Chapter 3

Penulis: Goodtale
Friday night came. It was the same restaurant and the same private room.

The only difference was that Shane had brought someone with him this time.

He was a stocky man in his fifties with a thick gold chain around his neck and a face mapped with smile lines.

Shane quickly introduced him. "Bro, this is Mr. Warthorn. He's a major investor. He's interested in our project."

Samuel narrowed his eyes as he looked me up and down before nodding. "Mr. Cameron, I've heard a lot about you. Shane has had nothing but good things to say. You're quite the man."

I smiled and shook his hand without being overly deferential.

"You're too kind, Mr. Warthorn."

After a few rounds of drinks and some small talk, Shane suddenly changed the subject. He pulled out a stack of papers from his bag and pushed them toward me. "Bro, there's only one reason I asked you here tonight.

"Let's work on this project together. I'll lead the project, you'll provide the manpower, and we'll split the equity fifty-fifty.

"I've already drawn up the contract. Sign it today and we can start work tomorrow."

Samuel chimed in. "Mr. Cameron, this project is a gold mine. Plenty of people want a piece of it, but they don't have the connections.

"You're Shane's friend, so I'm giving you this opportunity."

The two of them worked together, pressuring me from every angle to sign on the spot.

I didn't rush to respond. I picked up my glass, took a slow sip, and said, "I'll look at the contract first."

Shane looked a little annoyed before he immediately forced another smile. "What is there to look at? We're friends. Do you really think I'd screw you over?

"Come on, sign it. Opportunities like this don't come again."

I ignored him. I picked up the stack of contracts and slowly flipped through them from beginning to end.

The first two pages were beautifully written. There were terms like joint venture, a win-win situation, and friends united as one. Everything seemed reassuring.

Once I reached the third page, my gaze turned cold.

The third page stated everything in plain black and white.

[Party B, Isaac Cameron, agrees to acquire all equity in Party A, Shane Lawson's company, and assume full liability for all of the company's debts.]

[This includes, but is not limited to, outstanding construction payments, unpaid workers' wages, material costs, external loans, and interest.]

[Upon completion of the equity transfer, Party B, Isaac Cameron, will become the company's legal representative.]

I stared at those lines as the blood slowly rushed to my head.

This wasn't a partnership at all.

They were trying to make me the legal representative and dump all the debt on me.

I kept my expression neutral. I gently closed the contract, looked up, and smiled. "This contract is pretty thorough. I'll take it home and study it carefully. I'll give you an answer tomorrow."

Shane panicked. "What is there to study? It's a great opportunity. We have to decide tonight!"

Samuel also applied pressure from the side. His expression turned dark. "Mr. Cameron, the biggest taboo in business is hesitation.

"Everyone is fighting for a piece of this project. If you don't sign, I'll have to give it to someone else."

I smiled and gently placed the contract back on the table. "Mr. Warthorn, that's a bit much.

"When it comes to something involving money, I have to read everything carefully before signing. That's how I show respect for you."

I spoke slowly, but my tone was steady. Shane and Samuel exchanged a glance. In the end, neither of them dared to push me any harder.

Before leaving, I quietly took photos of every page of the contract with my phone.

When I got home, I spent the entire night digging deeper into Shane's background. Everything lined up.

The debt assumption and change of legal representative on the third page were specifically designed to dump the unfinished project's debts onto me, and Samuel wasn't an investor at all. He was Shane's creditor.

He was a loan shark.

Shane owed Samuel over 300 grand and had been driven into a corner. That was why he'd come up with this scheme.

He planned to dump the company on me, collect whatever money he could, and run.

I discovered that Shane had already bought a ticket to leave town.

I stared at the screenshot of the ticket for a long time. Whatever was holding me back snapped right then and there.

Early the next morning, I organized all the evidence and called Shane.

"Shane, let's meet tomorrow afternoon at the same place. I'll sign the contract."

There was a brief silence on the other end. Shane then burst into laughter. "Bud, I knew you'd come around eventually! Don't worry. Stick with me and you'll be living the good life!"

I hung up. My gaze was ice-cold.

'Sign the contract?' I thought.

I was going there to slam that contract right back in Shane's face.

