Elena's pov

Before I could answer, before my mother could speak, Sophie took the dress from my hands. She held it against herself in front of the tall mirror near the window, turning so the light caught the beading. Then she glanced over her shoulder at Adrian with a playful little smile.

“Does it suit me better, do you think?”

Adrian’s gaze moved from Sophie to me. He noticed the way my expression had tightened. I watched him misread it completely, another attempt to start an argument, another overreaction.

Sophie noticed his attention and deliberately made the moment worse. She pretended to struggle with the dress, adjusting it against her body, then let out a small, embarrassed laugh.

“Oh, I’m sorry, Elena. I didn’t realize you wanted it so badly. I only thought we could share.”

She pressed the gown against her chest as though she were the one being inconvenienced. Victoria looked uncomfortable. “Sophie, give Elena the dress back, please.”

Sophie turned the moment into a performance of self-sacrifice so quickly it was almost elegant.

“It’s fine. Elena can have it. I wouldn’t want her to think I’m taking something else away from her.”

The words were carefully chosen. They made me sound jealous and unreasonable without Sophie ever having to accuse me directly.

Adrian stepped forward, already trying to smooth everything over.

“Elena, why don’t you pick another dress? There are plenty here. Sophie didn’t mean anything by it.”

I stared at him.

He was offering to replace the dress rather than asking Sophie why she had taken it in the first place. Once again he treated my hurt as the problem and Sophie’s behavior as something that should be excused.

For a moment the old urge rose,to tell him exactly what I thought, to force him to see the pattern. I swallowed it. Arguing would only give Sophie another opportunity to play the victim, another soft, wounded story for Adrian to believe.

I looked at the dress still held against Sophie’s body. Then at my mother.

“It’s fine, Mom. I’m hungry. I’ll choose something later.”

Victoria hesitated, sensing something wrong, but I was already turning away.

Adrian’s voice followed me, irritation creeping into the edges.

“Elena, we’re trying to make this easy for you.”

I did not stop walking.

“Then stop making decisions for me.”

The room fell silent behind me. The first time I had deliberately refused to participate in his attempts to smooth things over. I did not shout. I did not plead. I simply withdrew my attention and kept moving.

Sophie hurried after me. She caught up just enough to speak in a soft, distressed voice calculated to reach Adrian.

“Elena, please don’t be upset with me. I didn’t mean to cause another argument between you and Adrian. I didn't mean to.”

I stopped briefly but did not turn around.

Sophie continued, voice growing more fragile.

“I know things have been difficult since you found out you’re moving. I would never want you to think I’m trying to take your place in this family.”

I turned my head slightly. Just enough.

“You don’t need to take my place, Sophie. You’ve already made yourself comfortable in it.”

She went quiet for a fraction of a second. The remark landed too close to the truth. Then she composed herself with practiced speed.

Adrian stepped in before she could respond.

“That’s enough, Elena. Sophie is apologizing. You don’t have to make everything difficult.”

I looked at him one last time. Searched his face for even a trace of doubt, a flicker of uncertainty that maybe, just maybe,he was beginning to see the pattern.

There was none.

He would keep defending her as long as doing so remained easier than questioning the woman he had known his entire life.

“Don’t worry, Adrian. I won’t make anything difficult for you again.”

I left before he could answer.

The kitchen was empty when I entered. I finally allowed myself to breathe. Rather than waiting for the household staff, I took out a packet of plain noodles, filled a small pot with water, and set it on the stove. The ordinary act felt strangely comforting.

No expensive dinner table. No forced smiles. No Sophie pretending innocence.

No Adrian telling me how I should feel.

I carried the bowl to the kitchen table and began eating. For a few minutes the mansion was quiet around me. I thought about the temporary apartment, the jobs I could apply for, how much easier it might be to live somewhere nobody knew me as Adrian Williams’s stepsister.

Then the kitchen door opened.

Sophie walked in.

She went straight to the refrigerator, took out a bottle of water, and poured herself a glass. I kept eating, refusing to acknowledge her presence. She watched me for a moment before taking the chair opposite mine. She drank some water, set the glass down, and leaned back as if she had come for an ordinary conversation.

“You know, Elena,” she said lightly, “I’ve always wondered about something.”

I did not look up.

“Then keep wondering.”

Sophie smiled faintly, unfazed.

“Why does it bother you so much when Adrian chooses me?”

My fingers tightened around the fork. She noticed immediately. Of course she did.

“You get upset when we’re together. You hate it when he defends me. And today, when he held your hand, you looked at him as though you wanted him to say something else.”

I finally lifted my eyes.

Sophie leaned forward. The sweetness in her expression sharpened into something colder underneath.

“Tell me something, Elena.”

She paused, allowing the silence to stretch between us until it felt almost physical.

“Are you in love with Adrian?”

