Chapter 4

Author: Heliotrope
Bianca’s smile stiffened for an instant, as though she wanted to ask what else I had planned, but I had already turned away.

By early afternoon the next day, Bianca was waiting in the drawing room in a pale suit and diamond earrings. Carlo paced beside her, rehearsing the story she would tell Dante.

My bedroom door had been locked from the outside, with two guards stationed in the hall. It was exactly the same as in my first life.

With less than ten minutes before Dante was due to arrive, I climbed from my balcony onto the adjoining terrace, crossed the rear courtyard, and entered the drawing room while Bianca was fixing her hair in the mirror.

“How did you get out?”

“It doesn’t matter. Dante is coming here to see me. You’re already too late.”

“You didn’t save him. What will you do when he asks what happened that night?”

“I have his crest and Father’s word. What do you have?”

She called the guards and ordered them to take me back to my room. Two men seized my arms. I managed to wrench one hand free, but Bianca stepped forward and slapped me across the face.

“You still think being the eldest Bellini daughter makes you important?” She watched blood gather at the corner of my mouth. “Father only needs you for that marriage deal. Your mother cannot even decide when she leaves her own room. What can either of you use to fight me?”

“Stop!”

My mother, Sofia, hurried down the hall, pushed Bianca aside, and placed herself between us.

“Carlo told you to guard Elena. Who gave you permission to hurt her?”

Teresa entered behind her and caught Sofia’s arm.

“Sofia, the girls were only arguing. Why involve yourself?”

“She hit my daughter, and you call that an argument?”

At a gesture from Bianca, several guards closed around my mother and pinned her arms behind her back. I tried to reach her, but another man held me in place.

Bianca walked up to my mother and slapped her before saying, “Once the Romano family recognizes me as Dante’s rescuer, whether either of you still has a place in this house will depend on me.”

“Bianca!” I fought against the guard holding me. “If I get in front of Dante, I’ll expose you.”

“With what?” Bianca asked. “There won’t be any evidence left of the medicine or the spare key.”

“Dante will ask how you pulled him from the river.”

“I’ll tell him the current carried him into the shallows. I only had to wade in a few steps, grab his coat, and drag him onto the bank.” Bianca calmly straightened her sleeve. “He was disoriented and never saw the face of the woman who saved him.”

Outside, tires rolled over gravel. Bianca didn’t seem to hear them.

“So rescuing him was easy?” I asked.

“Of course.” Bianca lifted her chin. “Once he thanks me publicly, the truth won’t matter anymore.”

She motioned for the guards to take my mother and me away.

“Even if Dante Romano himself came through that door today, no one could protect you.”

A low male voice answered from behind her.

“What about me?”

Dante stood in the doorway.

Three months after I moved into the Romano estate, Dante announced our engagement before New York’s most powerful families. The celebration filled the estate ballroom. When Dante placed the ring on my finger, everyone understood that I would become his wife and stand beside him in all matters concerning the Romano family. My mother sat in the front row wearing a pale lavender dress Dante had chosen for her. She cried before the ceremony was even over. By the time Dante led me from the ballroom, her carefully applied makeup had blurred, yet she was smiling more freely than I had ever seen.He had also arranged a townhouse for her less than ten minutes from the estate. She received private security clearance and could visit whenever she called ahead.“You’ll always be able to see Elena,” Dante told her.My mother squeezed my hand. “That’s all I need.”That evening, Dante came to my sitting room.“I want an honest answer,” he said. “You were trained to swim. Why did you pretend to struggl

Dante slipped the obsidian crest inside his coat and turned toward Carlo.“You arranged an attack on the Romano Don, stole my private crest, and tried to use my life as leverage for an alliance. Any one of those crimes is enough to cost you everything.”He signaled to his security chief.“As of today, Carlo is no longer head of the Bellini family. His businesses, accounts, and family authority are frozen until the other families decide their final disposition.”“The recordings and Caruso’s confession will reach every family in New York tonight. Anyone who shelters you will be declaring themselves an enemy of the Romanos.”His gaze moved from Carlo to Bianca.“You will leave New York tonight under guard and be taken to a Romano estate in Sicily. Neither of you will ever return without my permission.”He looked at Bianca’s mother.“You helped imprison Elena and allowed your guards to attack Sofia. You have lost the Bellini family’s protection. You will leave with them.”Carlo sank to the

The drawing room fell completely silent. Bianca’s triumphant expression vanished, and Carlo’s face turned pale. Even the Bellini guards by the wall stopped moving.Dante narrowed his eyes at me. “What did you just say?”“You didn’t fall into the Hudson by accident. Someone pushed you from the speedboat.”His fingers tightened around the crest. “Continue.”“I saw a lighted speedboat offshore. A man approached you from behind and kicked a coil of rope near your feet. When you stepped back and lost your balance, he reached out and shoved you overboard.”“Who was he?”“I couldn’t see his face from the riverbank. After pushing you into the water, he didn’t flee immediately. He returned to the controls and headed downstream. On the stern was a silver anchor with a red letter C.”Carlo flinched. Dante immediately turned toward him.“Do you know Ciro Caruso from the West Side marina?”“No,” Carlo stammered. “I’ve never heard of him.”Dante raised one hand. His security chief stepped forward an

“Even if you were the one who saved him, so what?”Bianca’s voice rang through the drawing room, and Carlo immediately seized the opening.“Don Romano, Elena received professional swimming training from childhood and competed for her school for years. Everyone in the Bellini family knows that she is a far stronger swimmer than most people.”He looked directly at me. “Yet she just claimed that she swallowed several mouthfuls of water, lost feeling in her arms and legs, and was nearly dragged under by the current. That story is impossible. She described herself as someone who could barely survive the rescue.”Encouraged by his support, Bianca began speaking faster.“Think carefully. If Elena is such a strong swimmer, why did she struggle so badly while saving you? Why would someone with years of training look as helpless as the man she was pulling from the river?”She raised one finger.“The first possibility is that she was never at the river. She overheard Father and me discussing what

Dante stood in the drawing room doorway, dressed in a black overcoat, with four armed guards behind him. Carlo followed half a step behind, the color drained from his face. The Bellini guards holding my mother and me reacted as though they had been burned. They released us at once and retreated toward the wall.Dante walked several steps into the room, his gaze settling on Bianca.“Now that I’m here, do you still think no one can protect her?”Bianca was the first to recover. “Don Romano, I had no choice but to stop Elena,” she said, her voice catching. “She kept insisting that she was the woman who saved you and tried to force her way outside to claim the credit. I reasoned with her, but she refused to listen. I was afraid she would lie to you and offend the Romano family, so I ordered the guards to restrain her.”Dante gave her no answer. He turned toward me instead.“Is that true?”I raised my head and met his eyes. “No. I was the one who pulled you from the Hudson that night.”His
