Chapter 1

My son, Joey Parker, looked up at me, his face full of confusion.

"Daddy, Mr. Hayes gets to wear the million-dollar watch Mommy bought him, but you don't have anything like that. She even buys him silk suits, while you're always wearing those old, worn-out shirts.

"If being a homewrecker is so wrong, why does Mr. Hayes get so many nice things?"

Joey spoke with such innocent bewilderment that it was clear he genuinely couldn't understand what was wrong with it.

"All my classmates wanted to be homewreckers, too, after I told them about Mr. Hayes!"

I swallowed my anger, struggling to find the words to explain that things weren't as simple as he thought.

It wasn't that I couldn't divorce his mother, Amelia Brooks, or that I depended on her financially to survive. I'd stayed because I wanted our son to grow up in a complete family, with both parents by his side.

I'd never imagined that my sacrifice would lead him to see things so differently.

Noticing the look on my face, Joey assumed I was still feeling unwell from the fever I'd developed after getting soaked in the rain the other day. He quickly tried to reassure me.

"Daddy, remember when we got caught in the rain last time? Mommy made us get out of the car so Mr. Hayes could ride with her, and you gave me your umbrella because you were worried I'd catch a cold. You ended up getting soaked and coming down with a fever.

"Next time, I'll bring an extra umbrella so you won't get sick again!"

Before I could respond, the sound of the front door unlocking interrupted us.

Amelia was home.

She walked in holding an iced latte and gave me an apologetic look.

"I had to work late today, so I couldn't be here for your birthday. I picked this up on my way home to make it up to you."

I didn't respond.

The vivid red hickey on her neck made my nerves scream in protest.

I'd once believed I could keep turning a blind eye to things like that forever, but now I realized just how impossible it was to ignore that glaring red mark.

She'd barely taken a step toward me when Joey rushed over to stop her.

"Mommy, you got it wrong! Mr. Hayes is the one who likes lattes! Daddy's allergic to milk!"

Then he added, "Mr. Hayes likes expensive things. He likes black, and he likes lattes! You've talked about Mr. Hayes so much at home that I've memorized all his favorite things!"

Joey looked up at his mother, genuinely puzzled.

"Mommy, is Mr. Hayes really that important to you? Otherwise, how come you remember all his favorite things but can't even remember Daddy's?"

Amelia's smile froze.

Normally, I would have stepped in to change the subject, giving her a graceful way out and sparing our family the embarrassment—but not today.

She cleared her throat a couple of times before claiming she'd simply been too busy and had mixed up our drink preferences.

Then she set a few fancy takeout containers of leftovers on the table and headed into the bedroom.

"I brought home some food from a business dinner. Just heat it up when you're hungry, so you won't have to cook."

Joey stared at the expensive-looking containers with undisguised envy.

"Mommy must have taken Mr. Hayes out for another fancy dinner. He's so lucky! He gets to eat with Mommy every day."

He turned to me, his little face full of curiosity. "Daddy, when will Mommy ever have dinner with us?"

I didn't know how to answer. Instead, I ran a hand over his head in silence.

Over the years, there had been precious few days when Amelia hadn't worked late. Even on our son's birthday, she'd walked out without a second thought after receiving a phone call from her secretary, Sebastian Hayes.

It wasn't as though I'd never considered divorce. But every time I brought it up, someone would talk me out of it.

"Just put up with it for the sake of the child."

"How could a grown man possibly raise a child on his own? You know how important a mother is to a child."

"Kids need both parents. How can you expect a child to grow up happy without his mom?"

Those words had kept me trapped in the same miserable marriage for years, and Amelia knew it. That was precisely why she'd dared to push things so far, confident that I'd never leave.

In the past, I'd endured everything without seriously considering walking away—even when people mocked me for being a pretty boy living off a woman or sneered that I was nothing more than a sugar baby supported by my wealthy wife.

But today, I'd finally reached my limit.

I looked at my son and spoke gently.

"Whatever you want to eat, I will take you out for it. And if someone doesn't want to come home to us, we don't have to wait for them anymore."

Joey nodded as though he understood what I meant.

"Okay! As long as I have you, Daddy, that's all I need."

I smiled faintly and ushered him into his room before returning to the living room.

By then, Amelia had changed clothes and came out of the bedroom. The vivid red mark on her neck was impossible to miss.

I let out a cold laugh and looked away.

"Let's get a divorce."

