Chapter 2

Author: Steal A Star Candy
In the afternoon, Amy was called out of class for a meeting regarding the school anniversary.

The moment she stepped out of class, Connor flopped down on my seat.

"Gerald, did Wanda pass something to you before going for her match?"

I was busy completing an assignment and didn't even look up at him.

"No."

To be accurate, she didn't exactly "pass" them to me.

She practically flung them at me.

Yesterday afternoon, Wanda had boarded the bus headed for the volleyball match.

Before leaving, she had stuffed two notebooks, a jersey, and a bank card into my arms.

She had a great reason for doing so.

They were too heavy.

I simply couldn't understand.

Would those things no longer be under the earth's gravitational pull the moment they entered my bag?

Connor clearly didn't believe me.

He seized the chance when I stood up to hand in my assignment to unzip my bag.

At the next moment, my textbooks, some napkins, and a half-eaten bag of potato chips spilled on the floor.

A black jersey came tumbling out.

Connor's eyes lit up.

"What's this?"

He bent over and picked it up.

"Can't you see for yourself?"

"Why is Wanda's jersey with you?"

"She asked me to wash it for her."

Silence ensued in the classroom.

The expression on Connor's face kept changing.

In his world, washing Wanda's jersey wasn't a chore worth 10 dollars.

Instead, it was a recruitment examination for a potential son-in-law of the Stewart family.

He quickly stuffed the jersey into a transparent bag.

"You've already promised not to harass her anymore. I'll return this to Wanda on your behalf."

I was filled with deep respect for him.

Wanda had worn this jersey for a two-hour volleyball training session and had even fallen into the mud during her training.

When I opened my bag yesterday, the smell had attracted flies from a ten-meter radius.

Connor taking the jersey from me was more than I could wish for.

He pulled out a bank card from the side compartment of my bag.

"You even stole her card?"

"That's for our daily expenses."

"You two share a card for daily expenses?"

He scoffed.

"Gerald, have you been daydreaming about marrying into the Stewart family?"

I fell silent for two seconds.

"Could there be any possibility that I'm referring to the daily expenses of an ordinary family?"

The entire class broke out in wild laughter.

Horace snatched the card and announced grandly, "This is stolen property. I'll hand it over to the student council for safekeeping."

I reached out to try to grab it back.

"That's my money in there, too."

"Lies."

Connor stared at me.

"How could Wanda give you her card?"

I said honestly, "Because she was too lazy to keep it."

Wanda would always call me to make payments whenever she wanted to buy something.

She would simply open her mouth, and I would do her bidding.

My mom thought this was how siblings were supposed to help each other out.

I thought this was what a life-sized parasite looked like.

Connor was certain that I was just quibbling and pulled out a set of keys from the bag.

"Are these keys to Wanda's house?"

"Which is also my house."

He walked to the window.

"Since you can't seem to kick your nasty habit of sneaking into the Stewarts' home, let me help you with that."

My heart leaped to my chest.

"Don't be rash."

Connor swung his arm.

The key cut a perfect arc in the air and landed in the pond downstairs.

It made a plop before sinking to the bottom of the pond.

I leaned against the windowsill and watched it disappear into the depths of the pond.

"Connor Graham!"

He spread his arms out, palms facing up as though he were helpless.

"I'm sorry, I slipped."

"Over ten meters?"

"It's windy today."

The leaves on the trees outside were absolutely still.

It was only windy in his imagination.

I went looking for Amy in the staffroom.

To my frustration, she said that she would wait for Wanda's return before asking for the bank card and jersey back.

As for the keys, she advised me to get a new set.

"Connor was just trying to protect his classmate's valuables. Don't keep thinking the worst of others."

I almost burst out laughing.

Was flinging my house keys into the pond considered protecting his classmate's valuables?

All I wanted was to take back my own bank card, and that was considered 'thinking the worst of others'.

It was clear that the school's rules and regulations were adjusted according to how much a parent donated to the school.

When I walked out of the staffroom, there was another post on the school's social media page.

[Male student keeps a secret stash of the school belle's belongings including her jersey, bank card, and house keys, seemingly trespassing the Stewarts' home regularly.]

The post was accompanied by a photo of Connor holding Wanda's jersey in his arms.

He looked just like a devoted, loving man holding a precious heirloom.

He walked to me and said in a low voice, "I will hand these things over to Wanda personally at the school anniversary tomorrow. I'll show her just how disgusting you really are."

I looked at the transparent bag in his arms.

"You really should seal that bag tight."

"Why?"

"The jersey smells."

The smile on his face stiffened.

At the next moment, the smell of the jersey that had been locked in for three days drifted in the air.

Connor's face turned green as he retched into a trash can.

I stood next to him, patting his back soothingly.

