Chapter 4

Autor: Reggae Spirit
I looked at my small luggage bag, which contained only a few pieces of clothing and my medical license. "I have enough for now," I said softly while looking out the window. "Did you know, Chloe? Sometimes you have to give up everything to get what you really want in life."

Chloe sniffled. "I just hope you won't regret your decision."

I would never regret it, because I had taken away the only heir to the Jamesons' fortune and legacy.

Many things could change in two years. Connor and I were now living in a small apartment in East Cloverton. I would take him to kindergarten during the day and then head to the hospital for work. When nighttime came, I would cook and play with him, then tuck him into bed. Life was hard, but it was peaceful.

Scott and Rita got married three months after our divorce. It was a grand wedding, described by the media as 'a celebration of true love'. In their wedding photo, Rita wore a gown worth millions, while Scott looked at her tenderly, his hand resting on her waist. It was a tenderness that I had not seen for a long time.

Rita could not wait to get pregnant after their wedding. She thought that having a child would cement her position as Mrs. Jameson, so she could finally celebrate her victory over me, the ex-wife.

She constantly posted pregnancy supplements on her social media with the caption: [Looking forward to having our future baby!]

Comments would pour in with blessings and flattering words, but all I did was smile. I never reacted to her posts.

A year went by, and Rita still had not gotten pregnant. The Jamesons started to get anxious. My former mother-in-law started to hint at a grandchild both openly and privately, and Scott tried to play his part by quitting smoking and drinking. However, another year passed by, and Rita still could not get pregnant.

Rita began visiting the most expensive private hospital in Cloverton regularly for full health checkups, but the results were always the same. She was normal and healthy, yet she was still failing to get pregnant. Even Scott started to get anxious about it.

The Jamesons had only one son, and his parents had been looking forward to a second grandchild. His mother was especially insistent and constantly pressured them for one. What was even stranger about the situation was that none of Scott's kept lovers managed to get pregnant either.

Rumors started to spread like wildfire. Scott scoffed when he first heard them. Scott had conducted a paternity test when Connor was born, and the results confirmed they were father and son. How could he be the one with the health issue?

However, his relatives began looking at him strangely during family gatherings, and one late night, Scott's father confronted him in the study with an ultimatum. He said grimly, "Scott, the Jamesons can't have only one child. You should look into those rumors and make everyone shut up." That night, Scott stayed in his study alone the entire night.

When I received my department's call, I was preparing breakfast for Connor. "Dr. Rivers, we have a patient in the VIP room asking for you. It's Mr. Jameson from the Jameson Corporation."

I put down the spatula I was using to fry an egg and replied, "All right. I'll be there in thirty minutes." When I arrived at the hospital, Scott was already waiting for me in the consultation room.

He was seated across from me with his back straightened, as if trying to maintain the last of his dignity in front of me. "I want a semen analysis done on me. Run every test you have." His voice was hoarse as he got straight to the point.

I nodded and turned on my computer to enter the request. "Is this urgent?"

"Yes, it is."

The checkup lasted the entire day, with me personally checking every procedure. When the samples were sent for testing, my colleague working in the laboratory asked me in a whisper, "Dr. Rivers, isn't Mr. Jameson your…"

"He's my ex-husband," I replied calmly.

The report came out three days later. When I entered the consultation room with the sealed envelope, Scott was already waiting for me. There were dark rings beneath his eyes. "Tell me the results." He was direct, but his fingers gripped his knees nervously.

I did not reply right away. All I did was place the envelope on the desk and push it toward him. "You should read it for yourself."

