Chapter 9

Author: Eirlys
By the time the next summer rolled around, I found out I was pregnant.

Jasper built a swing under the giant oak tree behind our estate.

After tying the last rope, he sat on it to test the weight.

"It's sturdy. Try it, Cora."

I sat down, and Jasper gently pushed me from behind.

The evening breeze was cool and refreshing.

From then on, I sat under the tree for a little while every evening.

A lot happened back at my old home.

I guess he figured I was reading them."Mom just sits in your room spacing out. Call her, if you can.""Stella isn't doing well. She and her future mate fought constantly. She came home every other day demanding we stick up for her.""But Dad refused.""She severed the mate bond. She's back home now.""Mom learned how to cook a lot of new dishes. She's waiting for you to come home.""Cora, are you ever coming back?"I was eating blueberries Evelyn brought me when I read that last text.My hand slipped, dropping a berry

There was only one message from my father."Your new flower crown is ready. Pick it up when you get back."He had always been stern and quiet. Whenever there was a dispute, he just handed down the final verdict.Like a judge passing a sentence. Except I was always the losing party. The fact that he sent this meant he was bowing his head. I knew that, but I didn't want to accept it.I didn't read any more messages, nor did I block them.I just hadn't decided how to deal with them yet.Exactly a month after Jasper and I bonded, it was my birthday.Evelyn ordered a massive, multi-tiered cake.Written in icing: "Happy Birthday to our dearest Cora."She cooked a massive feast again. I tried to go in and help several times, but she kept shooing me out."You're the birthday girl today. You don't lift a finger."I sat on the couch, a little dazed. In the past, whenever Stella and I had a birthday, only Stella's name was on the cake.Because when we were little, she cried and said she didn't wa

Over the next few days, Blake left early and came home late, trying to track Cora down.He went to Cora's old company and introduced himself as her brother.A coworker who had attended Cora's ceremony looked at him with sheer mockery."You're Cora's brother? That's funny, I didn't see you at her bonding ceremony.""Are you sure you're family?"Blake felt like he was choking, unable to get a single word out. Finally, the coworker sent him a video of the ceremony. In the video, Cora's eyes were crinkled in a bright smile, her face glowing with a happiness completely unlike the silent, gloomy sister he remembered. As Blake retreated in shame, he heard the coworker muttering behind him."Calls himself a brother? Doesn't even know his sister got bonded. Who would believe that?""Man, I can't imagine what kind of life Cora lived before."Blake's back stiffened. He remembered the day Cora left.Everyone in the house was screaming at her. He had personally pinned her shoulders down, cursing he

(Third-person POV)It was the day of Stella's bonding ceremony, and the whole family was up early.Blake saw Cora's bedroom door shut tight and naturally assumed she had snuck back in last night with her tail between her legs.He knocked a few times. When no one answered, he impatiently threw the door open.Only to find Cora wasn't home at all.He yelled out in panic."Mom, Cora's not in her room! Did she not come back last night?"His mother froze."Impossible! Is she not doing her ceremony today?"Blake walked out of the room, his face dark."She didn't take any luggage."His father waved a hand dismissively."Don't worry about it. She probably just went straight to the chapel in a huff. Since when does she actually run away?"Mother suppressed the rising panic in her chest and agreed."Stella, hurry up and get ready. We'll head to the chapel first.""Your ceremony is the most important thing today."When the family arrived at the chapel, Father reminded the priest, "We have two coup

Jasper led me to the wedding car covered in flowers. The car drove slowly toward the Iron Ridge Pack's sacred grounds.Along the way, deafening cheers erupted. The entire pack lined the streets, waving flags, shouting Jasper's and my names, sending us their warmest blessings.I looked out the window at those kind, joyful faces, and my nose stung. Not a single person from my family attended my ceremony. I thought I would look like a joke. But here, I received nothing but genuine blessings.I buried my face in the crook of Jasper's neck, afraid to look up, terrified my tears would ruin my makeup.Jasper held my waist tightly, his large hand gently rubbing my back."Don't cry, my girl," he murmured in my ear, his voice deep and grounding. "You deserve all the love in the world. From today on, this is your home."The car stopped in the center of the sacred grounds. As soon as I stepped out, a woman in an elegant gown walked up to us quickly. It was Jasper's mother, Luna Evelyn of the Iron

Three days until the ceremony. The whole house was in a frenzy prepping for Stella's grand bonding ceremony.Maids and designers bustled through the living room.No one even glanced at the console table by the door, where my invitation sat. The date on it had already been moved up to tomorrow.Standing alone in the noisy hallway, I suddenly thought of my late grandmother. She was the only person in this house who didn't favor Stella.Whenever my parents punished me by making me stand and skip meals, Grandma would always sneak me a warm piece of bread and gently stroke my head. Before she passed, Grandma left me her quiet apartment downtown. It was the last safe haven she left me.I wanted to go see it. I wanted to feel that warmth one last time before leaving this house for good.Half an hour later, I stood in front of the apartment door. But my key wouldn't turn in the lock.I called a locksmith. After checking the property details, the man gave me a weird look."Miss, the registered
