Chapter 2

Autor: Reggae Spirit
Scott had put on his pants in annoyance and grabbed my chin to say, "You need to know your place, Sophie. You were only able to marry into the Jameson family because you were pregnant. Otherwise, you'd be nothing to me."

That was when something inside me broke. Since then, I no longer made a fuss or caused any scenes. I would even make sure to give him space whenever he brought a woman home. It was not me giving in to my fate. I just understood the rules of the game now.

I leaned over to kiss Connor's soft forehead. He smelled heavenly. His milk-like scent was the only clean scent in this house. I whispered so softly in his ear that it sounded like a sigh, "Don't be impatient, my sweet boy. Everything the Jamesons own will soon be ours."

It was my in-laws' 70th birthday party, and they had reserved the top floor of Cloverton's most expensive hotel for the celebration. I attended the party in the champagne-colored dress Scott wanted me to wear. I was supposed to stand by Scott's side, but Rita had taken my place instead.

She walked into the hall, wearing a white dress that I had wanted but could not bear to buy. Everyone's attention turned to her. "Sorry I'm late, Scott," Rita said sweetly.

Scott kissed her on the cheek. "It's fine. The woman of the hour has to make a grand entrance." My in-laws frowned but said nothing. Several of the family's uncles exchanged knowing glances that were either sarcastic, taunting, or amused by the drama.

My seat was at the very end of the long table, next to several distant relatives who had little to do with the family. After going around toasting several tables, Rita came over to me with a wine glass in her hand. She spoke crisply and loud enough for everyone to hear, "Can you pour me a glass of warm water, Mrs. Jameson? I'm not feeling well."

Everyone turned to look at me, except Scott, who was too busy slicing up his steak to even glance at me. I put my wine glass down and said, "There are waiters behind you."

Rita's smile froze, but she quickly composed herself. "I'd like you to pour me the water."

I replied calmly, "If you'd like something to drink, you can get your boyfriend to help you." A few chuckles could be heard around us, and Rita's eyes turned red instantly.

"Scott…" She turned to where he was sitting, sounding like she was about to cry.

He finally stood up. "Why are you being so petty when all she's asking for is a glass of water, Sophie?" I stared into his cold eyes, got up to pour her a glass of water, and pushed it toward her.

Rita did not accept the water as she cried. "All I wanted was to get close to her, Scott."

Scott's face fell right away. "Apologize!"

The entire hall turned silent. My mother-in-law looked away as my father-in-law sighed. All I did was stand where I was. Everyone's gaze fell onto me. Some looked at me with pity, while others looked at me with taunting, disdain, and even with glee at seeing me in trouble.

One year ago on this day, it was at this very same venue that Scott had held my hand while introducing me to everyone, "This is my wife, Sophie Rivers." He looked like he was proud of me then, even though it was just a little.

"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have let you get the waiter yourself."

The party ended on a bad note. That night, Scott came home reeking of alcohol. He slammed the divorce papers on the table, lit a cigarette, and said, "Rita wants to have a family. It isn't easy for a young woman like her to survive in this world. Sign the papers."

I looked at the papers and was reminded of the night he proposed to me. "Marry me, Sophie. I promise to give you happiness for the rest of your life." He had looked serious about his promise, even though it was fleeting.

"Connor leaves with me."

Scott laughed coldly. " You can't afford to bring him up."

I stood up, and despite being a head shorter than him, I made sure to stand up straight. "Then I'll see you in court."

Scott's smile vanished. He stared at me with mixed emotions in his eyes before he ended up bursting with laughter. "Fine. If you insist on humiliating yourself, go ahead. You can't win this, Sophie. The Jamesons have a team of lawyers working for us. What can a doctor like you do to fight against me?"

He closed the door behind him as it started pouring outside. The rain splattered against the windows, its sound echoing throughout the house.

