I sat quietly, anxiously waiting for the doctor to come out. My heart wouldn’t stop pounding, panic clawed at my chest, and a deep fear settled in— how was I supposed to face Luca now?

I’d pushed him away so many times. I doubted him, accused him, and refused to believe a word he said. But now that I know he’s been telling the truth all along, I don’t know how to look him in the eyes.

I kept tapping my foot against the floor, nervously twisting my thumbs together, feeling like a mess.

I was angry with myself. Why couldn’t I just trust him? Why did I let my gut feeling and Aaron cloud my judgment? Luca has never wronged me. I should’ve seen that. I should’ve believed in him from the start.

The panic was consuming me, and I felt like I was spiraling until the door creaked open. I jumped to my feet, my heart leaping. The doctor stepped out and approached Luca’s family. I rushed over to them, holding my breath.