"Mom," Connor suddenly asked, "do you hate Dad?"I was eating when he asked the question, and my hand stopped moving. "I used to," I answered honestly, "but not anymore.""Why?""Hating someone takes up too much energy," I said as I poured him a drink. "I have you, my career, and my freedom. I don't have time to hate someone unimportant."Connor nodded as if he understood what I said. We enjoyed hot food inside while the city lights sparkled brightly in the night outside. The city stayed as glamorous yet as cold as ever as life continued each and every day.As for us, we had made the perfect lives for ourselves. When Connor was twenty-five, he officially took over Jameson Corporation. The ceremony for his appointment was very grand. Every renowned personality in Cloverton attended the event. I was seated in the first row as I watched him deliver his speech with ease. He was already displaying the charisma of a powerful leader. After the ceremony finished, I was the first person

  • My Son Is His Only Heir   Chapter 8

Rita got almost no alimony. The prenuptial agreement was very clear that she would get nothing in the divorce. She tried to make a fuss over it, but the Jamesons issued her a warning. If she continued creating trouble for them, they would send those pictures and the medical report to her parents back in her hometown. Rita vanished after that, as if she never existed.Scott's condition kept relapsing. The herpes virus's damage to his immune system was a long-term one, and in addition to that, he had been scarred mentally and emotionally, which broke him down. When he was absent from the board meeting for the third time, his parents came looking for me. This time, they did not come to see me at the hospital, but in the small apartment that I rented. His mother was no longer the proud woman she usually portrayed and even seemed abashed. "Sophie, I know we let you down," Scott's father was the first to speak up. "But the Jamesons cannot fall. We're getting old, and Scott's condition is…"

Scott's mother stumbled backward, and his father quickly grabbed onto her. She started looking at Rita like she was trash. "Get a divorce," Scott's father finally said hoarsely but firmly. "You should get a divorce today.""Dad!" Rita screamed. "But I'm pregnant with—""Pregnant with whose baby?" I interrupted her. "Do you need me to arrange a checkup for you with our gynaecologist? Or do you mean to say that you're pregnant with Scott's baby?"Rita opened her mouth, but no words came out of it. "You know better than anyone else that you're not pregnant with Scott's baby." I took a step closer and lowered my voice. "You knew he couldn't get you pregnant from the first day you started seducing him, didn't you? That's why you were brazen enough to sleep around with other men."The look in Rita's eyes betrayed her. She knew about this a long time ago."Get lost." Scott's mother pointed at the elevator. "You won't get a cent from the Jamesons."Rita wanted to say something, but sec

I looked up at Scott. "The Jamesons' foundation is now tied to my son. Either you sign the papers and guarantee Connor's right to his inheritance in the future by making me a shareholder, or you reject my request and watch your relatives eat your family alive."Scott's fingers trembled."I'll give you three days to think about this." I pushed the papers to him. "Meanwhile, I have a gift for you." I took out another folder from my drawer, which contained many pictures of Rita entering and leaving hotels with different men. The timeline of those pictures spanned two years, and the last page contained a hospital medical report. 'A high risk of being HPV positive, accompanied by a herpes virus infection'.Scott's eyes widened. "Your pure, naive, precious little lover who came from a poor family…" I said slowly as I watched him gradually break down. "Before she knew you, she was a regular at an exclusive club in Cloverton, and she continues to frequent it even after marrying you. By

Scott stared at the envelope, and his fingers froze for several seconds before reaching out for it. He opened the envelope very slowly, as if it were a ticking time bomb. He quickly scanned the medical jargon on the first page of the report, and his gaze eventually settled on the summary column.'Severe asthenozoospermia. Sperm survival rate is below 1%, resulting in near-zero natural conception probability.'The report crumpled from Scott's tightening grip. "What does this mean?" He looked up at me in disbelief, a tinge of deep fear in his eyes. "Connor is…""He's your son," I replied calmly. "I deleted that page from our pre-marital medical report." There was dead silence in the room. The sunlight shone through the window blinds, casting shadows on portions of Scott's face. I saw him gulp as sweat covered his forehead. "Why?" His voice was hoarse."Because I loved you then." I looked at him like he was a stranger. "I couldn't bear for you to find out about this."Scott stood u