"Don't hold back. You went to great lengths to snatch it over, after all."

After Connor was punished, a new tradition was suddenly established in school.Every single day, people would stare at Wanda and me whenever they walked past us.It felt as though they were trying to look for any evidence to prove the blood relation between us.Someone said we have the same eyebrows.Someone said we sound similar when scolding others.Someone summarized it most accurately."Both have that reckless disregard for others that makes you want to slap them."I agreed with the first half of the sentence.Wanda would have to take the credit for the second half.I managed to get my phone, bank card, and clothes back. However, I didn't manage to fish my house key out of the pond. The Grahams compensated me for locking me in, on top of my medical fees and monetary loss. The school also revised the regulations for confiscating items.Put simply, anyone who dared to take other people's house key would have to think hard about whether to bring the other party back home

I listened to the recording three times. The first time round, I was shocked. The second time round, I was filled with doubt. The third time round, I started getting impressed.I had spoken those words indeed.Just not on the same day and not in the same context."Connor" was from yesterday's meeting."Withdraw from school" was from me trying to persuade my deskmate not to withdraw from the school club."I'll ruin" was from a class."His reputation" was from my accusation. The amount of editing work was insane. There was a level of craftsmanship evident amidst the intense hatred he harbored against me.After the recording was published, the tables turned once again.Connor also published a photo of his wrist wrapped up in gauze while he was in the hospital. He claimed that he was a victim of cyberbullying and no longer dared to return to school. Many guys who fancied Wanda started scolding me in the comments for being a control freak. They accused me of using my status

The mention of the police made the look on Melissa’s face change."It's just a tiff between classmates. Must you go to such an extent?""Yes."I pointed to my hands that were still shaking."Your son's future prospects are valuable. My life is, too."Melissa was about to say something when the principal, Bernie Shaw, hurried over.He first dispersed the students before inviting both parents to a meeting room.My parents were still overseas and could only attend virtually. Before we stepped into the meeting room, Connor suddenly grabbed my arm."Gerald."His voice was low."Are you bent on destroying me?"I flung his hand away."You're the one who locked the door. You're the one who posted those things. You're the one who snatched away my belongings. How am I suddenly the aggressive one when the police are involved?"He gritted his teeth."I just really like Wanda."There he goes again. The most powerful immunity. It was as though, with that word alone, he could reduce

Although the post was not published, a screenshot of it had spread across the campus.Half an hour later, Connor's mother, Melissa David, rushed to the school. She hugged her son before turning to look at me."Are you the one who bullied Connor?"I looked down at myself. My school uniform was stained with soy milk and filth. My arm had scratches from wood splinters.I still had no idea where my phone, bank card, and house key were.Connor, on the other hand, was dressed in a smart suit, and his hair was still perfectly styled.Who exactly was the bully here? It was a question that was truly a test of one's eyesight.Amy quickly explained everything that had happened.Instead of scolding her son, Melissa looked at Wanda with furrowed brows."Connor had always thought that you had no blood relations with Gerald. Since you know that he likes you, why didn't you make it clear earlier?"Wanda found it ridiculous."How many sentences have I actually spoken to him in total up ti

After the footage was played, Connor's first reaction wasn't to apologize.Instead, he rushed to the control panel and jerked out the cable connected to the screen. The screen went dark, but everyone in the hall had seen everything.Connor held the cable in his hand, his eyes turning red."I was so mad at that time. I have held a torch for Wanda for three years, yet he boasted about her before me daily. I didn't know he had allergies."Horace immediately stepped forward to defend him."It was my idea to lock the door. Connor was just instigated by Gerald."I looked at him, my head cocked to the side."He locked the door while you take the blame. You guys really know how to split the work clearly."Someone in the audience chuckled.Horace flushed red."Quit talking like that. If you hadn't deliberately hidden the fact that you two were siblings, how would Connor have misunderstood?"Some male students who fancied Wanda nodded in agreement. It was my first time realizing tha

The hall was so quiet, only the hum of the projector could be heard.Connor didn't even have time to wipe the look of pure devotion off his face before it stiffened into a hilarious meme.Horace was the first to react."Impossible. You two don't even have the same last name."Wanda cast him a glance."I took my Dad's last name while he took Mom's. Is that against the law?"Horace opened his mouth but couldn't utter a single word.Someone in the audience had already started looking through old posts on the school's social media page."No wonder Gerald can enter the Stewarts' house.""No wonder he has the house key and bank card.""So, that tank top really does belong to his sister?""Goodness, what have we been watching all along?"I held the microphone up and added helpfully, "Pure cotton, three for 89 dollars including shipping."Wanda's face darkened with embarrassment. "Shut up, Gerald.""Oh."It looked like she wanted me to reveal even more details.Connor finally
