Chapter 1

Author: Serene Peace
I'd barely gotten Sophie Shaw into a different cab and sent her off by another route when a tremendous crash sounded behind me.

Bang!

I whirled around.

There had still been an accident at the entrance to the same side road where Sophie had died in my previous life. Even more unsettling, the car involved looked almost identical to the one she'd been riding in.

The violent collision had kicked up a thick cloud of dust. As it slowly settled, the wreckage came into view.

Just like last time, a minivan had slammed into the side of a sedan, crushing a huge section of the car inward. There was hardly anyone around on this quiet little road.

Then I saw the driver of the minivan.

Yale Morgan.

My cousin looked startled when he spotted me, but the surprise in his eyes vanished almost immediately, replaced by unmistakable defiance.

Through the damaged sedan, I caught a glimpse of a girl inside, covered in blood and barely recognizable. For one horrible second, all I could see was Sophie from my previous life.

I rushed to Yale's minivan and yanked hard on the door handle, but it was locked.

"Yale Morgan, do you realize you just deliberately killed someone? Get out of the car! Go see who you hit!"

He sat there staring at me without the slightest trace of fear or guilt. Instead of getting out, he reclined his seat and settled back comfortably, watching me rage outside his window as though none of this concerned him.

I lost my temper and kicked the door as hard as I could.

"Yale Morgan, I'm giving you three seconds. Unlock this door and get the hell out!"

He barely reacted, his voice dripping with provocation.

"What am I supposed to do out there? She's obviously dead. I already called the police. They'll come deal with it."

Then he added, "My mom said the van has full coverage anyway. The insurance company can pay."

My eyes burned with fury.

It had been exactly the same in my previous life.

They had deliberately run Sophie down, yet in the end, they'd simply let the insurance company pay compensation and acted as though that settled everything. No one in their family had even bothered to apologize.

Something in me snapped.

I grabbed a large rock from the roadside, ready to smash his window and teach him a lesson, but before I could swing it, Mom and Laura Morgan came running over and grabbed me.

Mom's eyes were red.

"Nora Shaw, don't you dare break that window! Yale is the only male heir in the Morgan family. What if you hurt him?"

I stared at her, furious.

It was always like this.

Mom had been born a Morgan, and ever since Sophie and I were children, she'd taught us that we were expected to give way to everyone in the Morgan family, no matter what.

"Mom! A life has been lost! He killed her, and you're still protecting him?"

Laura immediately came to his defense.

"Yes, he hit someone, Nora, but Yale only got his license recently. He's probably terrified too. Don't blame him."

Then she continued as if what she was saying were perfectly reasonable.

"Your sister's dead. What's done is done. You still have yourself, don't you? From now on, you'll be an only child. All your parents' love and attention will be yours."

I stared at her in disbelief.

A few seconds passed before it finally clicked.

They thought the girl who had died was Sophie.

Except I'd just put Sophie in a different cab and sent her away.

So who was the girl lying dead inside that car?

By the time Megan finished telling us what life with the Morgans had become, tears were streaming down her face."Please," she begged. "They don't even treat me like a person. They used to talk about how we're all family, but the second I ran out of money, they started hitting me every day. I'm treated worse than a stray in that house."She looked from Michael to Sophie and me."I finally understand now. You were the only ones who ever truly cared about me. You're my real family. Please let me come back. I swear I'll never hurt any of you again. I'll be the mother I should've been."For years, Sophie and I had told ourselves that Mom behaved the way she did because Evelyn had raised her to put the Morgan family first. Whenever we were mistreated at Grandma Morgan's house, or whenever we had a conflict with Rachel or Yale, we were always expected to be the ones who gave in.Now there was no denying the truth.Mom had never really thought of us as her family. Even after marrying Dad and

