Chapter 3

Author: Steal A Star Candy
The next day was the school anniversary celebration.

The moment I stepped onto campus grounds early in the morning, I felt all eyes on me.

Some of them were filled with pity, and some of them were filled with disdain.

Some guys even pulled the girls next to them behind them.

It was as though I hadn't just stolen the school belle's clothes, but that I was also a hooligan who would go around stealing other people's girlfriends.

Very soon, I found out the reason for their behavior.

Connor had posted a photo of a tank top on the school's social media page.

There were also photos of me leaving the Stewarts' home early in the morning, getting into a car with Wanda's jacket draped over my arm, and entering her bedroom in the middle of the night.

He had thoughtfully arranged them all into a collage, which came accompanied by a caption that read: [From feeding her breakfast to barging into her bedroom in the middle of the night, how far can this crazy suitor go?]

There were plenty of geniuses in the comments.

Someone suggested that Wanda check for hidden cameras in her bedroom.

Someone suspected that I had been secretly collecting strands of her hair.

Someone even said that I might be crafting a life-sized figure.

I was in awe of their imagination.

Yet, why didn't their average score in the essay match up to their wonderfully rich imagination?

The photos were all real.

However, the first photo was of me leaving my own house.

In the second photo, Wanda had complained that she was feeling warm before taking her jacket off and throwing it to me.

In the third photo, my mom had asked me to go to Wanda's room to wake her.

Wanda had 17 alarms set that day.

None of them woke her up.

As for that tank top, the photo had been taken while I was bringing in the laundry on the balcony.

Wanda had thrown her white tank top and red socks into the washing machine, and her tank top had turned as pink as Barbie's clothes.

I had posted the photo with a caption that read: [Ms. Stewart cannot take care of herself. I suggest a factory reset.]

Connor had cut off the words and all the other clothes on the balcony, leaving just me and the tank top in his cropped photo.

It would be a great loss for the media industry if he didn't end up being a content creator.

I went looking for Amy in the staffroom to try to ask for the post to be deleted.

She was busy sorting out the program for today's event.

She spoke without even looking up, "I'll deal with it after the school anniversary celebration."

"The post has spread across the entire campus."

"Connor is hosting the event tonight and is also attending the award ceremony for outstanding students. Questioning him about such things will only affect his mental state."

I read the insults posted on the school's social media account.

His mental state was important while my reputation was gossip fodder.

I reached out and attempted to grab my confiscated phone, but Amy slammed the drawer shut.

"It's not time for you to get it back yet. Gerald, others wouldn't misunderstand the situation if you keep your distance from your female classmates."

I was stunned by her statement.

It appeared that my greatest mistake was not keeping a safe distance of two meters from my biological sister when we were both born.

When I left the staff room, Connor was waiting for me at the door.

He had a bunch of flyers in hand with my photo on them.

It was accompanied by a caption in an alarming red font.

[Stop campus stalking. Please stop stalking and harassing female students.]

"Many parents will be attending today's school anniversary celebration."

He stuffed the flyers in my arms and announced, "Give these out yourself. Take it as an apology to Wanda."

I threw the flyers back at him.

"No way."

Connor didn't get mad.

Instead, he said, "Then don't attend the anniversary celebration."

He shot Horace a look.

They then grabbed me by the arms and dragged me backstage.

Connor opened the door to a room filled with old stage curtains and props.

"Stay here until the event ends. I don't want you going onstage and making a fool of yourself."

They pushed me into the room and slammed the door shut, and I heard the sound of a lock being turned.

I pounced at the door and banged it hard.

"Connor Graham! You're restricting my personal freedom!"

Horace sneered.

"Quit trying to scare us with big words. We'll release you once the event is over."

I wanted to continue yelling, but my nose started to itch.

A thick layer of dust covered everything in the room.

I had been allergic to dust since I was young.

My eyes started reddening within ten minutes in the room, and I started to feel short of breath.

I banged the door hard with my fists.

"Open up! My allergies are acting up!"

There were two seconds of silence before Connor drawled lazily, "Quit acting. Wanda isn't back yet. There isn't anyone around to watch the show you're putting on."

Their footsteps faded into the distance.

Music started to play in the hall.

The host announced excitedly that the school team was done with the match and was on their way back to school.

I leaned against the door and slid down to the ground.

Fine.

If they continued to keep me locked in here, the first thing Wanda would have to do upon returning to school wouldn't be to attend the celebration.

She would have to go to the hospital for her one and only biological brother.

