On the other end of the surveillance video, there was a momentary silence. A second later, shrill laughter reached my ears.

"Dr. Sonnet, didn't you say Henry Jenner is completely obedient when it comes to you? If you ask me, he seems rather cocky, no?"

"Maybe you should submit to him. Then we can send people in to untie him right now. What do you say?"

Samantha Sonnet curled her fingers into fists as her jaw tightened. Ignoring the others' mockery, she leaned close to the microphone and spoke to me.

"Submit to him? Henry, have you ever looked in the mirror? You live off my money, yet you think I should submit to you? You? Know your place! I allowed your surgical atlas to be published simply because I thought you could do it! What makes you think you have any right to negotiate with me?"

Countless cameras dotted the operating theater, their feed connected to a massive screen that gave everyone a 360-degree view of me.

"Oh my god! They're a hate-driven couple? How interesting!"

"Let me get this straight. The husband felt his knowledge was tainted because someone else touched it, and the wife decided to make him undergo an organ transplant because of that, right?"

"That's right. Look at him acting all high and mighty. As if anything in this world is truly clean!"

"In reply to the poster above me, you're nothing but trash! Just because you're impure, you think everything else is tainted too, huh?"

Comments from people watching the live stream scrolled relentlessly across the screen.

At that moment, the "surgeon" in charge of the operation finished preparing and approached me, wearing protective goggles. As he pressed the scalpel against my skin, the cold sensation made me shiver.

My heart throbbed in pain, and I thought I was suffocating.

Just because I refused to pave the way for the new intern, she was doing this to me.

Back then, it was Samantha who suggested I publish a surgical atlas. Because of that, I spent countless sleepless nights working on it, hoping it would stabilize her standing in the medical field while also making a name for myself.

I never would've expected that all my hard work would end up helping someone else gild themselves.

When Samantha noticed my terrified expression, she mocked me.

"Henry, don't tell me you genuinely think I'm doing this only because you refused to credit Nicholas in the surgical atlas?

"I'll be honest with you. If it weren't for your greedy ambitions leading you to get close to me, would you really have the status and achievements you do today?

"Just because Nicholas wanted to be credited in the book, you burned the draft. Isn't it all because you feared he would surpass you? As long as you hand over the backup copy, I'll let you go immediately!"

Her words left me thoroughly dumbfounded.

So, that was how she had always thought of me?

Even more comments sped across the live stream screen.

"No way! Do all people who live off others do it so publicly nowadays?"

"I heard Nicholas' career was almost ruined because of this incident. Looks like Henry is just reaping what he sowed."

"I agree. It's just crediting an extra person. Is there really a need to be so petty?"

Similarly, mocking or envious comments continued to pour in from the dark web.

Just then, Nicholas Spark's voice drifted over the speakers.

"Samantha, it's only natural that Henry doesn't think too highly of me. He's always had a discerning eye and is able to see your strengths."

The aggrieved tone in which he spoke those self-deprecating words instantly had Samantha jumping to his defense.

"Nicholas, you came from an impoverished background, yet you put in so much effort and worked hard to make it in the world. Unlike some despicable people, who think they're all that but actually ride on others' coattails to throw their weight around."

He worked hard? Did she mean the way he was always thinking of new ways to please her?

More than once, Samantha had praised Nicholas for being capable straight to my face.

However, when I showed her the mistakes Nicholas had made in his diagnostic plan, she flipped and berated me harshly.

"Henry Jenner, not only are you a lousy employee, but your attitude is truly horrible, especially your jealousy!"

She refused to even look at the obvious mistakes I had pointed out.

Every time Nicholas came to our house, the two of them would hole up in the study for hours.

Samantha was well aware that I was incredibly bothered by this. I had told her many times that I hated it when Nicholas came to our home. Whatever business they had to discuss, they could've done it in her office at the hospital. Why did they have to bring it into our house?

Nonetheless, Samantha never once took my words to heart, even increasing the frequency of these meetings to spite me.

Ever since Nicholas intruded into the study, I never stepped foot in there again.

Back in the present, as I lay on the icy surgical table, I faced one of the cameras and said, "Samantha Sonnet, you're utterly filthy. In fact, you had been tainted long ago. I hate dirty things, so I'm divorcing you!"

The netizens on the dark web seemed to think things weren't serious enough and gleefully added fuel to the fire.

"Dr. Sonnet, this man is scorning you for being impure and even had the audacity to bring up divorce!"

