The bank was on a narrow street near the Opéra. It didn't look like a bank. It looked like an old apartment building—grey stone, iron balconies, a heavy wooden door with a brass handle. If you didn't know it was there, you'd walk right past it.

Mathilde stood on the pavement, looking up at the windows. James was beside her, the wooden box in his hand. Caspian and Theo were behind them, scanning the street like they expected someone to jump out of the shadows.

The bank was on a narrow street near the Opéra. It didn't look like a bank. It looked like an old apartment building—grey stone, iron balconies, a heavy wooden door with a brass handle. If you didn't know it was there, you'd walk right past it.Mathilde stood on the pavement, looking up at the windows. James was beside her, the wooden box in his hand. Caspian and Theo were behind them, scanning the street like they expected someone to jump out of the shadows."It's a bank," Theo said. "Not a bank robbery.""Old habits," Caspian said. They pushed open the door. Inside was a narrow lobby with a marble floor and a single desk. Behind the desk sat a man in his fifties, bald, with glasses on a chain around his neck. He looked up when they came in."Bonjour.""Bonjour," James said. He stepped forward. Set the wooden box on the desk. "We're here to access a safety deposit box. It's in the name of Céleste Moreau."The man's expression didn't change. But his hand moved to the keyboard. "Do you

The lawyer arrived at nine the next morning. His name was Maître Delacroix, and he was a small man with sharp eyes and a briefcase that looked heavier than he was. He stepped out of his car, looked at the crooked sign, the patched roof, the half-fallen fence, and didn't say a word. Just walked to the door and knocked.Caspian let him in. "Thank you for coming all the way out here.""I don't come all the way out here for just anyone." Delacroix set his briefcase on the kitchen table. "I come because I've been waiting twenty years for someone to find those ledgers."He opened the briefcase. Pulled out a pair of reading glasses. Put them on. Looked at the six leather-bound books stacked on the table like they were made of gold."These," he said, "are the best thing I've seen in my entire career."They sat down. Mathilde poured coffee. Delacroix didn't drink it. He was already turning pages, his fingers moving fast but careful, like a man handling old bones."Richard was meticulous," he s

Caspian found the ledger on a Tuesday. He'd been cleaning out the basement—the murder basement, as Theo still called it—because the pipe had leaked again and he wanted to see what else was down there. Mathilde held the flashlight. Theo stood at the top of the stairs and complained about the smell. James was upstairs, reading."There's a shelf behind the workbench," Caspian said. "Move the light."She moved it. He pulled the shelf forward. It swung out from the wall, hinged at the bottom, like it had been designed to hide something. Behind it was a small alcove. Cool air. Stone walls. And a metal box, bigger than the one they'd found upstairs, rusted shut."Another box," Mathilde called up."What kind of box?" Theo called down."The kind that's been here a long time."Caspian worked the lid. It took both of them—him prying, her holding the flashlight steady. When it finally gave, the sound echoed in the small space.Inside were ledgers. Not one. Six. Leather-bound. Water-stained. The p

Mathilde woke up before the rooster. She lay on the couch for a minute, listening. The house was quiet. Gerald was snoring. The fire had burned down to ash. Through the window, the sky was still dark. She got up. Pulled on her shoes. Went outside. The air was cold and wet. Dew on the grass. The trees were grey shapes against a grey sky. She walked to the fence at the back and leaned on the post. The same post she'd leaned on weeks ago, when Caspian had found her in the moonlight. She wasn't waiting for anything. She was just standing there. Breathing. Listening.A bird started up somewhere. Then another. The sky went from black to dark blue to something lighter. She heard the back door open. Footsteps on the porch. She didn't turn."Couldn't sleep?" James."No."He came up beside her. He was weari

The roof took four days. Not because it was hard. Because none of them knew what they were doing. James read his book. Caspian made a list. Theo climbed the ladder first and immediately climbed back down."It's higher than it looks," he said."It's a roof," Caspian said. "It's supposed to be high.""You go up."Caspian went up.He stood on the roof for a full minute without moving. Mathilde watched from the yard. His silhouette against the grey sky. His hands at his sides. He didn't look like a man who was afraid of heights. He looked like a man who was calculating something."It's not that bad," he called down."You're lying," Theo called back."I'm not lying. It's just—" He paused. "Higher than it looks."They worked in shifts. One on the roof, one on the ladder, one o

The morning started with a broken pipe.Mathilde woke to the sound of water hitting the floor. Not a drip. A stream. She sat up on the couch and her foot landed in an inch of cold water. Gerald was standing on the armchair, looking at her like she'd done it on purpose."Caspian."No answer."Caspian."Footsteps upstairs. Then on the stairs. He appeared in the doorway, saw the water, and stopped."Where's the shut-off valve?""I don't know.""Where's James?""Asleep."He looked at the ceiling. Then at the floor. Then at Gerald on the armchair."Find Theo," he said. "I'll figure out the valve."She found Theo in the kitchen, standing at the stove, staring at the pot of soup like it had personally offended him."We ha
