Chapter 2

Author: Brandy Branch
Half a year ago already seemed like such a distant time.

On the eve of Carla's due date, she insisted on going on a business trip out of town after receiving a phone call.

I desperately tried to stop her. Even if she ran me over with her car, I still refused to give up.

Sure enough, her water broke halfway there.

I was frantic. After getting her into the delivery room, I stayed outside for three whole hours.

After giving birth to Dominic, not only did she forcibly discharge herself the next day and dump Dominic on me, but she didn't come home for the entire week after that.

To care for the newborn Dominic, I stayed up day and night, exhausting myself. Coupled with a severe stomach illness I already had, I vomited in the hospital bathroom until I was practically throwing up bile.

I leaned by the door to recover for two minutes, only to hear my mother-in-law, Susan Middleton, chastising Carla. She spoke in a lowered voice in the hallway just on the other side of the door.

"Carla, how can you even call yourself a mother? Max hasn't slept for days taking care of Dominic. What are you even doing out there that you can't come back and see him?

"Do you have any idea how much Max has suffered? Aren't you even a little curious about what your own son looks like?"

The other end of the phone was silent for two seconds, as if Carla were thinking about what Dominic looked like.

My hand tightened on the door handle. I was also quite curious what our son was supposed to look like in Carla's mind.

Suddenly, Carla spoke up. "Max has big eyes and is handsome, so our son is bound to be good-looking too. I just hope he doesn't end up with Max's temper and extreme personality."

Her tone was airy and light, as if mentioning me was like bringing up a nuisance she couldn't be bothered with.

"Mom, you're the one who likes Max, not me. You're also the one who forced me to marry him and have kids. I don't like Max, and I can't bring myself to feel much love for the baby either.

"Before I even gave birth, hadn't you already hired the finest nanny and a fancy nutritionist to prepare meals? What else do you need me for?"

I stood frozen at the door, my heart sinking as though it had been plunged into the sea.

After Dominic's sip-and-see party, I still couldn't help but drive to where Carla was on her business trip. It was just in the next city over.

I heard she had signed a male painter and was holding an art exhibition by the sea.

I stood in front of the largest painting on display in the gallery. It was the side profile of a person, dressed in a dark gray coat.

Behind her frameless glasses, her eyes were deep and gloomy, and there was a brooding weight between her brows that seemed impossible to dispel.

I stood dumbfounded in place.

It wasn't just because I recognized that the person in the painting was Carla, but also because I discovered that the painting was titled "Thinking of Carla", and the painter was Fred Reilly.

I remembered his name.

Carla had a blacked-out group photo tucked in the book she often read, and the name on the back was none other than Fred Reilly.

I stood before the huge portrait. The Carla in the painting was almost as tall as I was.

It felt like a giant hand was squeezing my heart, and the sounds around me gradually faded away.

I heard footsteps stop behind me.

I forced my utterly exhausted body—worn down from days without sleep—to turn around.

What little color was left in my pale face drained away at once, and just like that I fell into Carla's line of sight.

"Who told you I was here?" she asked.

Grandma held my hand and tried to persuade me. "Carla's a big-shot boss. She's never touched a needle and thread in her life. But for you and Dominic, she went and learned to sew a jacket. You can't keep living in the past forever."I nodded, taking it in. But what I understood was something else entirely. At night, I felt the air turn cold. Carla was no longer beside me.I threw on a coat and went outside, where I heard her talking in a lowered voice as she stood in the yard.A man's voice came from the other end of the line. Though he kept his voice low, I could still tell it was Fred.I slowly retreated into the room, leaving Carla undisturbed.More than 20 minutes later, she crept back into the room without making a sound. Afraid her hands were cold, she warmed them before getting into bed and gently hugged me from behind. After coming back from my hometown, Carla had a slightly bigger smile on her face. She felt that after this trip, I was finally being nicer to her. She'd