My revenge was only just beginning, yet this war had already reached international levels.Noting the icy glint in my eyes, Xander urged in a low voice, "Don't lose sight of our original mission."I paused briefly in surprise but didn't answer.Perhaps the Henry Jenner who believed everyone was inherently kind had died the moment he heard them discussing the price of his organs while he lay on that surgical table.…As the rain pounded against the bulletproof glass, I sat before the console in the command center of Interpol's Alluria branch, studying the asset freeze order for one of the many implicated companies. A stream of data nearby showed that law enforcement from 17 countries had already taken similar action.Occasionally, some would attempt to claim innocence, only for new evidence to quickly disprove them.At that moment, Xander entered with a newly decrypted intelligence document."Sonnet Hospital's cross-border capital chain has been thoroughly severed. My gaze landed on Xander, and my tense expression eased slightly."Other than you and Captain Hardy, I don't trust anyone right now."Xander dipped his head in acknowledgment, eyeing me with a complex expression. "Understood. The medical team is waiting next door. They insist on performing one last full-body checkup."After a thorough examination, the medical team arrived at the same conclusion as before. My wounds were mostly superficial with a minor risk of infection; beyond that, I was experiencing extreme physical fatigue. However, my psychological analysis indicated that I was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, which would require professional intervention. The doctors prescribed antibiotics and sedatives, stressing that I needed adequate rest.I agreed, but the moment they left, I headed straight for the temporary command center.Xander and I stood before a massive display screen as he informed me of the new arrangements for the press conference."This is the

My low curse wasn't aimed at Nicholas, but at my own past wishful thinking.Back then, I had clearly realized there was something seriously wrong with the medical data, yet I hadn't probed further when Samantha breezily claimed that was simply "how the industry worked". Looking back, I understood she hadn't been adhering to any industry rules; she had already been deep in the thick of a criminal enterprise. Xander showed me another encrypted file. It was a report on the funds transfer between Sonnet Hospital and several overseas shell companies. The red warning highlights were particularly jarring against the white background. On the surface, it appeared Sonnet Hospital was collaborating with these medical firms. In truth, this was simply Nicholas' way of establishing a channel for the organ trafficking organization to launder money. Not only were there no legal profits, but there were also massive unexplained debts. The ironic thing was that Samantha believed she was finally ga

Xander held me steady, his body warmth seeping through his uniform to chase away the bone-chilling cold of the surgical table.I had been undercover for five years, pretending to be a normal employee by Samantha's side while I discreetly investigated things. However, what I received in return wasn't the truth, but a ruthless betrayal.I looked up at the screen showing Samantha's face—now twisted in utter despair—and spoke slowly. "Samantha Sonnet, the divorce agreement will be delivered to your office tomorrow. You'll be leaving with nothing but the clothes on your back!"The bulletproof metal of the black armored car did an excellent job of cutting off the scent of blood emanating from the factory. Nonetheless, I could still feel the bone-deep chill of the surgical table and the restraints tying me down. I could still remember the despair I felt while the rabid dogs barked and snarled around me. Most of all, I could never forget the icy cold that spread through my body when I w

My head snapped up as I looked toward the door.Standing against the backlight was Xander Lindt's tall, broad figure. Smoke was still trailing from the muzzle of the gun in his hands. He was the head of the Special Operations Division, my grandfather's most trusted aide, and my cousin. I honestly hadn't expected him to appear here."C-Captain Lindt?" Samantha's voice shook with fear and disbelief. "W-What are you…"Xander ignored her completely. His gaze swept over me, taking in how I was barely presentable due to the blood and dust clinging to my body, before shifting to the dead dogs surrounding me. Flames of fury ignited in his eyes.He strode forward briskly, easily stepping over the fallen metal door without hesitating to tread on the filthy floor. He took off his jacket and offered it to me. "Everything's okay now, Henry."I stared at his outstretched hand and the clean jacket, then looked down at my filthy body. Drool from the rabid dogs still clung to me in places.Seein

Nicholas' voice came over the speakers, tinged with a hint of exaggerated fear, though there was no hiding the excitement in his tone."Samantha, don't you think that's a little too much? After all, Henry—"Scoffing, Samantha raised a hand and interrupted him. "He certainly didn't think it was too much when he edited your diagnostic plan and ruined your future, nor did he care when your family was in dire straits. Release them!"Her last two words were barked straight into the microphone as an order.Immediately, a rusted metal door at the side of the operating room was opened electronically, the gears screeching with friction. Not one, but many dark blurs shot out of the darkness, growling and barking madly. The dogs' eyes were completely bloodshot, and viscous drool hung from their jaws. They seemed entirely out of their minds as they charged at the only target in the room—me!The live stream chat went into an uproar."Oh fuck! Those are dogs!""There's something off about th
