Chapter 3

Author: Brandy Branch
There was no comfort or heartache. Instead, I got interrogation and displeasure.

Carla frowned, the impatience in her eyes undisguised. "Max, Fred put a lot of time and energy into preparing for this exhibition. Don't you dare make a scene here."

I looked at her in disbelief. My eyelids trembled, and tears rolled down uncontrollably.

Carla was stunned for a moment, and the displeasure and irritation in her eyes mostly dissipated the moment she saw the tears in mine.

She grabbed my hand and forcefully dragged me out of the exhibition. Then, she opened the car door and pushed me inside.

Bracing herself against the car door, she surrounded me. I struggled to shove her off, but she used the motion to snatch my phone.

"Carla, have you lost your mind? Don't tell me that on the day our son was just born and I was half dead from exhaustion, you were here the whole time accompanying some pretty boy at an art exhibition!"

"Max Hatfield, watch your mouth!"

Carla thrust me roughly into the back seat, then slammed the car door shut and locked it.

My head struck the car door hard, and my stomach cramped with a sharp, twisting pain as dizziness washed over me.

Having just managed to hold myself up, I pulled at the door handle with all my strength.

"Carla, let me out!"

"Two hours." Carla looked down coldly at her watch. "There are still two hours until Fred's exhibition ends. I'll drive you home then. Max, if you don't want to get out at the courthouse, then rein in that stubborn temper of yours. You know I respond to softness, not force."

She turned and walked away. No matter how hard I pounded on the car window, it couldn't soften her heart in the slightest, much less make her turn back and look at me.

I admitted I was afraid that she really didn't want me anymore.

In the late summer, I waited like that under the blazing sun in the car for more than two hours.

Already weak from days of sleepless nights and a severe stomach condition, I felt a violent, twisting cramp in my stomach under the heat. A thick, coppery taste of blood rose in my throat, and it felt like every bit of strength had been sucked out of me.

I watched as the exhibition ended—and how Carla stood beside Fred, accompanying him as he greeted and saw off business partners.

When she finally remembered me and came over to open the car door, she saw me lying quietly in the back seat and thought I'd finally learned to behave.

"Max, you've become much more obedient. Don't worry—since we're married, I'll take care of you. As for Fred, he's nothing more than a painter under me with commercial value. There's no other possibility between us," she said soothingly.

Seeing that I didn't respond, she thought I was still sulking.

"Be good and stop sulking. Shall I go back with you to see our son? I heard Mom say you named him Dominic. It's a very nice name—I like it very much."

She reached out to pull me, only to discover my hands were ice-cold. Blood spilled from the corner of my mouth, and I passed out in the back seat, my face deathly pale.

"Max!"

…

When I woke up again, I found myself lying in a hospital room.

Strangely, the first person I saw this time when I opened my eyes was Carla.

She sat obediently by the bed, peeling an apple while watching the IV drip. Her cheek was flushed red, but an obvious slap mark sat there.

"Max, you're awake? Do you feel uncomfortable anywhere?"

I shook my head weakly. Her sudden gentleness felt so foreign that I thought I had to be dreaming.

For the days I was in the hospital after that, Carla never left my side. She looked after me with great care, right up to the night before I was discharged.

I couldn't find her in the hospital corridor. Following the faint smell of smoke, I found her in the stairwell.

She stood by the window smoking, her brows slightly drawn together as she talked to someone on the phone.

"Max is sick," she said with a sigh. "The doctor said he'd worn his body down, and then the heat in the car set off acute gastric perforation with heavy bleeding. Yeah, it's serious."

Carla took a hard drag on the cigarette and rubbed the space between her brows somewhat irritably.

"More than half his stomach was removed. He has multiple organ failure and complications.

"His health is completely destroyed. From now on, not only will he be unable to do heavy work, but he'll also have to rely on medicine year-round to stay alive."

I stood frozen in place, feeling as if all the blood in my body had solidified.

Carla continued, "My mom said if I don't take care of Max until he's discharged, she'll skin me alive.

"What did I do to deserve being stuck with someone I have to wait on hand and foot? I can't get rid of him, much less cross him."

I shuffled stiffly away from the stairwell.

The wind blew the door shut. By the time Carla turned to look, there was no one left at the stairwell entrance.

The person on the other end of the phone was still saying something.

Carla irritably stubbed out the cigarette and said, "Of course my heart aches for him! I've always thought of Max as family!

"I wish it were me who bled that much, that it were me lying in the hospital instead of him!"

