SALVATORE

The moment we pulled into the driveway, I saw Miguel standing out front in nothing but his black robe.

His arms were folded and his eyes cut through the dark like knives. Worry was written all over him, even though he tried to hold it in. His curls were a little messy like he had been pacing.

I’m sure that he had been pacing, and I didn’t like that I was the cause of it. I didn’t even let the car fully stop before I opened the door and stepped out.

“Miguel,” I called.

He was already walking toward me, very fast. Pietro and Luca said nothing. They slipped past us toward the side entrance like shadows. I met Miguel halfway and pulled him into my arms before he could speak. He buried his face in my neck.

“You smell like smoke and steel,” he whispered against my collarbone. His voice was rough with sleep and frustration.

“We went out for a quick ride,” I murmured, pressing my lips to his temple. “We handled a few things.”

He looked up at me, smiling. His eyes shone even in the

SALVATOREThe night tasted like iron and blood. Mostly blood.I moved through the hallway like a shadow, careful not to make a sound. Everyone was asleep. The kids were tucked in with Miguel curled beside them. And this was the perfect time to move.I’d stood by the door for a moment longer than I meant to, watching Miguel in the low light. My fingers itched to go back, but tonight wasn’t about softness. It was about blood.I hated to even think about it, but I missed this thrill.I went straight to Mama’s room. She was sitting at the window swirling a full glass of wine. “I miss having you around.”I smiled at her. “I guess I’m here to correct things now.”“I know you will bring back victory as usual,” she said, looking at me for the first time since I stepped into the room. “Keep your brother and cousin close.”“Yes, Mama. I will deliver the good news in the morning.”*^*^*^*^I found Pietro and Luca waiting outside like statues carved from the dark, dressed in black and already arm

SALVATOREThe door clicked open and Miguel stepped in with Paul trailing behind him. I’d almost thought that they even left the property. Their laughter drifted in from outside like warm sunlight after rain.“Did you two have a nice walk?” I did not even lift my eyes from the book on my lap. I hadn’t read a single page. I’d been staring at the same sentence for twenty minutes because of the kids. They were so distracting.Miguel grinned. “Yeah. We needed the air, and Paul needed to stretch his long legs.”Paul chuckled softly and gave me a small wave as they moved toward the sitting area. He looked more relaxed now after the walk. I didn’t know what was discussed, but I was sure that Miguel had made him feel more comfortable. Before I could say more, the front door creaked again. We all turned toward it.Mama Sofia walked in slowly, dressed in a beige dress that swept around her ankles and a silk scarf perfectly wrapped around her head. Her sunglasses shaded her expression, but I didn

MIGUELWhen Paul called that morning, I was already half-tuned out, watching Isabella crawl over Salvatore’s chest while he made dramatic groaning noises like she was crushing him. The call surprised me, not because he had never called, but because Paul hardly visited people. I like to think that he hated the inconvenience. Even when I was at my stepmother’s, he always avoided the house and only came when he had no option. So when I got the call and he said, “I’m coming over,” I blinked a few times and made sure I wasn’t hallucinating. If anything I didn’t even expect that he would come here. I always thought that he was waiting for me and Salvatore to move to our place before he came visiting. Well, that was until this call.He didn’t ask. He told me. He said he was off today and had the day to himself and figured, “Why the hell not?”I was still trying to recover from the party and the kids, so I didn’t bother getting out of bed for class. I was kind of glad that I stayed home ins

MIGUELThe car pulled out of the driveway with a gentle purr, leaving a lot of the rays stretching across the hood. Salvatore was behind the wheel with one hand lazily resting on the steering wheel, while the other played with my thigh. I didn’t even realise that his hand was there. It had become his habit. I guess it brought him comfort. Or maybe even gave him a sense of ownership and territory. Knowing Salvatore as well as I did, the latter sounded like the perfect answer. In the backseat, Leo was strapped in next to Isabella, and he hadn’t stopped talking since we left.“Papa, what’s that red thing with the long top?”“That’s a fire hydrant, Leo.”“Oh. What does it do?”“It helps put out fires.”“Oh. What’s that round thing on the stick?”“A traffic sign.”“What’s that sign for?”“To tell drivers to stop.”“Oh. And what’s that—?”“Leo!” I turned slightly to glance at him, laughing. “Do you ever get tired?”He shook his head with a grin, bouncing as the car hit a small bump. “Nope!

MIGUEL“Oh, lord, my head.” I rolled to my side and grunted softly. I must have hit my head sometime during the night because there was no way that party from yesterday was the cause of this throbbing in my head. The sheets were warm beside me, but Salvatore was gone.I sat up and looked around, realizing that we were not in our room. We had slept in the guest room. Leo and Isabella were in the main room. Shit. I scrambled out of bed, barely taking time to wipe the sleep from my eyes as I threw on a shirt and hurried into the hall. But as I turned the corner, soft squeals floated up from downstairs. I slowed at the sound and padded toward the railing, peeking over.Salvatore was in the middle of the living room, spinning Isabella in the air. Her high-pitched giggles echoed as she flailed her little limbs, wild with joy. Leo stood nearby, clapping and bouncing on his toes like his legs were made of springs. Salvatore tossed Isabella up again, caught her, kissed her cheeks dramaticall