After everything that happened, my reputation soared throughout the industry.People started saying I knew how to protect myself while still standing by my friends, and that I'd helped the workers recover their hard-earned wages while keeping my accounts completely clean. The stories spread further and further.More and more people came looking to work with me. I took on quite a few new contracts. My company stabilized and gradually grew larger. The new employees even said privately that working for me gave them peace of mind. One longtime client signed a major contract with me for the first time. Right before signing, he even asked, "Mr. Cameron, there's no catch in this contract, is there?"I flipped open the contract and pointed out each clause. "It's all here. Take your time and read it. If you find anything questionable, I'll take responsibility for it."After reading it, he smiled and said, "I feel safe doing business with you."I smiled too.If I'd heard those words bef

A month later, the case finally came to a close. The investigation into Shane was complete. The contract fraud, his plan to run, the fake investor, and all the debts were all confirmed one by one.In the end, Shane had to shoulder the debts from the unfinished project himself. The unpaid wages, the money owed to suppliers, and the high-interest loans he owed Samuel were all his responsibility. He couldn't avoid any of them. The court seized his cars and properties. Anything that could be sold to repay the debts was taken.Even with whatever remained, his credit was ruined beyond repair.Worse still, since he was suspected of contract fraud, he also faced criminal liability.Samuel didn't get off easy either. His high-interest lending operation was exposed in its entirety.Illegal business operations, violent debt collection, and a whole string of other offenses came to light during the investigation. The 300 grand he'd lent out had been saddled with illegal interest rates. Things were resolved much faster than I'd expected. The workers who had been denied their wages finally got their money back with the evidence I'd put together. One of the foremen even brought two cartons of cigarettes to thank me."Mr. Cameron, we really owe you one. If you hadn't seen through Shane and kept all that evidence, we would've worked for an entire year for nothing."I waved it off and didn't accept the cigarettes."You earned that money. You deserve to be paid for the work you did."That money never should've been siphoned away by Shane in the first place."The foreman left with tears in his eyes. He kept thanking me over and over. I felt a little lighter too.The trouble wasn't over yet.A few days later, a materials supplier came to see me. He'd done business with Shane before and still had some of the materials from the unfinished project sitting in his warehouse. He cautiously asked, "Mr. Cameron, what if you took over part of that unfinished project?"You'r

I called the police. They arrived soon enough.Shane was brought to the station for questioning on suspicion of contract fraud. Samuel wasn't let off the hook either. His private lending activities were investigated as well.Liam stayed by my side and helped me through all the necessary procedures."Mr. Cameron, don't worry. You never signed the contract, so that unfinished company has nothing to do with you."Legally speaking, you're completely in the clear."I nodded. After all these years in the construction business, there was one thing I understood better than most. One should never sign documents carelessly.Once your signature was on the page, the debt was yours. The police retrieved the recordings, screenshots, transaction records, and the unsigned contract from me.Everything became evidence.Even the accountant who had helped Shane falsify the books was taken in for questioning and couldn't escape responsibility. The actual developer of the commercial complex als

Shane's voice came clearly from my phone."Bud, I'll be honest with you. I really can't keep this company going anymore."Once you sign, you'll become the legal representative. The debt will all be yours, and it won't have anything to do with me anymore."I'll take the money and lie low somewhere for a while. Once things settle down, I'll come back and make it up to you."The moment the recording ended, the office filled with loud gasps. The foremen's eyes turned bloodshot."Shane, you monster! Did you plan to dump your own debt on Mr. Cameron and run?""We worked our butts off for a year! Where are our wages?"The creditors outside also stepped forward."Shane, pay us back! You're not leaving until you explain everything today!"Shane was trapped in the middle of the crowd. His face had gone completely pale. His lips trembled as his eyes darted around. He still tried to argue. "I-I was drunk. I didn't know what I was saying."I smiled. "Drunk? Did you buy that train ticket

The next afternoon, I showed up at Shane's office.I wasn't alone.Liam was with me, along with two foremen whose wages Shane had failed to pay.A crowd had already gathered outside the office. There were workers waiting for their unpaid wages, suppliers demanding payment, and a few people in the same industry who had heard what was happening and come to watch.Shane was inside discussing how to split the money with Samuel. When he looked up and saw me, he froze for a moment before plastering a smile across his face."Bro, you're here! I've got the contract all ready. All that's missing is your signature."As he spoke, he pushed the contract toward me.I didn't take it.I looked around the office and smiled. I wasn't being loud, but everyone present could hear me clearly. "Shane, before I sign anything, there's something I want to make clear to everyone."Shane's expression changed. He had a bad feeling about where this was going. "Bro, what are you talking about?"I pulled
