Chapter 2

Author: Madam Fenghuo
The first image was the day Mia and I were rescued.

We'd been dumped in the corner of an abandoned factory.

That day, Mia was covered head to toe in burns and barely alive.

My arm had been scorched in the same fire, the scars still there to this day.

When our parents found us, I was lying on the ground, holding Mia, sobbing so hard I couldn't breathe.

Everyone grabbed me and kept asking what the kidnapper looked like, where he'd gone. Then Mia woke. The first word out of her mouth was "sister."

Then she was gone. When they asked me what the kidnapper looked like, I shook my head and said I hadn't seen anything.

No one believed me.

Mia had been the Family heir. I was merely the backup, and our parents hadn't even wanted that. The only reason was that Beth had been ill at the time.

I hadn't named the killer, so they all assumed I was hiding it on purpose.

They took Mia away. I was left behind.

I dragged myself through the wreckage, crawling forward as the rain poured down, blurring my vision, hammering against my wounds.

I curled into a ball on the ground, hugging my knees, face twisted in agony, sobbing.

The memory extraction made me weep tears of blood.

Beth scoffed.

"You deserved it. If you'd named the killer, no one would've left you there. Even if you'd died on that spot, nobody would've felt sorry for you."

The elders backed her up. "She's right."

"Covering for the killer is no different from doing it yourself!"

"An ungrateful snake like her deserves to die. Poor Mia. Even in her last breath, she was still calling for her sister."

Then the screen suddenly jumped to another scene.

It showed a wild rose garden, overgrown and abandoned from neglect. Mia had chosen it as the site for a weapons cache.

She stood in the middle of the garden and told me, her chin lifted with pride, "Once the armory is built here, we can move the whole stockpile. That'll solve a lot of problems."

At this, my mother, Catherine Turner, started to cry.

She broke down sobbing. Mia's intelligence, her competence, only made Catherine hate me more. She had never been able to let go of what happened.

She had tried everything to find the killer.

Dominic had hunted down and killed every suspect. None of them turned out to be the right one.

Even Beth's position as heir had only been given to her much later, when there was no other option.

When Mia and I were kidnapped, every surveillance camera in the area had malfunctioned. Then an explosion destroyed whatever footage remained.

No one knew who had done it.

Only I survived. I was the only one who knew the truth.

Mia took my hand and walked me through the entire garden. She picked the most beautiful wild rose and gave it to me, smiling. "I'll always give you the prettiest things, Selena."

Watching this memory, I couldn't hold back my sobs.

Beth's fury only grew. She stormed over and slapped me across the face. "You make me sick! Mia poured her heart out for you, and you won't even name the person who killed her!

"How can you be so selfish? You never cared about her at all."

The moment she finished, the screen showed Mia turning away from me.

I had taken the rose she gave me and thrown it away the instant her back was turned.

The Family members shot to their feet, pointing and shouting. "I knew it!"

"She was faking it the whole time! Mia treated her like a real sister, and she's nothing but an ungrateful snake! The Family can't tolerate someone this selfish!"

"Exactly!"

The louder they screamed, the higher the current in the chair surged.

Beth knew full well that I was allergic to pollen.

But she didn't say a word in my defense. She joined them, cursing me along with the rest.

"Thank God for Beth. Otherwise, with Mia gone, this snake would've been heir."

"Keep watching. Finding the killer is what matters."

My consciousness began to fade. The past came flooding back. My memories tangled together: the girl studying at the academy and the woman counting inventory on the docks. The two versions of me overlapped, and then Mia appeared. She smiled at me.Beth ran over and took my hand. "We'll be together forever."I ran after her, and in that moment, the thing I'd buried deepest was finally unearthed. It was a casino, eight years ago.A group of gamblers, out of their minds with desperation, had pulled guns on the dealers. Guards surrounded the entire building. But in the private room, Marco was on his knees in front of Mia and me.He begged, "Please don't kill him. He's my brother. He made a mistake. Give him a chance to make it right."Mia's expression didn't change. "Anyone who causes trouble in the casino dies. No exceptions."You're my father's underboss. You know the rules."A gunshot echoed from the main floor.Marco spun around, eyes wide. When he looked back at Mia, a flicker of resen

The words were barely out of her mouth. The room erupted in fury and suspicion.Catherine couldn't hold back any longer. She rushed at Monica and seized her by the throat. "Why did he kill my daughter?!"We gave him everything! Why would he do this?!"Her eyes were filled with despair. The veins on the backs of her hands stood out like cords. The hatred in her was terrifying to behold.Monica's eyes were wide with fear."I'm sorry...""Sorry doesn't bring back my daughter!"Beth collapsed to the floor, too drained to even argue. The room looked at me. For the first time, there was pity in their eyes, but not a single person spoke up for me.A cold gleam flickered in Beth's eyes. When she looked at me, the hatred was still there."This is your doing! Marco would never have killed Mia. You killed Marco, and now there's no one left to prove anything!"Your memory doesn't show him committing the murder."All it shows is you, half-dead after the explosion, grabbing his jacket."For all we k

Monica's face appeared on the screen. She carried the suit jacket home, hands shaking, and opened a safe. She knelt on the floor and wept in silence. There, on the screen, clear as day: the hem of the suit jacket, stained with a bloody handprint. My handprint, pressed into the fabric when I'd grabbed the killer. The moment this image appeared, the entire room drew a sharp breath.Monica's face turned white. Her hands loosened from my throat.Someone in the crowd shouted, "How is that possible?! That's the killer's jacket!""That's the handprint Selena left on it!""The masked killer was Marco! That's why Monica panicked and took his jacket!""A perfect misdirection.""But why... why did Selena kill Marco?"Beth couldn't process it. When this scene appeared, the room erupted in murmurs and whispers that crashed over the hall like a wave."Why is this in her memories?!""Marco was shot to death at the docks. It was while he was searching for Mia's killer. He was assassinated.""Must've been the same person!""She's truly heartless. She won't name the killer, and now she's rubbing salt in everyone's wounds."Dominic bowed his head and cried.Marco had served the Family for decades, risking his life time and again. He'd commanded deep respect. The Family owed much of its success to him.Someone hurled a glass at me.It shattered against my forehead. Blood ran freely."Even on death's door, you won't spare anyone! Shouts erupted from the crowd. They stared at the screen and yelled, "That's the crime scene!""The truth is about to come out!"Beth stepped forward, her ankles trembling. The image cut to the scene. My face appeared on the screen. Then a wall of smoke filled the display and swallowed me from view.Another face flashed onto the screen.
