Chapter 1

Author: Cheerful Sunlight
My father had a car accident while on his way to pick me up. The news hit me like a ton of bricks, bringing back memories of how my mother had died during childbirth, which led my father to blame me for her death. After I turned five, he sent me away to live with my grandfather in a small town, and we had not seen each other since.

I stood there with my luggage, suddenly remembering last night's dream. While it seemed absurd, I could not shake off the suffocating scenes from my dream and my tragic end. A chill ran down my spine.

After a while, I called Xavier Kingston, and he showed up at the airport shortly after. He asked, "Home or straight to campus?"

Xavier was my arranged fiance and the only person who had stood by me in my dream. Even though he was a minor character in the story, he was brilliant and had excellent grades.

He could have inherited everything from the Kingston family and had a bright future ahead. Instead, in my dream, he took the blame when I hurt Rosie Cantrell, going to jail and missing his college entrance exam.

He was still locked away when I died.

Looking at him now, I felt a lump in my throat and my eyes stinging. I replied, "Let's go to the hospital."

"Are you feeling sick?" Xavier asked, concerned. He did not know about my father's accident yet.

Meanwhile, my guilt for him only deepened. I shook my head and said earnestly, "Xavier, I need your help to figure something out."

When he gave me a puzzled look, I managed a smile. "I want to attend Luivelle University."

He was obviously caught off guard by my words, but he chuckled and said, "That's easy. Let's do it together."

We got in the car and arrived at the hospital shortly after. Taking a deep breath, I followed my memory to the hospital room.

Inside, Rosie was crying while my father lovingly wiped away her tears. My older brothers, Seth and Shawn Cantrell, were comforting her while watching over our father.

It was a perfect family moment, but it was hard to watch. I could not help but feel bitter anger boiling inside me.

As if sensing my presence, my father looked up, and our eyes met. He hesitated before finally speaking.

"Stella?" He sounded unsure, almost as if he barely recognized me. Then again, it was unsurprising since he had not visited me once these years.

Shawn suddenly spat, "You're nothing but bad luck! Wasn't killing Mom enough? Are you here to kill Dad too?"

His words made everyone's expressions darken. They all blamed me for Mom's death, but was it really my fault?

I let out a bitter laugh as tears threatened to fall. It was exactly like my dream—I had my answer.

When Xavier tried to defend me, I held him back, shaking my head.

Just then, Rosie stepped forward, frowning. "Shawn, how could you say that to Stella? Apologize to her right now!"

She was playing the perfect little angel.

Shawn glared at me but did not say more, while Seth merely glanced at me once before remaining silent.

I smiled sarcastically at Rosie. "And who might you be? Did Mom have another daughter I didn't know about?"

My father's face paled as he explained, "Rosie is my adopted daughter—"

"How kind of you, Mr. Cantrell," I cut him off.

The formal address seemed to hurt him. He said uncomfortably, "Stella, I'm your father."

I let out a dry laugh. "A father who abandoned his own daughter to raise someone else's."

I could not help but think things would have been easier for everyone if I had died. After all, when the roles were reversed, they accused me of ruining Rosie's life.I looked at Mike with tear-filled eyes and a bitter smile. "Am I really your daughter? I know why you don't love me, but remember, Mike—you chose to have me with Mom."If anyone was responsible for her death, it wasn't me—it was you! For 18 years, I never knew what it meant to have a father. What right do you have to blame me?"Mike stood frozen, unable to speak. "Stella—" he started, but I cut him off."I'll help Rosie if you give me all your shares in Cantrell Corporation. Think about it and let me know."He looked like he had been punched in the gut. When he finally left, it was like he was sleepwalking.Shawn glanced at me but did not say anything. After a moment, he turned and followed Mike out of the room.I turned to Seth, who lingered. "Why are you still here? Get out." He flinched, his eyes growing red.

