My Sister Put Me on Trial
My Sister Put Me on Trial
Author: Madam Fenghuo

Chapter 1

Author: Madam Fenghuo
Beth had called a Family council.

This meeting was about me, a trial over what had happened to our adopted sister, Mia Turner, eight years ago.

Rifles lined every wall of the council chamber.

The Family elders closed in around me, hurling accusations.

I was already wasted from illness. I'd just coughed up blood and hadn't even caught my breath before they bound me hand and foot and lashed me in place at the center of the room.

An old man's cane cracked down hard across my spine.

"How can you be so heartless, Selena! She was your sister! She lived with you for twenty years!

"You watched her die and did nothing! How could you?!"

The blows nearly broke me apart.

Blood sprayed from my mouth.

Before I could react, my elderly father, Dominic Turner, pointed at me. "This is how you treated your sister. She can't rest in peace because of you.

"This Family has always stood together. How did we raise such an ungrateful snake?"

One of the elders spoke up. "I heard that when her mother begged her to name the kidnapper, she didn't say a single word."

"Truly despicable."

I said nothing. The taste of blood was thick in my throat.

The shouting made my head pound. Beth saw me struggling and drove her foot straight into my chest.

"Just looking at you makes me sick!"

She was probably the one who hated me most now.

The Turner Family had three daughters, and Family rules demanded that we stand united and never harm one another.

We had always lived by that. Close as could be, always facing outward together.

But eight years ago, Mia and I had been kidnapped. Mia, stubborn as ever, cursed the kidnapper and was killed. She died in the fire.

From that day on, everything between Beth and me shattered.

Just because I'd been taken alongside Mia, I became the one person who supposedly knew the killer's identity.

Beth pressed her foot into my chest and warned me, "I'll give you one more chance. Tell me who the kidnapper is, right now.

"Save yourself some pain. Once I bring out the evidence, things won't go this easy for you."

The pain in my chest was blinding. I grabbed her ankle, just trying to get a breath in.

But Beth only pressed harder.

"You can't do this. You can't extract my memories."

The pain was draining the strength from my voice.

"Scared now? When Mom was on her knees begging you back then, why didn't you talk?!

"Today, I'm getting justice for our sister."

Tears spilled down my face. "You'll regret this!"

"If I hadn't needed you to find the truth, I would've killed you years ago!

"Strap her to the iron chair! Turn on the current! Attach the extractor! She doesn't come down until we find the killer!"

Beth glared at me, then stomped on my face.

The moment she finished speaking, two guards hauled me up and chained me to the chair with iron shackles.

The pain was instant. My whole body seized.

When the current hit, it felt like ants gnawing through my heart. The agony nearly split me open.

The extractor needles drove into my scalp.

I couldn't hold back the screams. They echoed through the chamber. The Family members pointed and shouted, all claiming to speak for Family unity and justice.

I listened to their curses through the haze of pain.

My eyes drifted shut.

On the screen, my memories began to surface, playing for everyone to see.

I'm begging you."Monica clutched at my clothes, pleading. She kept begging and slapping herself.I pressed my lips together. I knew Beth led with her heart. Learning the truth would destroy her.I wiped my tears and swallowed the truth whole. The last word Mia said before she died wasn't meant for me. My consciousness began to fade. The past came flooding back. My memories tangled together: the girl studying at the academy and the woman counting inventory on the docks. The two versions of me overlapped, and then Mia appeared. She smiled at me.Beth ran over and took my hand. "We'll be together forever."I ran after her, and in that moment, the thing I'd buried deepest was finally unearthed. It was a casino, eight years ago.A group of gamblers, out of their minds with desperation, had pulled guns on the dealers. Guards surrounded the entire building. But in the private room, Marco was on his knees in front of Mia and me.He begged, "Please don't kill him. He's my brother. He made a mistake. Give him a chance to make it right."Mia's expression didn't change. "Anyone who causes trouble in the casino dies. No exceptions."You're my father's underboss. You know the rules."A gunshot echoed from the main floor.Marco spun around, eyes wide. When he looked back at Mia, a flicker of resen

The words were barely out of her mouth. The room erupted in fury and suspicion.Catherine couldn't hold back any longer. She rushed at Monica and seized her by the throat. "Why did he kill my daughter?!"We gave him everything! Why would he do this?!"Her eyes were filled with despair. The veins on the backs of her hands stood out like cords. The hatred in her was terrifying to behold.Monica's eyes were wide with fear."I'm sorry...""Sorry doesn't bring back my daughter!"Beth collapsed to the floor, too drained to even argue. The room looked at me. For the first time, there was pity in their eyes, but not a single person spoke up for me.A cold gleam flickered in Beth's eyes. When she looked at me, the hatred was still there."This is your doing! Marco would never have killed Mia. You killed Marco, and now there's no one left to prove anything!"Your memory doesn't show him committing the murder."All it shows is you, half-dead after the explosion, grabbing his jacket."For all we k

Monica's face appeared on the screen. She carried the suit jacket home, hands shaking, and opened a safe. She knelt on the floor and wept in silence. There, on the screen, clear as day: the hem of the suit jacket, stained with a bloody handprint. My handprint, pressed into the fabric when I'd grabbed the killer. The moment this image appeared, the entire room drew a sharp breath.Monica's face turned white. Her hands loosened from my throat.Someone in the crowd shouted, "How is that possible?! That's the killer's jacket!""That's the handprint Selena left on it!""The masked killer was Marco! That's why Monica panicked and took his jacket!""A perfect misdirection.""But why... why did Selena kill Marco?"Beth couldn't process it. Her knees buckled, and she staggered backward step by step, eyes glued to the screen. On the footage, Monica wiped her tears with the back of her hand. She hid the jacket inside the safe, carried it to the docks, and in the darkness, bit down on her lip to k

When this scene appeared, the room erupted in murmurs and whispers that crashed over the hall like a wave."Why is this in her memories?!""Marco was shot to death at the docks. It was while he was searching for Mia's killer. He was assassinated.""Must've been the same person!""She's truly heartless. She won't name the killer, and now she's rubbing salt in everyone's wounds."Dominic bowed his head and cried.Marco had served the Family for decades, risking his life time and again. He'd commanded deep respect. The Family owed much of its success to him.Someone hurled a glass at me.It shattered against my forehead. Blood ran freely."Even on death's door, you won't spare anyone! I never imagined the Family had someone this cruel!""Even if you won't name the killer, you didn't have to put this on display! You're vile!"Then Marco appeared in my memories. The room erupted in outrage, and their hatred for me deepened.Beth's eyes went dead. Her shoulders locked. She turned to me with

Shouts erupted from the crowd. They stared at the screen and yelled, "That's the crime scene!""The truth is about to come out!"Beth stepped forward, her ankles trembling. The image cut to the scene.
