Chapter 2

Mister Rhapsody
By the time the police arrived, my face was swollen beyond recognition.

Mom sat nearby, sobbing quietly.

David gritted his teeth and demanded answers from me. "I left 50 dollars for Abby. How could she not have had enough money for ice cream?

"You bastard, be honest with me. Why did you go to the scrap yard on the edge of town? You knew there were traffickers around there and that scrap yard was in the middle of nowhere. What the hell were you thinking, going there?"

I never wanted to go to the scrap yard. I hated that filthy place, with its piles of trash and an unbearable stench. But I had no choice. Whenever I ran short of money at boarding school, the only way I could make money was by collecting bottles and selling them.

Even now, my room still reeked of the sour, stale smell that clung to all those bottles. I felt like the stench had seeped into my skin, into my very soul, leaving me too ashamed to hold my head up wherever I went.

"I'm sorry. I'm really sorry. Abby wanted ribs and seafood. We spent all the money you gave to her at the market this morning. The ribs are already in the oven, and the seafood is still in the fridge.

"Dad, you've always spoiled her. She started throwing a fit because she wanted ice cream. I didn't know what else to do—"

A brutal slap stopped me mid-sentence.

"You bastard! You lost Abby, and now you're trying to pin this on me?" David grabbed me by the hair and yanked me to my feet, his hand already raised for another slap.

The police quickly stepped in and pulled him away.

"Mr. Lambert, you need to calm down. We have the best chance of finding your daughter within the first 24 hours. Tell us exactly when and where she disappeared. Have you searched everywhere she might have gone?"

David turned toward me, his bloodshot eyes burning with rage.

I hunched into myself, forcing myself to stay calm as I recounted everything that had happened. I hadn't slept at all since noon yesterday. I had searched everywhere she might have gone, but no one had seen her.

The officers' expressions grew increasingly serious. "She disappeared around noon yesterday. Why didn't you report her missing until 30 hours later?"

"I… I didn't realize she was missing. I thought she'd gone home without me…"

David lunged at me again, his eyes filled with such rage that I was certain he wanted me dead.

"If you couldn't find her, why didn't you tell us sooner? Why did you wait until we came back? Zachary! What are you up to?"

The officers stopped him again. But this time, instead of forcing him back, they looked at me with suspicion, waiting for me to explain myself.

"I'm sorry… I'm really sorry… I was scared. I didn't know what to do."

I trembled uncontrollably. I lifted the hem of my shirt and wiped away the tears and sweat running down my face.

That was when the officers noticed the horrific scars covering my chest and abdomen. Their expressions hardened as they fixed David with a stern gaze.

I continued, "I was scared you'd be angry when you found out Abby was missing. I was scared you'd blame me and hit me. I thought I could find her on my own."

Tears kept streaming down my dazed face.

David clenched his jaw, his anger giving way to panic and grief.

"Officers, forget about him for now. We'll deal with him after we find my daughter! Please, help me find her first," David pleaded.

"She's smart and well-behaved. Her teachers always say she has what it takes to get into Bromwich College. If she's been taken by traffickers, who knows what they'll do to her?"

Finding Abigail was their priority, so the police put my injuries aside for the time being.

That night, Mom, David and the police searched every place Abigail might have gone until dawn. But there was still no sign of her.

I was left alone at home, unable to sleep. I was too afraid to close my eyes.

The bottles were all gone now, leaving an empty space where they had once been piled. I stepped into the empty space and put on the jacket David had bought for me.

It was the first time in my life I had ever owned something new. It looked nice, and it fit me perfectly. But no matter what I wore, I could never hide the stench that clung to me.

  • My Sister's Missing, and I'm on Trial   Chapter 10

I remembered my last conversation with David. I told him that Abigail hadn't gone missing. I was the one who killed her! That day, when he was about to beat me to death, I wanted to tell him I had killed Abigail. As long as I got to see him completely broken by despair, dying would have been worth it.But he stopped. Just when he should've shown no mercy, he held back. Instead, he started investigating me, determined to expose my lies. But how could he? I had planned everything so carefully. Two months before that, I had deliberately started following cases involving traffickers and missing children. I steered everyone's attention in that direction and led them to investigate along those lines. After David confirmed that I had gone nearly 30 hours without sleep, running all over the place to "find" Abigail, he actually stopped suspecting me.The truth was, I was running around looking for the perfect place to dispose of her body. I'd successfully misled both David and the police.

