Chapter 5

Author: Egg Tart
In the study, Mariah was holding a cup of coffee with a look of disdain on her face.

"Leave? Where do you think a werewolf like you can go after leaving the protection of the pack?

"I know you have some resentment in your heart, but Liam is still your son. What will happen to him after you leave?"

My answer came without hesitation. "Liam has always wanted a different mother. Evelyn is the best choice."

Mariah rejected the idea almost instinctively. "No! How could Evelyn possibly be Liam's mother?

"She's so accomplished, and she has a career of her own. How could she give all that up over something like this?"

I snorted. "What makes her different from me? Why can she not do it while I can?"

Mariah's gaze settled on me as if she were examining me. "If you walk out of here today, don't ever come back. We'll pretend you never existed."

I found it almost laughable. "Don't worry. Even if I die out there, I won't ask you to bury me."

Slap!

Mariah's palm struck my face.

I couldn't dodge in time, and my head was knocked to the side.

"We took you in out of kindness and gave you a place in the pack, yet you still have the nerve to be rude to me like this. You really have no sense of gratitude."

Was the place in the pack they had given me really just a place at the very bottom?

During my first year at the pack's hunting competition, I came in first and took Evelyn's place.

Mariah locked me up and announced to the entire pack that I had stolen the prey.

All the honors and prizes were given to Evelyn, while I was permanently banned from entering the hunting grounds.

As her adopted daughter, I had taken countless attacks meant for Evelyn, both openly and in secret.

I recalled the worst incident. Back then, I was poisoned with wolfsbane.

My entire body convulsed, and I ran a high fever for more than ten days. I nearly died.

I almost lost the ability to transform forever.

In their eyes, all of that was nothing more than a way for me to compete with Evelyn for their attention.

I turned around and wiped the blood from the corner of my mouth.

"Then I hope Evelyn gets to experience everything I've endured."

With that, I picked up the bone whistle from the table and turned around to leave.

Holding the bone whistle in my hand, I felt like I was holding my mother's hand again.

The sunlight outside was warm, and a gentle breeze swept past. Everything felt like freedom.

I pushed open the front door. Before I could take a single step outside, I heard Liam's voice behind me. "Mom!"

  • My Son Regretted Wishing for Another Mother   Chapter 13

One day, I was playing with Denise when Nina suddenly brought me a letter from Mariah.[Dear Christiana, how have you been lately?]Most of the letter was nothing more than meaningless small talk. At the end, she said she missed me and hoped I could return to Garcia Pack for a visit if I had the chance.I had thought that after our falling-out, we would have nothing to do with each other anymore.I didn't reply, but I received another letter from her every day.In her letters, she mentioned that Norris had terminated the alliance and that Garcia Pack was in a precarious situation. She hoped that, for old times' sake, I could plead with him on their behalf.I grew so annoyed that I finally wrote back, telling them to promise they would never bother me again. After all, they had once said that once I gave birth to Liam, they wouldn't ask anything else of me.Unfortunately, they later went back on their word.I agreed simply because I wanted some peace and quiet, but there was n

I never expected these two to be so persistent.Liam brought me snacks every day. No matter how many times I refused, he never gave up.Norris placed a bouquet of wildflowers outside my window every single day without fail.Sometimes, there would even be game they had hunted waiting outside my door.I threw every single one of those things into the trash.Later, Norris came to apologize to me more than once.He said he hadn't known what I had gone through in Garcia Pack.He had always assumed that I received his mark simply to fulfill the pack's duty.As for Evelyn, he had thought I was merely being distrustful of him. "I didn't know your wolf spirit was sealed because of what they did. Come back with me. I'll find a way to heal you."But I refused. My wolf spirit had been sealed because of the trauma I suffered as a pup.Returning with them to the place filled with painful memories wasn't going to make me better. Now that I was living in the Kara Pack, no one mocked me for

Nina took Denise away, while I stayed behind with Liam as he continued receiving treatment. His injuries weren't serious, but they were certainly difficult for a pup to endure.Hearing him call me Mom, I couldn't bring myself to simply turn around and leave. This was the last time I would accompany him."Mom, I want some cookies too."I smiled bitterly. They were nothing more than snacks I'd casually made. The ingredients and taste were nowhere near as good as the ones he'd crushed beneath his feet before. When I didn't answer, Liam looked uneasy. He carefully tugged at the hem of my shirt and awkwardly tried to get my attention. "Mom, I don't want cookies anymore. Can we go home?"Dad and I can make some for you. Please don't be angry anymore."I pulled my shirt out of his grasp and took a deep breath. "Liam, I told you. I agreed to grant your wish. From now on, I'm not your mom anymore."This is the last time I'll see you. Let's treat it as our final goodbye."I turned arou

Liam stood among the werewolves behind me. A claw mark was clearly visible on his face.Further down, his shoulder was covered in a bite wound that hadn't been treated yet."The two pups got into a fight at the hunting grounds. Denise was the one who attacked first."Is this how Kara Pack treats its guests?"Liam took two steps toward me. His head was lowered as if waiting for me to embrace him.I didn't react. Instead, I crouched down and gently stroked Denise's head."What happened? Don't be afraid. Tell me everything."Denise pointed at Liam indignantly. "He snatched my stuff first!"I was tired, so I sat down and ate the cookies you made for me. I was nice enough to share half with him, but he took all of them!"As Denise spoke, she began crying pitifully again. My heart ached when I saw her like that, so I quickly pulled her into my arms and comforted her softly.Liam froze nearby. The eyes that had once refused to spare me even a glance were now filled with tears. He

Norris stood there while the sunlight outlined his figure with a golden glow.He looked much more haggard now, and he no longer carried the refined air he once had.His eyes were fixed firmly on me. It was as if he had expected this reunion all along. With the strength of the Keplin Pack, finding out where I was hadn't exactly been difficult for him, but what I hadn't expected was for him to actually appear in front of me.I didn't have time to catch up with him. I continued sprinting as fast as I could, but he overtook me and blocked my path."Didn't we agree you'd wait for me to come home? This isn't our home."I quickly changed direction, but he caught up with me again and again."Why did you leave without saying goodbye? Liam and I miss you so much. He hasn't been able to sleep properly each night–"I snarled at him. The fur along my body was standing on end."Get out of my way! Don't be an idiot and cause trouble!"I shoved him aside and sprinted toward the hunting groun

By the time I arrived at Kara Pack that evening, I saw an old friend I hadn't seen in years.Nina Peterson was waiting for me on the grassland with her daughter, Denise Peterson. What Mariah didn't know was that I had met them during the hunt she had falsely accused me of.We had stayed in touch ever since and exchanged letters regularly.Nina had said more than once that she wanted to have another exciting hunt with me.Now, I finally had the chance."I can't believe you actually came! Everything's ready. Come on, follow me." She enthusiastically linked her arm through mine, while Denise came over and grabbed my hand.Denise kept talking excitedly beside me. "Mom and I prepared a big welcome feast for you!"Warmth spread through my heart. So this was what it felt like to be loved. And so, I settled down in Kara Pack.Every day, Nina and I would run across the grasslands together, and whenever we had free time, we'd go hunting. She joked that my hunting skills hadn't changed