Elena’s POVI turned so fast the room tilted.Victoria stood in the doorway, one hand still resting on the frame, the soft glow from the hallway spilling around her shoulders. Her silk robe was tied neatly at the waist, her hair loosely gathered, and her face was free of the careful makeup she usually wore for the household. For a second, she simply looked at me.At the way I stood beside Adrian’s bed. At my hands, still half-raised as though I had been about to touch him again. At the short black top and grey shorts barely covered by the hoodie I had hurriedly pulled back into place. My heart slammed against my ribs.“Mum.”The word came out thinner than I intended. She stepped inside without speaking and closed the door behind her. Her eyes moved towards Adrian, who lay sprawled across the mattress, one arm hanging loosely over the side. His breathing was heavy and uneven, and the sharp scent of alcohol still lingered in the room.I quickly spoke before she could ask anything.“I fo

Elena's POV“I don't understand why you need to question everything I do.”“Then help me understand.” He stepped closer. “Why are you dressed like that? Why are you carrying a bag? And why are you sneaking through the back door instead of walking out through the front like a normal person?”“Because I don't want to explain every little thing I do to you.”His expression hardened.“Watch your tone.”I let out a short, disbelieving laugh. “There it is.”“What?”“That voice. That look. The one you use whenever you think I'm doing something you don't approve of.”He stared at me.“Is that what you think this is?”“Isn't it?”He stepped closer, and I instinctively shifted backwards.“Answer my question, Elena. Where are you going?”“I already told you. For snacks.”“And I'm telling you I don't believe you.”“Then that's your problem.”His jaw tightened. He reached out and caught the edge of my hoodie, tugging it down just enough for the short black top underneath to become visible. • My Stepbrother's Forbidden Love   Chapter Eighteen — Wait what!

Elena’s POVThe grey-blue dress hung in the wardrobe like a quiet promise. I had smoothed every fold, closed the door, and told myself that was enough for tonight. Tomorrow I would wear it and walk into the ceremony looking like someone who had been chosen, even if only for a handful of careful minutes by a stranger whose name I still did not know.Tonight was different.I sat on the edge of the bed with my phone in both hands, the soft instrumental playlist still playing low from the speaker. The screen glowed against the dim room. I hadn’t meant to open the app. My thumb had simply moved the way it always did when the house felt too quiet and my thoughts too loud.Sophie’s latest post was already at the top of my feed.Adrian and Sophie on the wide front steps of the mansion, late-afternoon light catching the gold of her hair and the sharp line of his jaw. His arm was around her waist. She was leaning into him the way she always did—soft, claimed, certain. The caption was short and

  • My Stepbrother's Forbidden Love   Chapter Seventeen — The parcel

Elena's POV My breath caught. I read the two words again. Then a third time. The stranger’s voice rose in my memory, low, accented, the endearment spoken like it belonged only between us. *Come with me, Mi flor.* The way the words had wrapped around me in the middle of the crowded store, warmer than they should have been. A small, involuntary smile touched my mouth before I could stop it. I opened the packaging fully, careful not to tear the paper. The grey-blue dress lay folded inside with almost reverent care. The same soft fabric. The same clean lines. The same colour of early evening sky just before the streetlights came on. Beneath it, nestled in tissue paper, was the slim black jewellery box. I lifted the lid with careful fingers. The delicate gold chain and the small flower pendant rested against dark velvet, exactly as they had when he first opened the box in front of the tall mirror. I lifted the dress carefully, letting the fabric unfold against my arms. It whisp

  • My Stepbrother's Forbidden Love   Chapter Sixteen — I'm done

Elena's PovI shook my head. She didn’t scold. She simply moved to the refrigerator, pulled out a covered plate she must have set aside earlier, and slid it into the microwave. While it heated she poured a tall glass of cold orange juice and set it on the island in front of me. “Sit,” she said gently. “I kept this aside. Thought you might come down late.” The microwave beeped. She placed the plate in front of me,simple pasta with a light tomato sauce, the kind she knew I could manage when my stomach felt tight, and then took the stool across from me, not eating, just present. The quiet company of someone who had watched me grow up in this house and never once asked me to be smaller. “Is everything all right?” she asked after a moment, voice low. I nodded, eyes on the food. “Just tired.” She didn’t press. That was one of the quiet mercies of her presence. She had seen enough of this house over the years to know when silence was kinder than questions. I ate slowly. The food

  • My Stepbrother's Forbidden Love   Chapter Fifteen — Tired

Elena’s POV The car finally slowed as the iron gates of the Williams mansion parted with their usual soft electronic hum. Gravel shifted under the tyres in a familiar, grinding rhythm that had always meant home, even when home felt like a place I was only borrowing. Adrian parked with the precision he applied to everything that belonged to him. The engine settled into silence. Shopping bags rustled in the boot as one of the house staff began lifting them out. I didn’t wait. The second the vehicle stopped I pushed the door open and stepped into the late-afternoon air. It carried the first cool edge of evening, the faint scent of the garden’s late roses and cut grass drifting across the wide front lawn. I walked straight toward the double front doors without looking back. Behind me I heard Sophie’s light voice saying something soft and satisfied, the quiet click of her heels on the gravel, Adrian’s deeper murmur answering her. None of it belonged to me. Victoria stood just insi
