By the time we returned to the house after the wedding, I still hadn't processed what had happened. I barely said a word during the drive, and the moment I got upstairs I disappeared into my new room and shut the door behind me. I sat on the edge of my bed with my phone pressed against my ear, staring at the wall as Mia's shocked voice came through the speaker. "What?! Are you for real? Chase is your stepbrother? That's unbelievable!" "I really can't believe this," I whispered, my voice cracking. "How on earth is Chase my stepbrother? How is the man my mom married Chase's dad?" The more I said it, the more impossible it sounded, and a sob escaped me before I could stop it. "How am I supposed to live in the same house as my crush, Mia? How am I supposed to survive this?" I tried to laugh through the tears, but nothing about this was funny anymore. I had spent years wishing I could get closer to Chase, and now that fate had granted my wish, it had done it in the most horrifying way possible. "This is bad," I groaned, dropping backward onto the bed. "I'm actually going to lose my mind." Mia was quiet for a moment, then I heard the smile creep into her voice. "Or maybe this is your chance. You're living under the same roof now. Isn't that perfect for you?" I stared at the ceiling, hating how fast the thought made my heart flutter despite everything. "Don't," I muttered, but she laughed, and that was the annoying part. She had a point. Living with Chase meant more time with him, more chances to finally tell him how I felt. Except now there was a giant problem attached to that dream, and I didn't even know how to explain it. My mother's voice floated up the stairs. "Avery! Come downstairs and eat with your new family!" I sat upright, eyes widening in horror. "New family," I repeated under my breath, dragging both hands through my hair until it was a mess. Mia burst out laughing. "Hold on, you've got this. I need to go now, I'm going on a date." "No! Don't leave me!" I cried. "Mia!" The call ended. I stared at my phone. "Traitor," I muttered, just as a knock sounded against my door. Another knock followed, louder, and I dragged myself off the bed to answer it, only to find Brandon my little brother standing there with a smug grin plastered across his face. "You've been crying?" he asked, looking me up and down. "Why? Your crush is here now, idiot. You should be happy." My eyes narrowed. "What did you just call me?" His grin widened, and that was all the warning I needed. "You heard me." "Brandon!" I lunged toward him, and he took off down the hallway, laughing like the little menace he was. "Come back here! I'm going to kill you!" "You can't catch me!" he yelled over his shoulder, which only made me run faster. He disappeared into one of the rooms, and I followed without thinking, ready to grab him and wipe that grin off his face. The moment I stepped inside, I froze. Brandon was nowhere in sight. Instead, Zane stood there, steam curling through the air around him, his hair still damp. Completely naked. My gaze snagged on his chest before I could stop it, and my breath caught. The tattoo. Serpent, dagger, tiny crown, the exact same design I'd seen on the mysterious man from that night. My stomach dropped. No. It couldn't be. He had the same tattoo. And Chase had it too. "I'm sorry. Wrong room." I turned to leave, but Zane caught me before I'd taken a single step. "Sure you're in the wrong room?” His voice carried that same irritating amusement as his eyes narrowed while he studied my face, " Or did you walk in here on purpose?" I had no answer. I backed away until my shoulders hit the wall, and he followed at an unhurried pace, as though he already knew I had nowhere left to go. One hand landed flat against the wall beside my head, caging me in. The heat radiating from his bare skin made me painfully aware of exactly how close he was. My eyes betrayed me for a second, dropping lower before I quickly forced them back to his face. My cheeks burned, and I bit my lower lip, furious at myself for looking. "Amazed by the size?" His mouth curved into a slow, knowing smirk. My face burned. "I wasn't..." "Careful, step-sister." He leaned in. "Keep looking at me like that, and I might start thinking you like what you see." I stared at him, frozen, my mind racing far faster than I could process, until one terrifying thought finally broke through everything else. Which one of them did I spend that night with?AveryPiper gasped the moment she saw Chase, immediately pulling away from the man, clutching the bedsheet tightly around herself as she scrambled to cover up.Her eyes were wide with panic. "Chase, it's not what you think," she rushed out, her voice shaking.I almost laughed at the words because what else could she possibly say when we had literally caught her red handed?"It's not what he thinks?" I shot back, my anger spilling over before I could stop it. "We just caught you doing exactly what you've been doing. You are in a relationship and hooking up with someone else." "I wasn't talking to you, so just keep quiet," she snapped."Just stop, both of you!" Chase suddenly shouted, rubbing a hand over his face and shook his head. "I just need space right now.""Babes…" Piper called, but he turned and walked away."You spied on me, right?" Piper demanded, glaring at me angrily."You were the one who cheated," I shot back. She gave a bitter laugh and looked me up and down. "If you re
