MasukWhen my husband accompanies his childhood sweetheart to the vet to treat her pet fish, my son accidentally spills his drink on her. My husband watches as his childhood sweetheart's eyes redden. Then, he slaps my son hard and throws a stack of cash at him. "This is your chance to make up for your mistakes. Buy Wendy a dress—make sure it's white!" My son dries his tears while holding onto the money. He roams the streets, searching for a white dress in the middle of the night. When he finally finds one, he ends up getting beaten to death by some drunk hooligans. Even in death, he clutches the bloodied skirt tightly. I burst into tears of despair as I hold onto his body and call my husband over a dozen times. However, he's too busy with his childhood sweetheart's fish. He blocks my number. When he finally calls me back, he sounds icy and angry. "Wendy is still waiting for that dress! Where has the little brat gone to? Can't he even handle such a simple task?"

The spoon in Nora’s hand fell just like that. The sound was quite disturbing to the other patrons in the restaurant where they were meeting that afternoon. For a few moments, Nora did not move. But she could not afford to lose control.
Slowly, even though she had to feel around for what was in front of her, including the cup of lemon tea she had ordered, she eventually managed to grasp the handle of the cup.
“The first thing you say to me after five years without a word is this ridiculousness, Keith?” Nora asked, trying to remain calm. She calmly took a sip of her tea.
In front of her, although she could not directly see what her stepbrother, Keith Laurent, looked like, there was no way Nora could forget his voice and tone. How could Nora forget Keith, who had grown up with her for more than twenty years? Even though the man now sitting before her was her stepbrother, in Nora’s eyes, Keith was still the younger brother she loved and was proud of.
“I’m telling you the truth.” Keith shifted slightly in his seat. “Although I’m quite shocked by your condition right now, but ... are you really blind to the point that you can’t sense what’s happening?”
Nora put the cup down harshly. Once again, it made a sound that was quite disturbing and drew attention.
“Watch what you say, Keith.”
“I have no intention of deceiving you. Not even by saying something ridiculous like what you just accused me of.” Keith knew how difficult it was to tell his stepsister something this insane.
“And where did you get that idea?” Nora asked calmly. She had already regained control of herself.
“I have proof,” Keith said. “At first, I only wanted to find out why my fiancée suddenly went to South City.”
Nora frowned slightly. “Your ... fiancée?”
“Yes.” Keith let out a long sigh. “I intended to give you an invitation when the engagement party was held. I ... am Catherine Beaumont’s fiancé, Nora.”
Nora slowly shook her head. “We haven’t seen each other for five years, Keith. There are many things I don’t know about your life.”
“Same goes for me.” Keith fell silent for a moment. “After you got married, I was busy with my studies. And I was so shocked to learn that you’re in this condition, Nora.”
Nora did not answer.
“Catherine said she had some business in South City. At first, I didn’t think much of it because our relationship hadn’t been officially announced yet. However, she stayed here for too long and became increasingly difficult to reach.”
“So you came to South City to look for her?”
“At first, yes.” Keith leaned back in his chair. “When I tried to find out where she was, I discovered that she often met with a man named Javier.”
Nora fell silent.
“I thought it was just a coincidence that they had the same name,” Keith said with a quiet laugh. “I never expected that man to be your husband. I also didn’t know Catherine was Javier’s childhood best friend.”
Keith drew a deep breath. “At first, I didn’t believe there was anything between them. I just thought they happened to meet often. But the more I looked into it, the more things started to feel strange.”
“Then?”
“Until one day, I saw them myself.”
Nora swallowed. “Where?”
“Meridien East City Hotel.” Keith’s voice grew heavier.
“I saw Catherine enter the hotel. A short while later, Javier arrived. I followed them because by then, my suspicions had become too great to ignore.”
Without realizing it, Nora’s hands clenched tightly.
“And what I saw afterward made it impossible for me to deny it anymore.”
Keith paused for a moment.
“I saw them leave together. After that, I started gathering evidence. Photos, messages, and several other things that showed their relationship.” Keith continued telling Nora everything about their relationship.
Nora listened to everything until he finished. She did not interrupt Keith even once. But after her brother stopped speaking, Nora simply took a deep breath.
“I love Javier, Keith.”
Keith fell silent.
“And that love comes with trust.” Nora’s voice remained calm, though there was a slight tremor in it. “I’ve been married to him for five years. I know what Javier is like. I know how he treats me. I know how he loves me.”
“Nora—”
“I don’t believe everything you’re saying. And Catherine? There’s no way she could be like that.”
Keith was stunned. “But what I said—”
“Even if you bring all that evidence to me, I still believe Javier could never do something like this.”
Several seconds passed in silence before Keith laughed. It was not a happy laugh, but a short laugh that sounded like someone who no longer knew what else to say.
“You really are blind.”
Nora lifted her face. “Keith, I warn you.”
“I’m not insulting your condition, Nora.” Keith leaned forward slightly. “I’m saying that you can’t see what’s happening right in front of you.”
Nora growled under her breath.