As I passed by the study, I walked in and turned on the computer like I was possessed.Sure enough, an electronic copy of the divorce papers was still in the computer folder. After I printed a copy and organized it, I picked up Carla's fountain pen and signed my own name. When I returned to the bedroom, Carla sat obediently on the bed, waiting for me.She patted the spot beside her and said, "Come quickly. I paused the movie for you, so you don't have to worry about missing the plot." Once, while we were watching a movie together, I went to the bathroom and begged her to pause it and wait a few minutes for me. But when I came back, she had already finished watching it."Why didn't you wait for me?" I asked her aggrievedly."Why should I wait for you? My time is also precious," she replied with a cold expression. She was never willing to stop for me, nor had she ever shown me gentleness or care. And yet, I stubbornly loved her for so many years.I stood at the bedroom door loo

I calmly withdrew my gaze, noticing a flicker of guilt flash across Ruben's face."Max, you didn't see anything, did you?" he asked.I shook my head. "I was playing a game on my phone, so I didn't see anything. What did you see?""Nothing. I was just thinking it's been so long since we went shopping together. I'm really happy that we get to go on a shopping spree later. Today, I'm definitely going to pick out a handsome outfit for you."Ruben was true to his word. We really did buy a lot of things. My hair had gone too long without proper care, so it had grown a bit dry and unruly.Ruben took me to the studio he trusted most to get my hair done, generously pulling out his VIP card. Then, he took me to a cosmetics counter to buy men's skincare products. When the sales assistant helped me try on a primer, she saw the burn scar at the corner of my forehead."Sir, we recently got a new concealer with especially good coverage. Would you like to try it?"I looked at my face in the m

Carla immediately explained, "Max, it's not what it looks like. I've broken things off with him for good. I said I'd take good care of you and Dominic—""It's okay," I interrupted her urgent explanation. My expression was very calm, and there was no longer the stubborn anger of the past in my eyes. "I'm not angry, nor will I make a scene."Seeing me like this, Carla suddenly panicked. She hurried to me and reached out to grab my wrist, cupping my hand in hers. It was as if she were afraid that if she let go, I would vanish before her eyes."Max, what exactly is wrong with you? You have to believe me. There really was nothing just n—""I believe you." I let her hold my hand. The burn marks on the back of my hand were shocking, but my expression was calm.On the contrary, Carla looked like a madwoman. The burns on the back of my hand seemed to scorch her, and she suddenly withdrew her palm. The next instant, with her eyes rimmed red, she hugged me even tighter.I heard her voi

Dominic was temporarily taken home by Elena.By the time I was discharged from the hospital, he had already grown quite a bit. He fixed his big, round eyes on me, looking as if he hardly knew who I was."I must look terrible right now. I scared you, didn't I?" I held Dominic in my arms. His big eyes were bright as he stared up at me, but he wasn't frightened into crying.Carla helped me pack up my things, then had Dina make the dishes I liked."A new nursery's been set up on the second floor. Max, why don't you go have a look?"I carried Dominic upstairs. The new nursery no longer had any trace of Fred's previous design. Even the overall color scheme was the pastel purple I liked.Dominic liked his new bed very much. A rotating mobile toy for soothing children hung above it. He liked it a lot, but the craftsmanship was a little rough."Mrs. Hatfield made this herself. She was worried about Mr. Dominic coming into contact with the unhygienic stuff sold outside. She sat alone in

"I tore up the divorce papers. Please prepare another one," I said.Carla's hand trembled slightly as she held the spoon. The warm chicken soup spilled onto the bedsheet, and she hurriedly grabbed tissues to wipe it up. But even after wiping it dry, a mark still remained on the sheet."No need to wipe it. Call the nurse in a bit. They can help me change the bedsheet," I said.Because I had stayed in the fire for too long, my voice was a little hoarse.I wanted to find a mirror, but I still couldn't get out of bed for the time being. Still, my fingers found the bandage at my temple. I figured there'd be a small scar there. The cut on the web between my fingers had already been bandaged. It still hurt from time to time, and my hand had no strength."It's my fault. I didn't hold the spoon steadily," Carla said gently. She ladled another spoonful of chicken soup and held it to my lips. "Didn't you say before that you wanted to drink the chicken soup I made?"I got up early s
