Chapter 2

Author: Perfect Timing
The last time around, the news had made me drop my phone. My legs had gone weak with fear while my mind went completely blank. I was too shaken to think with clarity.

By the time I found the livestream, I was already in Asteria. I immediately turned back, but it was still too late.

Billy had viciously dragged my name through the mud on camera while Greg and Lori backed up every lie he told.

“Dad, don’t blame Mom. I was just too weak to handle the stress. I could never become the perfect son she wanted me to be.”

Billy had pulled up his sleeve and revealed wounds made with makeup and fake blood.

“I wanted to get perfect grades too. It’s not like I wanted to be beaten, but I’m just not smart enough. I just can’t do it!”

The viewers immediately felt a wave of sympathy for him when they saw the bloody wounds.

[Oh my God! Whoever did that went way too far.]

[People who can’t control their emotions shouldn’t be raising children.]

[Before demanding perfect grades from her son, maybe she should ask whether she could ever manage that herself.]

The moment Greg saw the fake wounds, he had delivered an Oscar-worthy performance. He had covered his mouth in disbelief as tears spilled from his eyes.

Greg’s face had been soaked with tears as he pleaded hoarsely for Billy to get down from the window.

“Billy, please get down! Stop scaring me. If anything happens to you, I won’t be able to go on either. I’m begging you. Please get down from there!”

“No, Dad. I’ve been a terrible son. I’m so sorry!” Billy clenched his jaw as though he had finally made up his mind about something.

“Mom has been having an affair with Mr. Scott for a long time. Whenever you weren’t home, she’d bring him over. She even threatened me into keeping it a secret. I’m sorry, Dad. I was too scared to tell you. Will you please forgive me? At least then I can die in peace.”

Greg had appeared so stunned by the revelation that he could not utter a word.

When his father remained silent, Billy had cried out, “I’ve been a terrible son! It’s only right if you can’t forgive me!”

As he spoke, he leaned farther out of the window and looked as though he might fall at any moment.

Greg had finally snapped out of his daze and hurriedly shouted, “I forgive you! You silly boy, none of this was ever a burden a child should’ve had to carry. Please just come down!”

At that moment, Lori, who had been standing silently nearby, finally spoke. “Billy, come down. From now on, I’ll protect you.”

Her words seemed to serve as a reminder. Billy cast a quick, subtle glance at the inflatable rescue cushion already positioned below, then delivered his final grand declaration.

“Mom, I know you have AIDS. If there’s a next life, I hope you’re never my mother again!”

With that, he threw himself from the window.

Greg had let out a few guttural howls toward the window before conveniently falling unconscious.

By the time I returned, it was already too late.

I had become the most hated woman on the internet. I tried to tell my side of the story online.

However, the people had said: Your son would rather die than keep your secret. You’re obviously the problem.

[I can’t believe a mother could be this evil. You’re the one who deserves to die, not your son.]

The relentless online abuse drove me into a deep depression. Taking advantage of my dazed and broken state, Greg had tricked me into drinking a glass of poisoned milk.

Snapping back to the present, I feigned shock as I said to Lori, “What? That’s impossible! You’re lying!”

“Billy is livestreaming right now. See for yourself!”

Lori sent me the link to the livestream. I opened it and saw that there were already several thousand viewers in the chat room.

I coldly took note of the numbers with mechanical efficiency and continued upstairs to an electronic store on the upper floor. I bought the latest model gaming console. I also asked the sales associate for some recommendations of their most popular games.

“I can return these if my son doesn’t like them, right?”

On the day of the livestream, I called Billy and Greg over.I placed the DNA test results in front of them. “Take a look.”Greg was smiling. “What is this? Why all the mystery?”I said nothing and simply smiled. I turned on the television and put Lori’s livestream on the screen.“I want to apologize to my sister. She has always been a wonderful sister, a devoted wife, and a loving mother. I’ve failed her more than anyone else in my life.”Greg’s smile froze on his face as he stared at the name printed at the top of the report. He read it again and again in disbelief.“How does it feel to discover that you’ve been raising another man’s son?” I watched him calmly. When I arranged the DNA test a few days earlier, I had also submitted a sample from Greg. I had not expected it to uncover another surprise. As it turned out, Billy was not Greg’s son either. “That’s impossible! You forged this!” Greg crumpled the report into a ball and hurled it at me.“Well, you can get another DNA