That was just perfect. Everyone was looking at me with admiration, their eyes practically sparkling with respect."Of course, she got a perfect math score. She won first place in the national math competition," Xavier remarked, chuckling. The moment he said that, people started recalling Shawn's earlier accusations. One by one, they all turned to look at him. Shawn's face turned bright red as he ran away, with Rosie following close behind. The school released the full video of me taking the test to clear my name. If not for the 30-minute minimum rule, I could have finished 15 minutes earlier. While my reputation was restored, Rosie's took a hit. The school discovered she had started the cheating rumors, earning her academic probation.Even Shawn ended up apologizing to me. However, his relationship with Rosie seemed even more strained after everything. Not that I cared. After all, my only focus was on the upcoming college entrance exam. Before I knew it, finals were over, a

Rosie froze, her face twisting slightly. Then, she caught my gaze and quickly sent Shawn away before turning back to me. She threatened, "Stella, I'll make your life miserable.""Oh," I replied, unfazed by her warning. The next day, I finished the final exam early as usual. When the scores were posted, I had secured first place, as expected. It seemed that all those hours of practice and revision had paid off.Meanwhile, Xavier came in second, just three points behind me."That's impossible!" I heard Rosie's voice behind me. She dropped from her usual second place to ninth. Her pale face betrayed her disbelief. She clenched her fists and mumbled, "There must be a mistake."However, she did not mean her own score; she meant my success was the mistake. Soon, I found myself in the middle of a controversy, with rumors spreading like wildfire."How could she finish early and get first place on such a difficult test? It doesn't make sense!" "Rosie said she's from a small town. Schoo

It was Rosie's voice, instructing Nicole to strip me and film it so she could blackmail me if I ever 'bullied' her in the future. The recording made everyone's faces grow even grimmer."Rosie, how could you?" Shawn stared at her in disbelief.I laughed bitterly at Shawn's act. "Why are you acting surprised? Weren't you the one who had people burn me with soup in the cafeteria yesterday and slap me in the bathroom?" Seth's eyes widened in shock. "So, yesterday's injuries... were your doing?"I produced the surveillance footage. Even though it was incomplete, it would be enough for a thorough investigation. After that, Xavier and I left the office, followed by Rosie's sobs about how she only acted out of fear—afraid she would lose her dad and brothers to me.By the afternoon, disciplinary actions were announced. Nicole and her gang were expelled for repeated bullying, while Shawn and Rosie, thanks to their Cantrell name, received major demerits. If the demerits were not cleared by

In a split second, Rosie's expression changed. She blocked our path with a concerned look and asked, "Stella, what happened? Were you bullied? Shawn and I will take you to the nurse's office!"When she tried to pull Xavier's jacket off me, Xavier coldly pushed her away. "Get lost," he said icily, which was shocking since he was usually quiet but polite.Rosie's face went pale, and tears immediately welled up in her eyes. Her wounded expression triggered Shawn's protective instincts, and he shielded her while barking, "Rosie, ignore her! They only bully her because she deserves it for all the awful things she's done!"I slapped Shawn across the face. I had wanted to do it since the day we first met. The slap echoed in the air, and everyone around froze in shock. My hand was still trembling, and my palm stinging from the impact, but I stared at him with tear-filled eyes. He met my gaze, stunned and speechless.I asked, "What exactly did I do wrong, Shawn? Did I beg to be born into t

"How dare you glare at me!" The girl shouted angrily, swinging her hand at my face. When I dodged, she grew angrier and ordered the others to hold me still. Then, she struck me repeatedly across the face. "You're nothing but bad luck! Remember this—next time you mess with Rosie, I'll end you!"From outside, I heard Shawn's voice. "She deserves it. Don't feel sorry for her." Xavier found me later on the rooftop, tending to my wounds. His eyes blazed red with fury, ready for a fight. He demanded, "Who did this?" I tried to smile, but the slight movements on my face pulled at the bruises. The pain made my head spin, and I could only manage a weak smile."Xavier, can you help me with the medicine?"He took the first aid supplies silently and gently applied the medication."Does it hurt?" A tear fell from his face onto mine, feeling ice-cold in the breeze. "It won't happen again," I promised. The story had already gone off the rails from my dream, but one thing was sure—I w
