Chapter 2

Penulis: Goodtale
After that dinner, I didn't sit around doing nothing.

I asked a friend with ties to the city hall and building departments to run a full background check on Shane's company.

The more I found out, the more sick to my stomach I felt.

Shane's company, Stratum Construction Corp, still had a valid business license, but its accounts had long been drained.

Two years earlier, he'd taken on a commercial complex renovation project that had eventually stalled. Most of the construction payments had been siphoned away.

Some of the money had gone toward plugging holes in his own finances. No one knew where the rest had gone.

Now the construction site sat abandoned, with the steel and concrete already rusting away. The workers had all left.

Worse still, the company owed its workers 230 grand in unpaid wages. Not a single penny had been paid.

It also owed suppliers more than 200 grand for materials. The IOUs and loan agreements from various creditors were stacked nearly a foot high.

I went through them one by one, and I felt a chill down my spine.

This was the major project Shane had been talking about. It was nothing but an insolvent disaster.

As I was looking through the information, Shane called. He'd been calling me over ten times a day.

"Bud, what are you up to? Listen, I haven't told anyone about that project. I was saving it for you.

"We grew up together. We've been best friends since we were kids. If I don't help you, who will?

"You're working on your own now. Isn't it exhausting? Come work with me. I guarantee you'll make money."

I responded with the occasional hums and grunts while my hands kept moving.

I saved Shane's list of debts, where the construction payments had gone, and the company's liabilities onto my phone one by one.

I even looked into the accountant who had helped Shane falsify the books. The ledgers were full of alterations and suspicious corrections.

I then had someone investigate the so-called investor.

What I found only confirmed my suspicions.

The important man Shane had mentioned was named Samuel Warthorn. He wasn't a legitimate investor at all.

He was a loan shark who specialized in private lending. His reputation was terrible.

Shane had probably borrowed money from Samuel and was now being forced to drag me in to clean up his mess.

I already knew what was going on, but I didn't let on.

Whenever Shane called again, I simply smiled and played along. "All right, I'll think about it. Don't worry. How could I not care about my friend's business?"

Shane laughed cheerfully on the other end. "That's more like it! Bud, I'm telling you, once this opportunity is gone, it's gone. You have to come this Friday. I've already drawn up the contract."

After hanging up, I called my cousin, Daniel Cameron. "Help me look into someone named Samuel Warthorn. He does private lending. See if he has any cases on record."

Twelve hours later, Daniel texted me.

[Isaac, this guy is bad news. He's got several cases on his record involving debt collection, and he has a bunch of thugs working for him.]

I stared at the message. The last bit of doubt in my mind disappeared.

This man wasn't an investor. This was a trap that had already been set.

I’d been in the construction business for years and met all kinds of people, but I’d never met anyone like Shane. He was someone who could throw his own friend under the bus and act like he was doing him a favor.

I had no intention of running away from this. It wasn't my style.

If Shane wanted to set a trap for me, I was going to make sure it blew up in his face.

I organized all the evidence on my phone.

I photographed the contract template, archived the debt list, and backed up the recordings of my conversations with Shane.

I even printed out everything I'd found about the fake investor, Samuel.

I then called a lawyer I knew well.

"Mr. Jackson, I need you to keep an eye on something. I might need your help next Friday."

Liam Jackson answered and asked what was going on.

I thought for a moment before responding. "Someone's trying to make me take the fall for something. I don't intend to let that happen."

There was a brief silence on the other end. "All right. Send me the materials. I'll take a look."

I hung up and placed my phone face down on the table.

Shane had already built the stage for this show, so I'd step onto it and play along until the very end.