“You’ve been spoiled your entire life. It’s time you learned to be a little more independent.”After I left, Greg leaned close to Billy and whispered, “Your mom is still furious. Let’s just play along for now. When she is dead, everything she owns will be yours. Then, you can buy the entire bus company if you want.”Hearing that, Billy stopped whining.Although I had agreed to remove the cameras, I never said I would take all of them down. There were still several hidden ones left in the house.Lori had always seemed instinctively hostile toward me. Perhaps it came from the rivalry for attention and resources that often existed between siblings. With our parents constantly favoring her, taking things from me always came easily to her.I had understood the truth long ago. Anything that could be taken from me was merely a burden in disguise. The only things worth keeping were those that could not be stolen.I went to see Lori with several bodyguards in tow. “What do you think you

With the public attention still hot, I went live myself and played the footage of Lori and Greg coaching Billy on his suicide act in our home. When the viewers realized they had been used as pawns, their anger immediately boiled over.[Great. So, I’m one of those idiots online who attacks whoever they’re pointed at.][I’m never blindly jumping on another online scandal again. I was the real fool here.][That wretched woman worked with her brother-in-law to spread filthy lies about her sister. It’s absolutely vile!]I heard that Lori fainted after watching that footage at home. When she woke up, she threatened to kill herself. My parents were so furious that they wanted to come after me.When I came home, Billy rushed over, his face stricken with guilt.“Mom, I was wrong. Please forgive me.”Greg came to stand in front of me as well. “Honey, Billy and I were manipulated by Lori. She has always been jealous because you’re better than her in every way. That’s why she put our son u

I pulled out the security footage from my house. It clearly showed Lori and Greg coaching Billy on what to say and applying makeup to create his fake injuries. The ward fell silent for a moment before my mother began making excuses on her behalf. “Your sister was only playing a joke on you. Besides, Billy is just a child. He doesn’t know any better. You’re an adult. Why would you hold it against a child? Besides, he’s your son. If it came down to dying for him, that’s what any mother should do.”I scoffed. “Is that so? Is he really my son?”As soon as I said that, silence filled the ward again. My mother froze in place for several long seconds.“What... What do you mean by that? If he’s not yours, then whose is he? You must’ve lost your mind!”Judging by my mother’s reaction, I knew she had been aware of the truth all along. When I heard Billy call Lori “Mom” on the footage, I knew something was wrong. So, I had quietly arranged for DNA tests.Just as I had suspected, Billy was

“Billy!”I screamed and lunged forward to grab hold of his ankles. When the firefighters found the entrance blocked, they had immediately called Penny and told her to move her car. While she readily agreed, she took her sweet time walking there to drive it away. The fire truck had arrived and the rescue cushion was finally in place. “Mom, help me! Please! I don’t want to die!” Billy dangled upside down. His face turned bright red as blood rushed to his head.“Don’t worry, Billy! I’m pulling you back up!”Even as I said that, I made no real effort to pull him up. Instead, I pretended that my strength was giving out and loosened my grip slightly. When Greg saw his son hanging outside the window, he rushed forward to help. I had no intention of giving him the chance. I threw my weight forward and toppled out of the window myself.I grabbed Billy tightly by the arm. Together, we plunged onto the rescue cushion below. The impact left my head spinning, but I managed to use the last

I had James drop me off in the underground parking garage. I alighted and carried the bags upstairs to my apartment. When I opened the door, Lori was the first to turn toward me. “Stefani, what took you so long? Billy is about to jump!”I had no patience for her shrill voice, so I slapped her.“Shut your mouth! This is my family. You have no business butting in!”Lori’s eyes widened at my words.I kicked her aside. Then, I picked up the bags and dabbed at the corners of my eyes with a tissue soaked in onion juice. I began my performance.“Billy, please don’t jump! Come down! What have I ever done to deserve these lies? You said you wanted a gaming console, a phone, and a tablet, so I bought them all for you! These are the things you wanted. Look!”I held up the bags in front of him to make sure everyone watching the livestream could see them clearly. “Stay away from me! Get out! I don’t want those things! I don’t need your fake concern!” Billy’s resolve wavered as he stared at
