Chapter 3

Author: eggy
Two days before the bonding ceremony, my mother suddenly asked to meet Campbell.

Even though I'd made up my mind to leave, part of me couldn't help hoping I might finally win her approval.

I passed the news to Campbell and asked him to set out early. Then I rushed around the pack and had all my mother's favorite dishes ready by dawn.

But I waited from morning until noon, and my parents never showed up.

Without their permission, Campbell couldn't enter Gray Wolf pack house. The warriors kept him outside, and all he could do was wait.

I didn't dare rush my parents. I was afraid I'd upset them and lose the rare bit of attention they were giving me.

But Campbell was still standing outside under the blazing sun.

I gritted my teeth and sent my mother a message asking where they were, but I never got an answer.

I ran over to Campbell and made excuses for my parents. "Maybe they went hunting. They'll probably be back soon."

Campbell could see how anxious I was. He smoothed my ruffled fur and said softly, "It's all right, darling. Let's wait a little longer."

Dusk fell, and the pack lit its first bonfire of the evening. Still, my parents didn't come.

It wasn't until the sun had set that my mother finally texted me, "Elaine, something urgent came up for your father and me today. We'll meet him another day."

Then Lise sent me a photo with the message, "Father and Mother gave me the most magnificent crown for my bonding ceremony."

In the photo, the three of them were beaming, and the crown on Lise's head glittered in the moonlight.

So my mother's urgent matter had been helping Lise pick out jewelry.

I should have seen the truth long ago. And yet, like an idiot, I'd still hoped for even a scrap of my mother's love.

I felt like a joke.

My nails dug deep into my palms, and the pain cleared my head. I gave Campbell an apologetic smile. "I'm so sorry. I don't think we're getting in tonight."

Campbell pulled me into his arms. "Darling, they've treated you so unfairly. Leave the Gray Wolf pack. The Radiant Moon pack is where you belong."

I nodded. "Okay. I'll go with you."

When I got back late that night, the lights in the moon hall were still on.

The center of the hall was piled high with chests full of things Lise would take with her after her bonding.

There were cloaks, weapons of every kind, and heaps of jewelry. My mother had even packed furs for the dead of winter.

"Lise, if you have trouble settling in at the Silver Moon pack, send word. We'll have everything ready for you."

Then she looked over at me with distaste. "Your bonding is coming up. Why haven't you started getting ready?

"If you embarrass us, don't you dare tell anyone you're a daughter of the Gray Wolf pack!"

I swallowed and forced my voice to stay steady. "Campbell and I waited outside Gray Wolf pack house for you until the sun went down."

My mother's face darkened. "I told you something important came up. I run every part of this pack, day in and day out, and now I have to stand here and take this from you?"

I almost laughed. "Buying Lise a crown counts as something important?"

My father let out a furious roar, and the warriors on guard outside came running with their spears raised, ready to fight.

"You idiot, you'd disrespect your mother over that bastard? Is he dying? Couldn't he wait one more day?

"Your mother is the Luna of the Gray Wolf pack. She's worn herself out over your bonding ceremonies. Today she went to more than a dozen packs to get gifts for you two."

I couldn't believe my father hated me so much that he'd curse my mate.

Lise said softly, "It's my fault. I shouldn't have asked Mother to go jewelry shopping with me today."

One apology from Lise, and my parents rushed to her defense. "You did nothing wrong. A bonding is a big deal, and of course we had to go with you.

"As for you, Elaine, get back to your room!"

Before, I would have tried desperately to explain and begged their forgiveness.

But I was tired, and I wasn't going to be that foolish again.

When I got back to my room, I found a dagger lying on the bed.

It was crudely made. It couldn't even cut through a porcupine's hide.

That was the gift my mother had gotten me. Other than that, there was nothing.

I laughed bitterly. My heart had grown numb to them long ago.

"From now on, I'll always be here with you and the pup."After my father left that day, a lot happened in the Gray Wolf pack.My mother would sit deep in the forest for whole days, staring into space. After the bonding ceremony, I officially became the Luna of the Radiant Moon pack. I kept busy running the pack every day, and little by little, I earned the wolves' acceptance on my own merits.I won first place in the spring hunt, and Nessa looked at me in awe. "Elaine, you're amazing!"I was taken aback. I hadn't competed in the spring hunt for years. My mother had been afraid I'd steal Lise's thunder, so she'd barred me from entering. But now someone was looking up to me and praising me for winning. The feast that night was supposed to be in the forest, but Campbell told me his mother had already prepared everything at Radiant Moon pack house. "You don't have to put up with things like you used to. If there's something or somewhere you don't like, just say no."I'd only been with the Radiant Moon pack for a few days, but I could feel how deeply they loved me.Every morning, Campbell's mother brought me warm milk and reminded me to be careful when I went hunting, not to wander off,

The day I left the Gray Wolf pack, I followed Campbell toward the Radiant Moon pack. We reached another stretch of grassland at sunset.Campbell's mother had been waiting for us at the edge of their lands since early that day. When she saw us, she howled a welcome to the sky. "My dear Elaine, you're finally here."As soon as we met, she pressed the gemstone that symbolized the Radiant Moon pack into my hand. "From now on, this is your home. Settle in and make yourself comfortable."Campbell's little sister, Nessa, ran up to me. "Are you our pack's Luna?"I thought she might be wary of me, but she just leaned in and gave me a friendly sniff. "Welcome. We're so happy you're here!"Campbell's mother took my hand and led me inside. "You must be starving. Campbell told me about your favorite foods. Come in and have some flatbread to tide you over. The feast comes after the bonding ceremony!"A lump rose in my throat. So this was what it felt like to have someone care about me and think of m

After Lise's bonding ceremony was over, she went to find my father. "Father, I want to invite friends from the other packs to Gray Wolf pack house for dinner tonight."My father looked at her, irritated. "Lise, Elaine is missing. Maybe another day..."Lise simply hooked her arm through his and turned on the charm. "You know how Elaine is. She's probably hiding somewhere, waiting for you to come get her like before. Father, I only get one bonding ceremony, and I'm leaving the Gray Wolf pack soon. Please say yes."My father didn't answer. For the first time, he felt that Lise was asking too much.As soon as my mother came in that evening, she grabbed a passing warrior. "Well? Any news of Elaine?"The warrior shook his head. My mother walked into my room, crestfallen, and found it strangely bare. It looked nothing like Lise's room. She opened my jewelry box. Inside were a few cheap necklaces she'd once handed me without a second thought, laid out neatly. There was nothing else.My mother

That night, Lise found my room empty and went straight to our parents. "Elaine hasn't been back. The bonding ceremony is tomorrow."My father was working on plans for the territory. He frowned at the sound of my name, then gave a scornful laugh. "She just wants us to come looking for her, doesn't she?"Leave her alone. You think she'll skip her own bonding tomorrow? She'll come slinking back before the ceremony."Standing beside him, my mother sighed impatiently. "The ceremony is tomorrow. What kind of tantrum is she throwing?"The next day, I was still nowhere to be found in the Gray Wolf pack, and my mother finally began to worry. "Still no news? Does she even remember what day it is? Is everyone supposed to wait for her?"My father shook his head. "I've already sent people to search the grassland and the forest. They'll tell us as soon as they find anything."Lise tugged on my mother's arm and wheedled, "Mother, if we don't leave now, I'm going to miss my own ceremony."That snapped