"Mom," Connor suddenly asked, "do you hate Dad?"I was eating when he asked the question, and my hand stopped moving. "I used to," I answered honestly, "but not anymore.""Why?""Hating someone takes up too much energy," I said as I poured him a drink. "I have you, my career, and my freedom. I don't have time to hate someone unimportant."Connor nodded as if he understood what I said. We enjoyed hot food inside while the city lights sparkled brightly in the night outside. The city stayed as glamorous yet as cold as ever as life continued each and every day.As for us, we had made the perfect lives for ourselves. When Connor was twenty-five, he officially took over Jameson Corporation. The ceremony for his appointment was very grand. Every renowned personality in Cloverton attended the event. I was seated in the first row as I watched him deliver his speech with ease. He was already displaying the charisma of a powerful leader. After the ceremony finished, I was the first person

Rita got almost no alimony. The prenuptial agreement was very clear that she would get nothing in the divorce. She tried to make a fuss over it, but the Jamesons issued her a warning. If she continued creating trouble for them, they would send those pictures and the medical report to her parents back in her hometown. Rita vanished after that, as if she never existed.Scott's condition kept relapsing. The herpes virus's damage to his immune system was a long-term one, and in addition to that, he had been scarred mentally and emotionally, which broke him down. When he was absent from the board meeting for the third time, his parents came looking for me. This time, they did not come to see me at the hospital, but in the small apartment that I rented. His mother was no longer the proud woman she usually portrayed and even seemed abashed. "Sophie, I know we let you down," Scott's father was the first to speak up. "But the Jamesons cannot fall. We're getting old, and Scott's condition is…"

Scott's mother stumbled backward, and his father quickly grabbed onto her. She started looking at Rita like she was trash. "Get a divorce," Scott's father finally said hoarsely but firmly. "You should get a divorce today.""Dad!" Rita screamed. "But I'm pregnant with—""Pregnant with whose baby?" I interrupted her. "Do you need me to arrange a checkup for you with our gynaecologist? Or do you mean to say that you're pregnant with Scott's baby?"Rita opened her mouth, but no words came out of it. "You know better than anyone else that you're not pregnant with Scott's baby." I took a step closer and lowered my voice. "You knew he couldn't get you pregnant from the first day you started seducing him, didn't you? That's why you were brazen enough to sleep around with other men."The look in Rita's eyes betrayed her. She knew about this a long time ago."Get lost." Scott's mother pointed at the elevator. "You won't get a cent from the Jamesons."Rita wanted to say something, but sec

I looked up at Scott. "The Jamesons' foundation is now tied to my son. Either you sign the papers and guarantee Connor's right to his inheritance in the future by making me a shareholder, or you reject my request and watch your relatives eat your family alive."Scott's fingers trembled."I'll give you three days to think about this." I pushed the papers to him. "Meanwhile, I have a gift for you." I took out another folder from my drawer, which contained many pictures of Rita entering and leaving hotels with different men. The timeline of those pictures spanned two years, and the last page contained a hospital medical report. 'A high risk of being HPV positive, accompanied by a herpes virus infection'.Scott's eyes widened. "Your pure, naive, precious little lover who came from a poor family…" I said slowly as I watched him gradually break down. "Before she knew you, she was a regular at an exclusive club in Cloverton, and she continues to frequent it even after marrying you. By

Scott stared at the envelope, and his fingers froze for several seconds before reaching out for it. He opened the envelope very slowly, as if it were a ticking time bomb. He quickly scanned the medical jargon on the first page of the report, and his gaze eventually settled on the summary column.'Severe asthenozoospermia. Sperm survival rate is below 1%, resulting in near-zero natural conception probability.'The report crumpled from Scott's tightening grip. "What does this mean?" He looked up at me in disbelief, a tinge of deep fear in his eyes. "Connor is…""He's your son," I replied calmly. "I deleted that page from our pre-marital medical report." There was dead silence in the room. The sunlight shone through the window blinds, casting shadows on portions of Scott's face. I saw him gulp as sweat covered his forehead. "Why?" His voice was hoarse."Because I loved you then." I looked at him like he was a stranger. "I couldn't bear for you to find out about this."Scott stood u

I looked at my small luggage bag, which contained only a few pieces of clothing and my medical license. "I have enough for now," I said softly while looking out the window. "Did you know, Chloe? Sometimes you have to give up everything to get what you really want in life." Chloe sniffled. "I just hope you won't regret your decision."I would never regret it, because I had taken away the only heir to the Jamesons' fortune and legacy. Many things could change in two years. Connor and I were now living in a small apartment in East Cloverton. I would take him to kindergarten during the day and then head to the hospital for work. When nighttime came, I would cook and play with him, then tuck him into bed. Life was hard, but it was peaceful.Scott and Rita got married three months after our divorce. It was a grand wedding, described by the media as 'a celebration of true love'. In their wedding photo, Rita wore a gown worth millions, while Scott looked at her tenderly, his hand resting