Grandma held my hand and tried to persuade me. "Carla's a big-shot boss. She's never touched a needle and thread in her life. But for you and Dominic, she went and learned to sew a jacket. You can't keep living in the past forever."I nodded, taking it in. But what I understood was something else entirely. At night, I felt the air turn cold. Carla was no longer beside me.I threw on a coat and went outside, where I heard her talking in a lowered voice as she stood in the yard.A man's voice came from the other end of the line. Though he kept his voice low, I could still tell it was Fred.I slowly retreated into the room, leaving Carla undisturbed.More than 20 minutes later, she crept back into the room without making a sound. Afraid her hands were cold, she warmed them before getting into bed and gently hugged me from behind. After coming back from my hometown, Carla had a slightly bigger smile on her face. She felt that after this trip, I was finally being nicer to her. She'd

As I passed by the study, I walked in and turned on the computer like I was possessed.Sure enough, an electronic copy of the divorce papers was still in the computer folder. After I printed a copy and organized it, I picked up Carla's fountain pen and signed my own name. When I returned to the bedroom, Carla sat obediently on the bed, waiting for me.She patted the spot beside her and said, "Come quickly. I paused the movie for you, so you don't have to worry about missing the plot." Once, while we were watching a movie together, I went to the bathroom and begged her to pause it and wait a few minutes for me. But when I came back, she had already finished watching it."Why didn't you wait for me?" I asked her aggrievedly."Why should I wait for you? My time is also precious," she replied with a cold expression. She was never willing to stop for me, nor had she ever shown me gentleness or care. And yet, I stubbornly loved her for so many years.I stood at the bedroom door loo

I calmly withdrew my gaze, noticing a flicker of guilt flash across Ruben's face."Max, you didn't see anything, did you?" he asked.I shook my head. "I was playing a game on my phone, so I didn't see anything. What did you see?""Nothing. I was just thinking it's been so long since we went shopping together. I'm really happy that we get to go on a shopping spree later. Today, I'm definitely going to pick out a handsome outfit for you."Ruben was true to his word. We really did buy a lot of things. My hair had gone too long without proper care, so it had grown a bit dry and unruly.Ruben took me to the studio he trusted most to get my hair done, generously pulling out his VIP card. Then, he took me to a cosmetics counter to buy men's skincare products. When the sales assistant helped me try on a primer, she saw the burn scar at the corner of my forehead."Sir, we recently got a new concealer with especially good coverage. Would you like to try it?"I looked at my face in the m

Carla immediately explained, "Max, it's not what it looks like. I've broken things off with him for good. I said I'd take good care of you and Dominic—""It's okay," I interrupted her urgent explanation. My expression was very calm, and there was no longer the stubborn anger of the past in my eyes. "I'm not angry, nor will I make a scene."Seeing me like this, Carla suddenly panicked. She hurried to me and reached out to grab my wrist, cupping my hand in hers. It was as if she were afraid that if she let go, I would vanish before her eyes."Max, what exactly is wrong with you? You have to believe me. There really was nothing just n—""I believe you." I let her hold my hand. The burn marks on the back of my hand were shocking, but my expression was calm.On the contrary, Carla looked like a madwoman. The burns on the back of my hand seemed to scorch her, and she suddenly withdrew her palm. The next instant, with her eyes rimmed red, she hugged me even tighter.I heard her voi

Dominic was temporarily taken home by Elena.By the time I was discharged from the hospital, he had already grown quite a bit. He fixed his big, round eyes on me, looking as if he hardly knew who I was."I must look terrible right now. I scared you, didn't I?" I held Dominic in my arms. His big eyes were bright as he stared up at me, but he wasn't frightened into crying.Carla helped me pack up my things, then had Dina make the dishes I liked."A new nursery's been set up on the second floor. Max, why don't you go have a look?"I carried Dominic upstairs. The new nursery no longer had any trace of Fred's previous design. Even the overall color scheme was the pastel purple I liked.Dominic liked his new bed very much. A rotating mobile toy for soothing children hung above it. He liked it a lot, but the craftsmanship was a little rough."Mrs. Hatfield made this herself. She was worried about Mr. Dominic coming into contact with the unhygienic stuff sold outside. She sat alone in

"I tore up the divorce papers. Please prepare another one," I said.Carla's hand trembled slightly as she held the spoon. The warm chicken soup spilled onto the bedsheet, and she hurriedly grabbed tissues to wipe it up. But even after wiping it dry, a mark still remained on the sheet."No need to wipe it. Call the nurse in a bit. They can help me change the bedsheet," I said.Because I had stayed in the fire for too long, my voice was a little hoarse.I wanted to find a mirror, but I still couldn't get out of bed for the time being. Still, my fingers found the bandage at my temple. I figured there'd be a small scar there. The cut on the web between my fingers had already been bandaged. It still hurt from time to time, and my hand had no strength."It's my fault. I didn't hold the spoon steadily," Carla said gently. She ladled another spoonful of chicken soup and held it to my lips. "Didn't you say before that you wanted to drink the chicken soup I made?"I got up early s