Dad wasted no time ending the marriage. Mom tried to hold the divorce hostage by demanding the house, apparently convinced he'd never agree to give it up. He did without a second thought. Getting away from her mattered more.Once the divorce papers were signed, Dad took Sophie and me to live with Grandma Shaw, and we severed all contact with Mom.Sophie's required health screening came back clean, which left only the background investigation for her civil service appointment. After the scene Mom had caused in front of the whole neighborhood, every neighbor the investigators spoke to went out of their way to defend Sophie."We've watched Sophie grow up. She's always been a good, respectful kid.""Her mother has treated her terribly for years and lies about her all the time, so please don't believe anything that woman tells you.""That poor girl got stuck with a mother like that, but she's always worked hard and made something of herself. She'll do a good job."Thanks to them, the backgr

The police took Yale and Laura into custody, and Michael brought Sophie and me home. Megan tried to follow us, but none of us wanted her there.Once we were alone, Sophie finally told me what had happened. It turned out Sophie had been reborn too, and she'd woken up a day before I had.In her previous life, she'd seen Yale driving the van that killed her. Once she remembered that Rachel had finished second on the written exam, the rest wasn't hard to piece together. The Morgans had wanted Sophie out of the way so Rachel could take the position. That was why Sophie had called Dad the day before and insisted he come home. That morning, Sophie quietly switched assigned cars with Rachel. What she hadn't known was that the Morgans had deliberately kept Rachel in the dark about the plan, afraid the pressure would throw her off before the interview. So Rachel had gotten into Sophie's car willingly without realizing it was the one Yale intended to hit. That was how their own scheme ended up ki

The entire family stared at Sophie as if they'd seen a ghost. The girl they were so sure was dead was standing right in front of them, alive and well.Laura's face drained of color. "Y-You... how are you still alive? Weren't you dead?"Sophie gave her a mocking smile. "Who said I was dead? I just got back from my interview."Laura's eyes widened. "Then... who was in that car?"I hurried over to Dad and Sophie. Before I could say anything, Sophie put on an innocent look."You mean the car you arranged for me? I switched cars with Rachel this morning."My head snapped toward her. That had never happened in my previous life.Could Sophie have come back too?As if she'd read my mind, she caught my eye and winked.Suddenly, everything made sense. No wonder the wrecked car had been the one assigned to Sophie. She had been reborn too.Laura's legs gave out beneath her."No... That's impossible. How could it be Rachel?"I gave her a cold smile. "Why don't you make a call and find out? They pro

Mom finally opened the trunk and pulled me out, though she made no effort to untie me."Rachel's celebration dinner is later," she said impatiently. "You're staying here. Behave yourself and don't even think about going anywhere."I looked at her without a trace of warmth. "And you think any of that matters more than someone's life?"Laura gave a derisive laugh. "Rachel just landed a coveted civil service job. Of course it matters."Grandma was even more smug. "Some people are just born with miserable lives. Rachel is the one who's going places. You'd better watch yourself, because once she moves up in government, you'll regret getting on her bad side. The Morgans finally have someone in government. Let's see who still dares look down on us after this."I couldn't help laughing."You really think getting a civil service job makes her some kind of big shot? After everything you've done, Rachel will be lucky to keep the job even if she gets it."That set Yale off."You bitch! Your own si

The moment they saw me heading for the wreck, they panicked. Mom hurried after me and tried to stop me.I ignored them and reached for the door handle, but Mom rushed forward and pinned my hand beneath hers."Nora, stop this. Your sister's gone. If you have to blame something, blame her bad luck."Come home with me. From now on, everything in the house will be yours. No one will be there to compete with you anymore. Sophie's already gone, so just let her rest."She looked at me almost pleadingly, as if I were a child throwing an unreasonable tantrum. But I refused to let this go.Even if the girl inside wasn't Sophie, she had still been a living, breathing person. I couldn't stand by and let her die without anyone even bothering to find out the truth.I stubbornly pulled the door open. The gruesome sight inside hit me all over again. One glance was enough to bring back the memory of Sophie dying in my arms in my previous life with such force that it nearly overwhelmed me.I forced myse