Ten minutes later, David opened his eyes wide and desperately tried to get out of bed to grab me, only to collapse just one step away. He could no longer crawl forward. He flailed his hands in anger, pain, and despair. Gradually, he stopped reaching for me. Instead, he clutched his chest, struggling to breathe. Each breath came out with a harsh, rattling wheeze."Doctor! Get a doctor!" David cried."Huh? What did you say? I can't hear you."A chain-reaction crash had occurred on the nearby highway just before I reached the hospital. The injured were all brought to this hospital, and every doctor was swamped. No one could hear David's faint cries for help.I simply stood there and watched as his breathing slowly stopped. I had waited so long for this moment. I thought I would laugh—that I would feel satisfied, relieved, or maybe even happier than I had ever been. But… I felt nothing. He was like a pile of garbage rotting right in front of me, the stench so foul it made it hard

I instinctively clenched my fists, a wave of panic washing over me.Mom noticed something was off with me and rushed over, grabbing me tightly. "Don't even think about running! You're coming to the police station with me! I never told anyone about what you did to your own father, so I didn't cover for you. You can't threaten me."I suddenly found it absurd. She was so eager to see me go to prison. Her hand clamped around my wrist like a vise as she dragged me downstairs, where we ran into Frank, who had just arrived."Where's Abby? Officer Cole, you found her, haven't you?"But there was no one behind Frank. He shook his head slightly. "I'm sorry. I came here to let you know that all the traffickers have been arrested. But none of them have seen Abigail. But don't worry. I promise I'll keep searching for her…"Mom stood there for a long time, murmuring in disbelief. "How could… how could they not find her?"You were scared! I saw it, Zachary. I saw how scared you were when I

Frank was a good cop. When we were at the hospital, he saw the scars covering my body. After learning that I'd been abused for nearly ten years, his eyes turned red."What kind of monster does that to a kid? He abused you for years. What he did was a serious crime. Why didn't you report him?"I lowered my head and rubbed my eyes in response to Frank's anger and concern. "I was too scared. If I reported him and he got out, he would've beaten me even worse."He squeezed my hand tightly. "That won't happen. He's going to prison now. You just focus on living your life. Your sister's disappearance was an accident. You didn't do it on purpose, so don't blame yourself. We'll do everything we can to find her…"When I got home, Mom was nearly hysterical. She wiped away her tears and cried, "What are you trying to do? Zachary, what do you want? Abby is missing, and David is in jail. Are you going to hurt me next? Do you want me dead too?"Now that it was just the two of us, I stopped preten

Seeing that I was finally willing to speak, Mom's cold expression finally changed. I even saw genuine hope and excitement in her eyes at the possibility that Abigail might come home. But I only answered coldly, "She was taken by human traffickers. She's never coming back.""You really aren't afraid to die? Fine, Zachary! You had your chance. David will make you pay!"Mom trembled with rage, her eyes filling with a murderous hatred, as if she wanted to tear me apart. She gritted her teeth and stood up to find David. Just then, someone knocked on the door.Mom froze, seemingly trying to guess who it was."Go open the door," I said bluntly. "It's probably Officer Cole. I asked him to check on me regularly to make sure you two don't hurt me again."You can't kill me now. And you'll never find Abby."I finally dropped my innocent act, the corners of my lips curling up as I revealed the darkness I'd been hiding all along.Mom backed away warily. "You… You…"I stared at her calmly,

"Mom, I didn't do it. I didn't…""Stop pretending." Mom cut me off with a cold look. "When your own father got drunk and fell to his death, no one was home. Everyone thought it was an accident. But I saw what happened. I saw you pour the soapy water there beforehand. I saw you slowly loosen the balcony railing," she said."Zac, where is Abby? Tell me. I won't hold it against you. As long as we can find her, I won't tell anyone what you did."At that moment, I felt like the belt was hitting me again, cutting through my skin and striking deep into my heart. In the past, Mom would at least pretend. She would secretly slip me some money, pat my head, or ask if I was okay, keeping up the appearance of a loving mother. She pretended not to see it when David beat me. Then afterward, she would come to comfort me.But now, she didn't even bother pretending. Her eyes were cold, wary, and filled with undisguised disgust.I didn't understand. I truly didn't understand."Mom, I'm your son