AveryAfter the kiss, I couldn’t even look Zane in the eyes. My whole body felt like it had forgotten how to move normally, and the heat rushing into my face was so intense I was sure everyone could see it. I dropped my gaze, suddenly painfully aware of the crowd, the music, the phones still in people’s hands, and the fact that I had just kissed my stepbrother in front of everyone. My lips still tingled, my heart was pounding, and my mind kept replaying the last few seconds over and over again. Then someone laughed from the crowd. “That was so hot!” a girl said, and I immediately felt even more embarrassed. I lowered my head, wishing the floor would open up and swallow me whole, but then Piper’s voice cut through the noise, sharp enough to make my stomach twist. “Ooh, she’s moved to Zane now?” The words hit me harder than they should have, and suddenly all the heat in my face felt like anger as much as embarrassment. I couldn’t stand there another second.“What was that?” Abby ask
Avery “Now tell me,” she said, turning toward me with a curious smile. “Did you tell him the invitation was from me?” I shook my head. “You didn’t?” Abby’s eyebrows lifted, she dragged a hand through her hair with a frustrated sigh. “Oh God, why? It would’ve been easier now.” She studied my face for a moment before asking, “Who’s he to you again?” I hesitated for half a second, then answered, “He’s my stepbrother.” Abby’s expression changed instantly. She laughed, then let out a relieved sigh. “Thank God. I was starting to think maybe you liked him or something. It’s really nice that he’s your stepbrother because that makes it easier for me. I really want us to be friends.” She smiled at me so openly that I couldn’t help smiling back. “What?” I asked, still trying to understand where that had come from. “I mean it. I want to be your friend.” I gave a small laugh and nodded. “Sure.” Abby suddenly threw her arms around me in a tight hug. “Thanks!” “So you’l
AveryI swallowed hard as Zane came closer, the familiar scent of his cologne reaching me."Welcome home, brother," Chase said cheerfully, stepping forward to give him a quick high five, while I stood frozen, trying desperately to look anywhere except at Zane."Hey," Zane said, his eyes briefly finding mine."Hey," I managed, forcing my face into something I hoped looked normal instead of the panic I could feel taking over. There was no way. He was staying here? In this house? With me?"You guys need to be on your best behavior," Mom said, drawing my attention away from him as she looked between me and Brandon. "We practically begged Zane to stay here while we're gone, okay?""There's food in the house and everything you need, and we'll keep sending money if you need anything. If there's any issue, call us." Mom glanced at the time and hurried toward the stairs with my stepdad. "We need to go now, or we'll miss our flight."They disappeared to grab their bags, then came back down with
AveryAs soon as I got into my room, I closed the door behind me and fell onto my bed, still holding the hockey ticket in my hand. A ridiculous smile spread across my face as I stared at it. I couldn't stop myself from lifting it to my lips and kissing it once before laughing at my own behavior."I can't believe this," I whispered, pressing the ticket against my chest.I rolled onto my stomach, looked at the shopping bags scattered across my bed, then reached for my phone. There was no way I was keeping this from Mia.She picked up after a few rings. "Well?" she asked immediately. "You sound happy.""I am," I said, failing to hide my excitement. "You won't believe what happened."I told her everything. She listened until I finished, then let out a loud laugh. "Wow, that's such progress. So Zane really helped you with your whole makeover and everything?""Yes, he did." I glanced at the clothes beside me. "He's the reason Chase noticed me. I could feel something today, Mia. I really thi
Avery"This is embarrassing," I said, pulling away slightly and quickly wiping the tears from my eyes with the back of my hand. "I didn't... I'm sorry for crying. I just..."The words tangled in my throat. My cheeks burned, and I kept my eyes lowered."It's fine," Zane said quietly. "It's okay to let things out."I nodded, still avoiding his eyes. Then I noticed the blood. My eyes widened. "Oh my God, Zane, you're bleeding badly." I reached for him immediately. "We need to take you to the hospital.""I'm fine.""No, you're not." I caught his wrist and pulled his hand closer. "Look at this. You're bleeding.""I said I'm fine.""And I said you're not." I frowned at him. "If you don't want to go to the hospital, fine, but at least let me take care of it. And stop fighting people with your bare hands."Before he could argue, I opened my bag and pulled out the little first-aid box I carried around. Zane looked at it, then at me, amused."What?" I asked."Nothing."A faint smile tugged at t
