie! Wolfie! That Huge Size couple is back!"My face went up in flames.Jace didn't

After that, his excuses to see me multiplied. The first time, it was food.He said he'd been passing by on his way to work and grabbed some fruit. He left the bag at my door and turned to leave.I opened the bag. Everything inside was something I loved. Strawberries, cherries, mangosteens. The second time, it was a repair. He must have noticed during his last visit that my pipes leaked, making a faint dripping sound. It was barely noticeable, but somehow he'd caught it.His visits grew more frequent.Once a week became every three days, then nearly every day.Every time, he had a reason.I went from saying "thanks" to asking if he wanted to stay for dinner. He always said no.But the next day, he'd be back.I couldn't figure him out. What did he want?Didn't the comments say he'd recovered his memories? Wasn't he supposed to hate me? Throw me into a pit of beastfolk? So why did he keep showing up at my door? Then came that day.I was at the mall, shopping. I'd just stepped off the esca

The Civil Affairs Bureau was packed that day.Jace and I sat in the waiting area with an empty seat between us. Neither of us spoke. The fox clerk popped up from behind the counter. When she spotted us, her eyes went wide."You two again?"She click-clacked over in her heels, two forms in hand. "For real this time?"I nodded. She looked at me, then at Jace, then back at me. She made a drawn-out "tsk.""Last time you said he had a huge one. Even a huge one can't save this?"I didn't dare open my mouth. Jace's face visibly darkened. The fox slapped the forms down in front of us. "Fill 'em out, fill 'em out. Window Three when you're done."I lowered my head and started writing.Name, ID number, date of marriage, reason for divorce...When I reached "Reason for Divorce," my pen hovered. The fox leaned over to peek. "Hey, you need to be specific here. It's for the records."I thought for a moment, then wrote three words: Irreconcilable differences. The fox read it aloud: "Irreconcilable dif

That afternoon, when Jace left, I followed him.The taxi stopped in front of a hotel.I sat inside the car, peering through the window. The lobby was busy — men and women in expensive clothes milling about.A woman walked beside Jace.White dress, long hair, petite. She looked like a little bird next to him.She tilted her face up to talk to him, eyes curving when she smiled. He inclined his head to listen. I couldn't read his expression from here. They crossed the lobby and headed toward the elevators.[The male lead and the heroine are going to a room!][I've savored this part of the original ten times over! The smut is CHEF'S KISS!][Everyone thinks the serpent husband is cold, but honestly — if you ran into this model in real life, who WOULDN'T want a taste?]I read the comments and stumbled, bumping into a solid back."Selene?"I looked up.Silver-gray hair, pale amber eyes, pointed ears lined with scale patterns.Luca.He could tell my mood was off. He took me for a drive. He bro

The bathroom was empty except for me.The cold counter dug into my thighs. I curled up and pressed my face into my knees. He'd really left.I bit my lip and told myself this was fine.He was going to leave eventually. Sooner or later — what was the difference? But my eyes burned anyway.I don't know how long I sat there before the bathroom door swung open.I snapped my head up.Jace stood in the doorway. He'd changed.Black silk shirt, collar open, revealing sculpted collarbones. Sleeves cuffed at the forearms, veins faintly raised. The shirt was tucked loosely into his suit trousers, tracing a narrow waistline. And the key detail —He was holding a bag.A black, opaque bag, bulging with something. He set the bag on the counter. Whatever was inside clinked and rustled."Jace?"He didn't speak. He just opened the bag and began pulling things out, one by one.I stared. The first thing he produced was a box — transparent. Inside was...Something I'd secretly bought last month. When he fou

Several seconds of dead silence.Mr. Johnson let out a laugh. "My, my, Selene... switching things up?""Mr. Johnson, let's not jump to conclusions."Someone tried to smooth things over. "She's just out having fun, right?"I opened my mouth. Not a single word came out.Jace still hadn't spoken. His gaze was locked on Luca.Luca shrank under the stare, whispering to me: "Who is that? His eyes are terrifying..."Before I could answer, Jace walked over. His shoes struck the floor, unhurried, measured. My heart clenched with every step.He stopped in front of me and looked down."Had enough fun?"Jace pulled me out of the bar.I stumbled a few steps and glanced back.Luca watched me go, all puppy eyes, mouthing "bye bye" at me.Before I could respond, Jace shoved me into the car.The door slammed shut. The silence inside was suffocating.I stole a look at him.He sat in the driver's seat, not starting the engine. Instead, he loosened his tie.I swallowed.I'd told Jace before that my favori
