Chapter 3

Nina's POV:

The city's elite had gathered for a lavish Christmas party.

I stood alone in a corner, every wound on my body throbbing.

I'd nearly been killed in last night's attack, but I still forced myself to come.

My parents stood in the middle of the ballroom, glasses raised, proudly showing Wendy off to the guests.

"This is our daughter, Wendy. We hope you'll all give her your support."

Praise and flattery poured in from all around them.

"What a lovely young woman. Wendy is beautiful, graceful, and charming."

Wendy wore a couture gown and soaked up every compliment.

Ethan never left her side, shielding her from the crush of guests.

In the three years since I'd come home, no one had ever treated me with that kind of gentleness or patience.

Then one of the guests watching asked, "Mr. Mercer, where's that biological daughter you went to so much trouble to find? I haven't seen her tonight."

The noisy ballroom went silent.

Mrs. Mercer immediately put on a sad, helpless expression.

"That girl always has to have her way."

My father said impatiently, "She doesn't know how to behave."

Mrs. Mercer sighed softly.

"Three years ago, we brought her home from the orphanage, and we've been nothing but good to her.

"Last night she suddenly went missing, and we searched for her all night.

"Turns out she was just throwing a tantrum. She even called the police just to cause trouble. None of us slept a wink."

I looked at the disgust on my parents' faces, and my heart seemed to stop.

The memory was so clear it could have been yesterday.

Back then, at the orphanage gate, my mother approached me for the first time.

She stroked my face and said my name softly. "Nina, sweetheart, Mommy finally found you.

"It's all my fault. I lost you all those years ago, and you've been through so much.

"I'll never let anyone hurt you ever again."

I threw myself into her arms, crying my eyes out.

Now, every one of those tender promises only made the betrayal hurt more.

Every word tore apart what little hope I had left, and it hurt so much I could barely breathe.

My father went on, "She has no manners, so I made a point of not bringing her tonight. I didn't want her ruining the evening for everyone."

Wendy immediately put on a look of concern and stepped forward. "Nina spent so long in the orphanage that she picked up some bad habits.

"Mom and Dad are really good to her. She just throws a lot of tantrums."

In just a few sentences, they'd painted me as an ungrateful brat.

The guests around them immediately looked disgusted.

"So that's how it is. How ungrateful."

"That's what you get with a girl from an orphanage. No proper upbringing."

I stood in the corner as the cut on my forehead started to throb, reminding me of everything I'd been through last night.

My family was right in front of me, but it felt like there was an ocean between us that I could never cross.

Then my father pulled out an elegant jewelry box and opened it in front of everyone. Inside was a stunning diamond necklace.

He fastened it around Wendy's neck himself.

"Wendy, this is your Christmas present. You're the only one who deserves to be called a Mercer."

The room broke into applause.

Someone asked offhandedly, "What about Nina? No present for her?"

Mrs. Mercer laughed out loud.

"She's not worth the trouble."

That one sentence crushed the last shred of hope I had of ever having a real family.
