Chapter 3

Author: Cyan A.
I did not leave for the press conference right away. I left my phone on the table, and it continued vibrating as I stared at the cold chicken noodle soup, feeling nauseous.

It had been years since I escaped. I had a job and a place to stay, and I had finally worked up the courage to buy myself a cup of milk tea as a treat. I always thought that they could not do anything to me as long as I did not look back.

However, my phone started vibrating wildly. Unknown numbers kept calling me, and texts from new numbers filled the screen.

[How can a failed sample get revenge against her parents?]

[Is it true that you have a tendency to retaliate against society?]

[You're an egoist who ruined 26 years of your parents' hard work!]

[People like you should be destroyed!]

My fingers froze, unable to decline any of the calls or texts. I knocked the chicken soup over by accident. I forgot to dodge the spill, and it scattered all over the ground, wetting my feet. I looked down at the mess.

A representative from my company’s HR department called, sounding polite, "Candice Sullivan, the company has just caught attention of your current situation. The internet is filled with speculations of your mental condition, familial ethics, and career stability."

I replied, "They aren't true."

She paused before continuing, "Some netizens are saying that you’re prone to retaliate against society. This company isn't willing to take risks with their employees."

My knuckles turned pale from gripping the phone. "Are you trying to tell me that I'm fired?"

There was silence for several seconds. "We're suggesting a friendly negotiation between both parties."

After hanging up, I received an email informing me that I had been let go. I sat by the side of the bed with my burnt feet and started to heave. Even my school alumni chat group started to become active with texts. None of the alumni remembered me, but now, everyone started recognizing me.

[Is she really from our school? How embarrassing.]

Someone started a poll.

[Should we uninvite Candice Sullivan to reunions and all alumni activities?]

The last option in the poll read: [I don't know her, but it's still embarrassing to be associated with her.]

I felt nauseous reading the texts, and I ran to the bathroom again to throw up. However, it was only dry heaving, and nothing came out. All I felt was acidic liquid rushing up my throat, and I started tearing up from the pain.

My phone on the table outside started to ring again and again. My shoulders shuddered, and I accidentally knocked the back of my hand against the sink, hurting my fingers so badly that they started to go numb. I did not dare to leave my bathroom, afraid of whatever cursing was waiting for me on the other end of the phone.

The ringing finally stopped, but started again in less than two seconds.

I leaned against the wall for support as I walked out, and next to the bed, my phone screen lit up. The call was from Tina Camden. The tension in my back relaxed the moment I saw her name. I crouched to pick up my phone, though it took me several tries to answer due to my trembling hands.

Tina had seen me return home from work late at night, crouching in the corridor to have my cold supper. She had seen me working hard on my proposal with a high fever, until it got so bad that I could hardly hold the mouse.

"Don't read any of those comments, Candice," Tina said in a slightly trembling voice. "Don't pick up calls from unknown numbers either. Let me know where you are. I'm coming over right now."

I wanted to tell Tina that I was fine, but could not say the words. I could hear her sniffle. "How could they do something like this? I've seen the way you've struggled over the past few years. You're not a failed experiment. You're a human being."

A human being.

My knees went weak, and I only stopped myself from falling by leaning against the bed. My parents had never called me a human being before. I was only known as the regular twin, 'Sample A', or 'Low Intervention Sample'.

I clicked on the trending post, which read, ‘The risk assessment of the regular group was put together with the assistance of the elite twin, Chloe Sullivan.’

It chilled me to read it. Even my current pathetic situation had been reported on by them for their research. I stared at the screen and suddenly laughed. My throat was still hurting, making my laugh sound hoarse and terrible.

My efforts to live a normal life and go to work like a regular person were seen as attempts to destroy their experiment. The more I wanted to live a normal life, the harder they tried to prove that I was not fit to be a human being.

I wiped away the water at the corner of my lips and went into my room to change. My feet still felt sticky from the spilled soup as I clutched my phone.

It was not enough that they had stepped on me like dirt. I had to go to that press conference to find out what more they wanted from me.