I sat back down and looked at Amelia. "If Joey wants to see you, I won't stop him. But if he doesn't, then no one has the right to force him." Amelia stood beside the table, a final glimmer of stubborn hope lingering in her eyes. I knew she still couldn't accept it. She probably believed that if she begged enough and shed enough tears, I'd eventually soften—just as I always had before. But this time, I'd truly let go. I picked up the glass of water on the table and took a sip before speaking again. "What we had ended a long time ago, Amelia. There's no going back for us. You can't spend your whole life believing that saying 'I'm sorry' is enough to make everything right." I set the glass down and met her gaze. "Go live your life. Joey and I will live ours. Please, just let us go." After a brief pause, I continued, "I don't hate you anymore, Amelia. That's because you've become someone who no longer matters to me. I can't spend the rest of my life with someone who keep

Amelia had lost a considerable amount of weight. Her trench coat hung loosely on her frame, dark circles shadowed her eyes, and her lips were so dry that they had begun to peel. Her hair was hastily pulled back, with stray strands clinging to her forehead, and her makeup was smudged. She looked utterly exhausted.I looked away and turned to leave. She hurried after me, but I kept walking, ignoring her until her footsteps drew closer. A moment later, she grabbed my wrist. I yanked my hand free and spun around to face her. "Amelia, if you try to grab me again, I'm calling the police. We're in a foreign country. Keep this up, and they'll take you straight to the station." She froze, her hand still awkwardly suspended in the air. Her throat bobbed as she swallowed. When she finally spoke, her voice was low and hoarse. "William, I just want to say a few things. After that, I'll sign the divorce papers. Please?"I knew Amelia wasn't someone who gave up easily. I had no idea

Fall arrived early in Aurelia, bringing a faint chill that lingered in the air. Joey and I settled into a small apartment near his school, where life moved at a slower, quieter pace. Every morning, I dropped him off before heading to work. The job wasn't easy, but my coworkers were kind, and sometimes we'd grab coffee at the corner shop during our lunch break. I also started learning Aurelian again. Before long, I'd gone from stumbling over every other sentence to speaking with a reasonable degree of fluency.Joey adapted even faster than I'd expected. He made new friends, picked up a few simple Aurelian phrases, and often came home so excited he'd wave his arms around at the dinner table, animatedly imitating his teacher. Gradually, he stopped mentioning Sebastian. He no longer talked about homewreckers or asked when his mother was coming back. Then, one day, he came home from school and pulled a drawing out of his backpack. It depicted only two people. Looking up at me,

Sebastian was caught off guard by her reaction, but he quickly put on a wounded expression."It's me, Amelia. Why are you so worked up? Did something happen?" Before Amelia could answer, he slipped past her and made himself at home, strolling into the living room as if nothing were wrong. He glanced around casually."Where's William? He isn't home?" He set the insulated food container he'd brought on the dining table and lifted the lid, revealing several large shrimp and a few lemon slices. "I brought some seafood over. I was hoping William would make his signature garlic shrimp for me." After looking around a little longer and confirming that no one else was home, he turned back to her. "Amelia, did you and William have a fight?" Amelia remained silent. She was just about to answer when Sebastian cut her off with a reassuring smile. "It's okay. William's a softie. Just sweet-talk him a little, and he'll get over it."Didn't you tell me before that he was so attache

Amelia stood frozen, her phone still pressed to her ear as Sophie's voice continued on the other end. "Joey's dad came by yesterday to withdraw him from school, but he was in such a hurry that he forgot to take Joey's things with him. We haven't been able to reach him, so if you have time, could you come pick them up today?" Amelia tried to speak, but no words came out. It felt as though something had caught in her throat, leaving her unable to utter a sound. The moment she hung up, Amelia snatched her car keys and rushed out. She drove so recklessly that even she barely registered how fast she was going. The entire way to the school, she desperately tried to convince herself none of this was real. It couldn't be happening. I couldn't possibly have gone this far. "He has to be joking," she told herself. "That's it. He's playing a prank on me. He even got Isabelle and the teacher involved. They're all in on it, putting on this ridiculous act just to piss me off." She pulled

Amelia stood frozen, her phone still pressed to her ear. "That's impossible." The words slipped out before she could stop herself. "You two must have planned this together. William would never do something like this—""He wouldn't joke about something like this," Isabelle interrupted. "You know him better than I do. When has he ever treated marriage like a joke?" Silence fell between them before Isabelle spoke again."Amelia, we lived in the same dorm for four years. When you were pursuing William, I was the one who helped you deliver your love letters. "No matter how busy work got or how little we saw each other over the years, I've always considered you my best friend. So when William came to me about the divorce, my first instinct was to talk him out of it, too."Your child is already this old. How did things get so bad that it had to come to this? I even wondered if William was just being too sensitive."But then he showed me the records. How many times you'd come home ov
