I straightened up and stepped out of the shadows, one step at a time.

The moment I appeared, the noisy ballroom went quiet.

All eyes in the room turned to my injured face.

In the middle of the crowd, Wendy suddenly looked panicked.

But she quickly put on her sweet, innocent act again, came over, and linked her arm through mine like we were close.

"Nina? What are you doing here?"

I didn't say anything. I just pulled my arm away, and Wendy instantly looked wounded.

Mr. and Mrs. Mercer looked embarrassed and furious.

Mr. Mercer shouted at me, "Nina, who gave you permission to come here?"

Mrs. Mercer's voice was ice-cold too. "What do you think you're doing here?! We just finished cleaning up the mess you made by calling the police. What kind of trouble are you trying to stir up now?"

Ethan stepped in front of Wendy, as if he was afraid I'd hurt her.

"Go home right now. Don't make a scene here."

"That necklace was bought with money from the trust fund Grandpa left me, wasn't it, Mom?"

I didn't raise my voice, but every word was clear.

Mr. and Mrs. Mercer's expressions changed.

"Nina, what is this nonsense?"

Wendy grabbed hold of me, digging her nails into the wound on my arm while putting on a teary, helpless act.

"Nina! Are you mad at Mom and Dad for not getting you a present? Then I don't want the necklace. You can have it. Please just stop making a scene, okay?"

I shoved her hand away.

"Don't touch me!"

Wendy fell to the floor with a cry. "Ow, that hurts..."

"Nina! Have you lost your mind?!"

Ethan rushed over, shoved me aside, and carefully helped Wendy up.

He glared at me like I was his worst enemy.

"Apologize to Wendy! You didn't come home all night, got into a fight with some thugs, and ended up looking like this. Now you come here and cause a scene?!"

Mr. Mercer was livid.

"How can you be this greedy? When did the Mercer family ever set up a trust fund for you?!

"Get out! You're a disgrace to the Mercer family! You're no daughter of mine!"

They were all waiting for me to apologize and slink away like I always had.

But I didn't.

"The men who attacked me at the abandoned rest stop last night have been arrested."

I went on, "They confessed that someone hired them to kill me."

Wendy flinched.

But Mr. Mercer only scoffed, "You'll make up any lie to steal the spotlight!

"As of today, you're no longer a Mercer. Get out!"

Mrs. Mercer waved over security. "Somebody drag this crazy woman out of here!"

Two burly security guards closed in on me right away, reaching to grab my shoulders.

That was when it happened.

The ballroom doors burst open from the outside!

"Let's see who dares lay a hand on her!" A man's deep voice rang out.

Dozens of bodyguards filed in and quickly sealed off every exit in the ballroom.

Then a tall figure walked slowly through the parted crowd.

With everyone staring at him in shock, Adrian didn't so much as glance at anyone else.

He walked up to me, took off his coat, and tenderly draped it over my shoulders.