After everything that happened, my reputation soared throughout the industry.People started saying I knew how to protect myself while still standing by my friends, and that I'd helped the workers recover their hard-earned wages while keeping my accounts completely clean. The stories spread further and further.More and more people came looking to work with me. I took on quite a few new contracts. My company stabilized and gradually grew larger. The new employees even said privately that working for me gave them peace of mind. One longtime client signed a major contract with me for the first time. Right before signing, he even asked, "Mr. Cameron, there's no catch in this contract, is there?"I flipped open the contract and pointed out each clause. "It's all here. Take your time and read it. If you find anything questionable, I'll take responsibility for it."After reading it, he smiled and said, "I feel safe doing business with you."I smiled too.If I'd heard those words bef

A month later, the case finally came to a close. The investigation into Shane was complete. The contract fraud, his plan to run, the fake investor, and all the debts were all confirmed one by one.In the end, Shane had to shoulder the debts from the unfinished project himself. The unpaid wages, the money owed to suppliers, and the high-interest loans he owed Samuel were all his responsibility. He couldn't avoid any of them. The court seized his cars and properties. Anything that could be sold to repay the debts was taken.Even with whatever remained, his credit was ruined beyond repair.Worse still, since he was suspected of contract fraud, he also faced criminal liability.Samuel didn't get off easy either. His high-interest lending operation was exposed in its entirety.Illegal business operations, violent debt collection, and a whole string of other offenses came to light during the investigation. The 300 grand he'd lent out had been saddled with illegal interest rates. Things were resolved much faster than I'd expected. The workers who had been denied their wages finally got their money back with the evidence I'd put together. One of the foremen even brought two cartons of cigarettes to thank me."Mr. Cameron, we really owe you one. If you hadn't seen through Shane and kept all that evidence, we would've worked for an entire year for nothing."I waved it off and didn't accept the cigarettes."You earned that money. You deserve to be paid for the work you did."That money never should've been siphoned away by Shane in the first place."The foreman left with tears in his eyes. He kept thanking me over and over. I felt a little lighter too.The trouble wasn't over yet.A few days later, a materials supplier came to see me. He'd done business with Shane before and still had some of the materials from the unfinished project sitting in his warehouse. He cautiously asked, "Mr. Cameron, what if you took over part of that unfinished project?"You'r

I called the police. They arrived soon enough.Shane was brought to the station for questioning on suspicion of contract fraud. Samuel wasn't let off the hook either. His private lending activities were investigated as well.Liam stayed by my side and helped me through all the necessary procedures."Mr. Cameron, don't worry. You never signed the contract, so that unfinished company has nothing to do with you."Legally speaking, you're completely in the clear."I nodded. After all these years in the construction business, there was one thing I understood better than most. One should never sign documents carelessly.Once your signature was on the page, the debt was yours. The police retrieved the recordings, screenshots, transaction records, and the unsigned contract from me.Everything became evidence.Even the accountant who had helped Shane falsify the books was taken in for questioning and couldn't escape responsibility. The actual developer of the commercial complex als

Shane's voice came clearly from my phone."Bud, I'll be honest with you. I really can't keep this company going anymore."Once you sign, you'll become the legal representative. The debt will all be yours, and it won't have anything to do with me anymore."I'll take the money and lie low somewhere for a while. Once things settle down, I'll come back and make it up to you."The moment the recording ended, the office filled with loud gasps. The foremen's eyes turned bloodshot."Shane, you monster! Did you plan to dump your own debt on Mr. Cameron and run?""We worked our butts off for a year! Where are our wages?"The creditors outside also stepped forward."Shane, pay us back! You're not leaving until you explain everything today!"Shane was trapped in the middle of the crowd. His face had gone completely pale. His lips trembled as his eyes darted around. He still tried to argue. "I-I was drunk. I didn't know what I was saying."I smiled. "Drunk? Did you buy that train ticket

The next afternoon, I showed up at Shane's office.I wasn't alone.Liam was with me, along with two foremen whose wages Shane had failed to pay.A crowd had already gathered outside the office. There were workers waiting for their unpaid wages, suppliers demanding payment, and a few people in the same industry who had heard what was happening and come to watch.Shane was inside discussing how to split the money with Samuel. When he looked up and saw me, he froze for a moment before plastering a smile across his face."Bro, you're here! I've got the contract all ready. All that's missing is your signature."As he spoke, he pushed the contract toward me.I didn't take it.I looked around the office and smiled. I wasn't being loud, but everyone present could hear me clearly. "Shane, before I sign anything, there's something I want to make clear to everyone."Shane's expression changed. He had a bad feeling about where this was going. "Bro, what are you talking about?"I pulled