After Connor was punished, a new tradition was suddenly established in school.Every single day, people would stare at Wanda and me whenever they walked past us.It felt as though they were trying to look for any evidence to prove the blood relation between us.Someone said we have the same eyebrows.Someone said we sound similar when scolding others.Someone summarized it most accurately."Both have that reckless disregard for others that makes you want to slap them."I agreed with the first half of the sentence.Wanda would have to take the credit for the second half.I managed to get my phone, bank card, and clothes back. However, I didn't manage to fish my house key out of the pond. The Grahams compensated me for locking me in, on top of my medical fees and monetary loss. The school also revised the regulations for confiscating items.Put simply, anyone who dared to take other people's house key would have to think hard about whether to bring the other party back home

I listened to the recording three times. The first time round, I was shocked. The second time round, I was filled with doubt. The third time round, I started getting impressed.I had spoken those words indeed.Just not on the same day and not in the same context."Connor" was from yesterday's meeting."Withdraw from school" was from me trying to persuade my deskmate not to withdraw from the school club."I'll ruin" was from a class."His reputation" was from my accusation. The amount of editing work was insane. There was a level of craftsmanship evident amidst the intense hatred he harbored against me.After the recording was published, the tables turned once again.Connor also published a photo of his wrist wrapped up in gauze while he was in the hospital. He claimed that he was a victim of cyberbullying and no longer dared to return to school. Many guys who fancied Wanda started scolding me in the comments for being a control freak. They accused me of using my status

The mention of the police made the look on Melissa’s face change."It's just a tiff between classmates. Must you go to such an extent?""Yes."I pointed to my hands that were still shaking."Your son's future prospects are valuable. My life is, too."Melissa was about to say something when the principal, Bernie Shaw, hurried over.He first dispersed the students before inviting both parents to a meeting room.My parents were still overseas and could only attend virtually. Before we stepped into the meeting room, Connor suddenly grabbed my arm."Gerald."His voice was low."Are you bent on destroying me?"I flung his hand away."You're the one who locked the door. You're the one who posted those things. You're the one who snatched away my belongings. How am I suddenly the aggressive one when the police are involved?"He gritted his teeth."I just really like Wanda."There he goes again. The most powerful immunity. It was as though, with that word alone, he could reduce

Although the post was not published, a screenshot of it had spread across the campus.Half an hour later, Connor's mother, Melissa David, rushed to the school. She hugged her son before turning to look at me."Are you the one who bullied Connor?"I looked down at myself. My school uniform was stained with soy milk and filth. My arm had scratches from wood splinters.I still had no idea where my phone, bank card, and house key were.Connor, on the other hand, was dressed in a smart suit, and his hair was still perfectly styled.Who exactly was the bully here? It was a question that was truly a test of one's eyesight.Amy quickly explained everything that had happened.Instead of scolding her son, Melissa looked at Wanda with furrowed brows."Connor had always thought that you had no blood relations with Gerald. Since you know that he likes you, why didn't you make it clear earlier?"Wanda found it ridiculous."How many sentences have I actually spoken to him in total up ti

After the footage was played, Connor's first reaction wasn't to apologize.Instead, he rushed to the control panel and jerked out the cable connected to the screen. The screen went dark, but everyone in the hall had seen everything.Connor held the cable in his hand, his eyes turning red."I was so mad at that time. I have held a torch for Wanda for three years, yet he boasted about her before me daily. I didn't know he had allergies."Horace immediately stepped forward to defend him."It was my idea to lock the door. Connor was just instigated by Gerald."I looked at him, my head cocked to the side."He locked the door while you take the blame. You guys really know how to split the work clearly."Someone in the audience chuckled.Horace flushed red."Quit talking like that. If you hadn't deliberately hidden the fact that you two were siblings, how would Connor have misunderstood?"Some male students who fancied Wanda nodded in agreement. It was my first time realizing tha

The hall was so quiet, only the hum of the projector could be heard.Connor didn't even have time to wipe the look of pure devotion off his face before it stiffened into a hilarious meme.Horace was the first to react."Impossible. You two don't even have the same last name."Wanda cast him a glance."I took my Dad's last name while he took Mom's. Is that against the law?"Horace opened his mouth but couldn't utter a single word.Someone in the audience had already started looking through old posts on the school's social media page."No wonder Gerald can enter the Stewarts' house.""No wonder he has the house key and bank card.""So, that tank top really does belong to his sister?""Goodness, what have we been watching all along?"I held the microphone up and added helpfully, "Pure cotton, three for 89 dollars including shipping."Wanda's face darkened with embarrassment. "Shut up, Gerald.""Oh."It looked like she wanted me to reveal even more details.Connor finally