Keith stared at his sister’s face for quite a while before finally saying, “And there’s one more thing that puzzles me.”
“What?”
“Why haven’t you had eye surgery?”
Nora fell silent. “Surgery?”
“Yes. Eye surgery.” Keith slowly shook his head. “Has South City run out of competent eye doctors that my sister has to live like this for six months?”
Nora did not answer immediately. “I don’t understand what you mean.”
Keith stared at Nora’s eyes, hidden behind her sunglasses. “You can still see, Nora.”
Nora froze.
“Your eye condition is not something that can’t be treated. There is still a very good chance that your vision can be restored.”
For the first time since the meeting began, Nora was unable to answer.
Keith put several documents back into the folder he had brought with him.
“I still have all the evidence regarding Javier and Catherine. If you still want to believe your husband after seeing it, that’s your choice.”
He stood up from his seat.
“But if you want to know what is really happening with your eyes, contact me. My number is still the same. You still have it, don’t you?”
Soon after, Louis fell ill with a high fever that wouldn't subside.I took him to the hospital. While we waited for the test results, he was visibly anxious and unsettled.I silently observed the fear on his face. As I had expected, the diagnosis came back positive—Louis had contracted HIV.When I told him the news, he collapsed. His legs buckled beneath him. He seemed like a frightened animal, cornered and hopeless."This is impossible. I've only slept with Wendy…" He suddenly trailed off, as a horrifying thought struck him.I watched the expression of growing despair on his face and couldn't help but smile to myself. His illness was indeed contracted from Wendy, but I was the one who bribed the person who performed her plastic surgery to pass it on to her.But I wasn't sure if Wendy had realized she was already doomed.Feigning concern, I tended to Louis' daily needs. At this point, he was physically and mentally exhausted. He gradually became completely dependent on me, to
Wendy cried so hard that she was gasping for breath. "Louis, you promised to love me forever! Are you dumping me now?"Louis sighed. His eyes were filled with guilt as he looked at her. "Wendy, we can't be together anymore. Every time I see you, I think of Zane."Wendy threw herself into his arms without a second thought. "I don't want anything from you. I just want you to stay with me, Louis. We grew up together. I really can't let you go.""If you didn't want his money, why did you ask me for 200 thousand dollars?" I interrupted her with a smile. Both Louis and Wendy froze. Wendy immediately denied it with a shrill voice. "You're lying! I never asked for your money! You're talking nonsense to slander me!"I smirked and pulled out a recorder pen from my bag. I'd secretly recorded our conversation the day I gave her the money. In the recording, her voice was filled with flattery as she said, "I don't even like Louis. His family's poor, and his mom's cheap. Honestly, Louis is luck
As I watched Wendy leave, a meaningful smile played on my lips. Two months later, Wendy returned. This time, Louis no longer rejected her as harshly. However, he was clearly taken aback by her towering nose, swollen, misshapen eyes, and thick, full lips.Wendy thought Louis was moved by her, so she hurriedly poured her heart out, "I missed you so much. Since you're afraid of my old face, I'm willing to change for you."But what she didn't understand was that, for a man like Louis, his love would fade with her allure. What was once a fairly delicate and charming face had now become disfigured, resembling something out of a horror tale. Louis would surely cast her aside soon enough. But he wouldn't do it immediately. He'd need to maintain his image of being a devoted man.I only needed to wait and watch as their relationship slowly fell apart and then collect the rewards I sought. As expected, Wendy made a scene during an event Louis took me to."Why didn't you bring me? You al
My voice grew even more ethereal as I said, "Wendy's a mother. Why didn't she stop you when you had Zane go out and buy that dress?"Why couldn't it wait until the next day? It was so dark and cold that night. Zane must have been terrified when he died. Even during his last moments, he'd clutched that white dress so tightly, hoping you would praise him.""Enough!" Louis shouted, his voice trembling. Consumed by guilt, he slammed his fist against his own head.I let his head fall to my shoulder, watching him torment himself with cold satisfaction.Great. The more he regretted it, the more it pleased me. This was exactly what I needed in order to proceed with my plan.Half a month later, Wendy finally realized something was wrong. Louis had become strangely resolute.Once he'd connected Wendy to Zane's death, he could no longer look at her without being dragged into the abyss of his own remorse. He was so selfish. His every feeling and action revolved only around him. Even the wom

This whole relationship had been a mistake from the start. Louis was a student of my dad, Tyler Harrison.Because Louis was poor, Dad always used white lies to bring him over for dinner at our house.Gradually, I got to know him better.Dad recognized Louis's potential and did everything he could
It had been two full days since Zane's funeral, and I hadn't slept a wink. My head throbbed, and my eyes were bloodshot.I glanced at the goldfish on the table. Louis noticed my gaze and sneered. "Wendy's a caring person. Someone like you wouldn't understand."His words suddenly made me remember s
I had just finished handling my son Zane Graham's funeral arrangements when the number I had dialed dozens of times without an answer finally called back.My husband, Louis Graham, said irritably, "Where's Zane? That idiot can't even handle something as simple as buying a darn dress."A wave of ab