When the police arrived at the venue, the sun was almost up. I sat on the bench in the corridor of the police station, hugging my grandmother's wooden box. I was already wearing the silver bracelet. It felt cool and heavy on my wrist. Every time I looked down at it, I could feel my grandmother by my side, gently holding my hand.My parents were seated on the other side. My mother had been crying so hard the entire night that her eyes were swollen and she could hardly open them. My father's suit was crumpled, and his hair was a mess. His tie was loose, and he no longer looked anything like the expert who talked about 'changing one's destiny with education' on stage. When he saw me, my father said, "We did bring you up, after all, Candice."The cool feeling of the silver bracelet on my wrist kept my mind awake. "Grandma brought me up too."My father's face fell. Many things happened quickly after that. Their ‘Educators of the Year’ award was revoked, and their publications were take

The press conference was forced to stop, and my parents were escorted away to safety by the staff. My mother was still crying as she kept calling out my name, as if she finally remembered that she had another daughter. "I was wrong, Candice! Please don't let them investigate us."It felt like my feet were made of lead as I hugged the wooden box. Cameras were pointed at me, and everyone started asking me questions. Would I sue my parents? Would I accept Chloe's compensation? What did I think about the second stage of the experiment that would be conducted on my parents?Every question was like a sharp needle that poked at me until I went numb. Tina pushed the crowd away to run toward me and shield me behind her. "Stop pointing your cameras at her! Her face is still wounded!" She held my wrist, which warmed my heart. It was only then that I realized that my hands were trembling, causing the silver bracelet in the wooden box to rattle gently inside. Chloe stood not far away, but sh

My mother lunged at Chloe, almost clawing her sleeve. "Your grandmother left that for the family! What right do you have to take it out?"Her words nauseated me. Family? My mother still thought that the family could use what my grandmother left for me to keep me under control.Chloe evaded her and said in a calm voice. "Grandma's last will and testament clearly states that Candice Sullivan should inherit the bracelet."A picture of an old wooden box, red cloth, silver bracelet, and my grandmother's handwritten letter appeared on the screen. I started to tear up when I recognized her. When I was young, my grandmother was always worried that I was hungry, so she would always hide hard-boiled eggs in the pockets of her cotton jacket and secretly give them to me. The eggs felt warm in my palm, but I would never eat them right away. I would hold them in my hands until the eggshells were covered with my sweat. When my mother discovered what she did, she would berate her for influencin

Everyone was waiting for my answer. My palms were sweating, and they throbbed with pain. I did not want to watch it. It was me at 18, and it was humiliating. It had been a horrible experience, and the memory of that living room only gave me chills. However, I nodded in the end. My voice was as rough as sandpaper. "Play it."The screen lit up, and I saw myself sitting at a table when I was 18 with an admissions letter in my hand. I was extremely thin then, and my school uniform sleeves were too short, revealing my thin wrists. My father pushed a document toward me. "Sign this, and we'll pay for your university."I lowered my head to look at the document header. 'Agreement to collect growth data.'I had to agree to let my parents use all of my recordings, medical records, academic results, and lifestyle records from childhood to adulthood for educational research, publications, talks, and courses. I shook my head. "This is my privacy."My mother smiled. "Your privacy? We gave yo

My mother was still screaming as my father tried to block the screen. "This isn't true!" His voice was breaking, but he still tried to maintain the dignity of a professor. "Candice, how can you fake a video and edit it so maliciously by manipulating your grandmother just to get revenge on us?"I felt nauseous and wanted to throw up on them. I could taste the blood and bile in my mouth, but I could not say a word. Chloe spoke on my behalf. "The original video file was taken from your old video camera. The timestamp, numbering, and file saving path are all recorded."She clicked onto the next page, and the screen was filled with folders. [Sample A: Fussing and crying][Sample A: High fever][Sample A: Grandmother's disruption][Sample A: Social adaptation risk]Someone below the stage cursed in a low voice. I stared at those folders, feeling a chill run down my spine. These were all terms that I had seen before. When I was 15, I was lying in my room with a fever. My throat fel

After my mother stopped screaming, the hall was left with only the sound of the microphone's static. I stood below the stage as my ears buzzed from the slap I just received, but I could still hear every word of Chloe's. The estranged parent group had been given basic survival requirements. My father was the first to react. He rushed up to Chloe and lowered his voice, "What are you doing? We nurtured and groomed you. How can you act crazy just like her?"Chloe lowered her eyes to look at him. "I'm not acting crazy." She pointed at the cameras below the stage. "This press conference is still being streamed."My father turned pale, and my mother's lips trembled. "Can't you tell that this is all to anger her?"Chloe nodded. "Every verbal promise has been recorded in the experiment as a behavior sample."Everyone below the stage took a sharp breath. My chest still felt tight, but my fingers started to clench. When I was young, my parents used to describe my crying as an emotional re
