Chapter 2

Author: eggy
By the time I got back to the pack, warriors from another pack were stationed outside Gray Wolf pack house.

The moon hall was bustling. Lise's mate, Cecil, was visiting.

The table was covered with wild fruit, and my father had even brought out the fine tableware he saved for noble guests.

They always welcomed Cecil warmly. It wasn't that they feared his pack. They just wanted him and Lise to grow closer.

As for my mate, they knew his name was Campbell. That was all.

I'd once suggested inviting Campbell to dinner at Gray Wolf pack house, but my father refused.

"Not just anyone can come into Gray Wolf pack house. As long as you're happy with your mate, that's enough."

But Campbell was the Alpha of the Radiant Moon pack.

They didn't care about me, much less who my mate was.

Even Cecil quickly looked away when he saw me, as if I were invisible.

Outsiders could see exactly where I stood in the Gray Wolf pack, so they felt free to ignore me.

As soon as Lise saw me come in, she called out, "Elaine, you're finally back. Father and Mother want to talk to you."

I'd already turned to leave, but I stopped.

My father cleared his throat and drained his cup. "You're back. Good. While Cecil's here, let's get everything settled.

"Your mother and I have set aside the northern lands and a troop of wolf riders as Lise's joining gift."

Lise stared for a moment, then squealed and threw herself into my father's arms.

"Father, Mother, you're too good to me!"

My father lifted his chin, looking pleased, and turned to Cecil. "With this, Lise has the Gray Wolf pack behind her. If anyone in the Silver Moon pack mistreats her, I'll make them pay!"

Cecil said quickly, "I'll take good care of Lise. I'll never let her down."

My mother took Lise's hand, then turned to me. "Elaine, what's your gift for Lise?"

Every eye turned to me. I looked around at them all. "I was going to ask you the same thing. What's your gift for me?"

My mother clearly hadn't expected that. She opened her mouth but said nothing.

My father gave a little cough and turned to me. "Elaine, you and Lise are twins. The Radiant Moon pack will treat you well after your bonding. There's no need to fight Lise over these things.

"Besides, you're more capable. If you want something, you can work for it yourself."

So just because I could fend for myself, I got nothing.

I didn't say a word, and my mother grew impatient. "Cecil is still here. Don't embarrass the Gray Wolf pack. Surely you can come up with a set of jewelry."

She stepped forward and held out her hand to me. I looked down at it and said slowly, "And if I said I didn't have any?"

My mother probably never expected me to refuse her in front of an outsider. Her face darkened on the spot. She shoved my shoulder and raised her voice. "Then don't expect us to come to your bonding ceremony!

"You'll have no pack and no standing. Let's see whether the Radiant Moon pack accepts you then!"

Those words sent a chill through me.

I suddenly remembered the secret Campbell had shared with me the night before. To welcome me, his mother had decorated Radiant Moon pack house inside and out. She'd even taken lessons from the pack's cooks so she could cook for me herself.

I'd been happy for hours that night. So this was what it felt like to be loved.

My mother snapped, "What are you standing there for, you idiot? Are you giving it to her or not?"

I nodded. "Fine. She can have it."

If a set of jewelry was the price of severing ties with them, I'd pay it.

The next winter, I was pregnant with our pup.Campbell had a tent set up for me on the grassland. "Now you can lie in the sun without the wind getting to you. "From now on, I'll always be here with you and the pup."After my father left that day, a lot happened in the Gray Wolf pack.My mother would sit deep in the forest for whole days, staring into space. She told everyone not to come looking for her. She just wanted to be alone.Lise couldn't stand life in the Silver Moon pack and kept running back to the Gray Wolf pack.My father wrote me many letters. He said my mother spent all day in my room, thinking about how she'd neglected me. After the bonding ceremony, I officially became the Luna of the Radiant Moon pack. I kept busy running the pack every day, and little by little, I earned the wolves' acceptance on my own merits.I won first place in the spring hunt, and Nessa looked at me in awe. "Elaine, you're amazing!"I was taken aback. I hadn't competed in the spring hunt for years. My mother had been afraid I'd steal Lise's thunder, so she'd barred me from entering. But now someone was looking up to me and praising me for winning. The feast that night was supposed to be in the forest, but Campbell told me his mother had already prepared everything at Radiant Moon pack house. "You don't have to put up with things like you used to. If there's something or somewhere you don't like, just say no."I'd only been with the Radiant Moon pack for a few days, but I could feel how deeply they loved me.Every morning, Campbell's mother brought me warm milk and reminded me to be careful when I went hunting, not to wander off,

The day I left the Gray Wolf pack, I followed Campbell toward the Radiant Moon pack. We reached another stretch of grassland at sunset.Campbell's mother had been waiting for us at the edge of their lands since early that day. When she saw us, she howled a welcome to the sky. "My dear Elaine, you're finally here."As soon as we met, she pressed the gemstone that symbolized the Radiant Moon pack into my hand. "From now on, this is your home. Settle in and make yourself comfortable."Campbell's little sister, Nessa, ran up to me. "Are you our pack's Luna?"I thought she might be wary of me, but she just leaned in and gave me a friendly sniff. "Welcome. We're so happy you're here!"Campbell's mother took my hand and led me inside. "You must be starving. Campbell told me about your favorite foods. Come in and have some flatbread to tide you over. The feast comes after the bonding ceremony!"A lump rose in my throat. So this was what it felt like to have someone care about me and think of m

After Lise's bonding ceremony was over, she went to find my father. "Father, I want to invite friends from the other packs to Gray Wolf pack house for dinner tonight."My father looked at her, irritated. "Lise, Elaine is missing. Maybe another day..."Lise simply hooked her arm through his and turned on the charm. "You know how Elaine is. She's probably hiding somewhere, waiting for you to come get her like before. Father, I only get one bonding ceremony, and I'm leaving the Gray Wolf pack soon. Please say yes."My father didn't answer. For the first time, he felt that Lise was asking too much.As soon as my mother came in that evening, she grabbed a passing warrior. "Well? Any news of Elaine?"The warrior shook his head. My mother walked into my room, crestfallen, and found it strangely bare. It looked nothing like Lise's room. She opened my jewelry box. Inside were a few cheap necklaces she'd once handed me without a second thought, laid out neatly. There was nothing else.My mother

That night, Lise found my room empty and went straight to our parents. "Elaine hasn't been back. The bonding ceremony is tomorrow."My father was working on plans for the territory. He frowned at the sound of my name, then gave a scornful laugh. "She just wants us to come looking for her, doesn't she?"Leave her alone. You think she'll skip her own bonding tomorrow? She'll come slinking back before the ceremony."Standing beside him, my mother sighed impatiently. "The ceremony is tomorrow. What kind of tantrum is she throwing?"The next day, I was still nowhere to be found in the Gray Wolf pack, and my mother finally began to worry. "Still no news? Does she even remember what day it is? Is everyone supposed to wait for her?"My father shook his head. "I've already sent people to search the grassland and the forest. They'll tell us as soon as they find anything."Lise tugged on my mother's arm and wheedled, "Mother, if we don't leave now, I'm going to miss my own ceremony."That snapped
